Fishing the BREEZY POINT JETTY in Queens, New York - NYC Fluke / SUMMER FLOUNDER on the Fly. Fluke love any structure they can slip under and through. Any fishing jetty has all the rocks you need to hold summer flounder so we fly fished the Breezy Point Jetty in Queens New York with pleasant results. Fished the Breezy Point Jetty for about 2-3 hours until dark. Landed 3 flatfish and probably missed about the same or more. The fluke were all mostly pretty close keepers in the 18"+ range. I am 100% sure a huge summer flounder was lurking in the area too so well have to go back to get him!
Any fishing jetty would yield the same approximate results I am 100% sure. I fished today with the 8 weight fly rod with a 9 weight floating weight forward line. I actually prefer a 3-4 IPS 10ft sink tip but this is the line I had set up. Important for the floating line was a long 13' leader. 10' to 15' would suffice all the same. the long tapered leader allows the weighted fly to get down and stay down yet dance naturally with the oceans currents. That's everything you want. Learn to work with you got and the fish are yours not matter what you use. I always say i can catch fish with an orange peel if thats all I had. I can recall catching sunny's on pine needles come to think about it. Any-how's have fun out there and we are always happy to share our experiences with all those around the world and hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it.

I was wounding about the way you strip the line is it more of a dragging strip or just short pulls? I really enjoy the vids. Tight Lines and Good Fishing 🎣

Hi John and thanks and good question, I let the fish dictate the terms. If they are pushing out hard I will use shorter strips while maintaining proper tension. When they swim in I will use longer strips sometimes even holding the rod over my head to maintain tension and keep the slack out
@FishYourWay
@FishYourWay 5 лет назад
I may have misread your question, I think you mean stripping as I am working the fly? I vary ALOT pretty much as I show in the video is how I work the fly. Lots of pauses too and sometime nothing a dead stand still. ALSO I if you have not noticed I am very unconventional I have no rules per working flies as well as line and rod and will use some rod tip too. I feel you can work and impart action on the fly a longer period of time in a zone if you use your rod. YES, you will often be at a bad angle BUT you will get those extra strikes and have a chance. I try to envision in my head what the fly is doing underwater when i work it.

Thank you for the very helpful info. After watching one vid last season i was able to get my first Flounder on a Fly. But I felt like I wasn’t working the fly properly but after your reply I now have more confidents in how I’m fishing. Keep up the Awesome work with the videos. Tight Lines And Good Fishing.

Went out to Coney Island in the morning. By 10 o’clock was too hot 🥵. No fish only crabs. I cross few times at Breezy Point but they saying you need to apply for permit 4x4 cars.

Its getting warmer now could bring interesting fishing. Sometimes early morning or late night in summer is good. Fluke do like daytime I think they see the contrast in the sun looking up well! Thanks Riyad

Hi Jerry, You have pretty good luck with your fly rod. How do you get the clouser down to the bottom if the tide is running? I have a hard time getting a 1-1/2 oz bucktail to stay down when I'm fishing the inlet. Good luck, Mickey
@FishYourWay
@FishYourWay 5 лет назад
Thanks Mickey hope you have a awesome holiday and good question! Its actually a little different with a fly. Was actually thinking about the difference while laying down last night trying to compare a bucktail with a spinning rod and one with a fly rod. They are actually the same lure! With the fly and a proper fly line it almost can present itself in a vertical presentation as if it were being fished from a boat. Then it wishes about with the currents naturally breaking free from its bonds to the line. Also I want it near the bottom and not hugging MOST THE TIME. Let the currents push it around. The fly lines sets the bucktail from above the best angle of attack for a bucktail! A bucktail on a spinning rod is almost always horizontal. Here I would have started with a 1/4 ounce cast up current and work slow back with a spinner trying the let the current play the lure. may give the bucktail some life like a flyline but the angle of presentation would never be as vertical unless you fished flush to the rock with a spinner and plenty of fish are flush to the rock! the upside of a bucktail; is you can cover more water or work a beach surf more effectively which would make it shine over a fly presentation.

Hi Jerry, great description. I fish bucktails from a boat most of the time. It seems like I have to re-learn how to use them each time I fish the surf or inlet. Thanks for the reply, Mickey

There is a parking sticker you can get or you can take public transport and cycle in and fish Wild Man. I see a lot of those green bikes around too and often a few bikes chained up in the lot.

Seems like you are handlining the fish in and not using the reel?
@FishYourWay
@FishYourWay 5 лет назад
Yes, it seems dull when you think about it but is quite enjoyable as you have the sensation as what the fish is doing via rod and line and just static! If they take it to the reel then thats where ya go or to the back if it gets there! I prefer hand lining them then the reel it is more smooth and sensitive in short. Good question!

How is that jetty? I hear it gets flooded and becomes dangerous
@FishYourWay
@FishYourWay 5 лет назад
Yes it does, always be careful. A little more wind and swell it would have and not much either. Same case with a little rock on a stream side or parking lot curb always be careful around any structure!

What kind of lure did you use ?
@FishYourWay
@FishYourWay 5 лет назад
I was using clouser minnows they are like bucktails if you were using casting tackle or hair jigs. some bucktail on a hook with dumbell eyes to get em down, good question

You will need a permit to park or you can bicycle then walk. You can drive on the sand with a permit after September if you have 4wd

Hey Jerry did you forget your stripping basket?
@FishYourWay
@FishYourWay 5 лет назад
Good question ecksdog, I did have one but did not use it I like to see my feet when i am standing between rocks and not looking to get 100' I like them if I am wading and need a few extra yards. Land or in the air I prefer to lay the line. Windy windy days i will use one to keep the line from blowing all over. the strip basket is one of the most complex pieces of equipment! Have to do a video about them sometime!
