Fishing crew denied $3.5M in prize money after 600-pound marlin DQ’d in tournament

A shark took a bite out of one crew’s dream of winning a high-stakes fishing competition when the massive marlin they reeled in was disqualified by tournament officials for being mutilated.
The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in North Carolina ended in controversy after the crew dubbed Sensation boasted a whopping 619-pound marlin Saturday that would have clinched the team members more than $3 million in prize money, but was disallowed because it appeared to be bitten by sharks.
“It was determined that Sensation’s 619.4 lb. Blue Marlin is disqualified due to mutilation caused by a shark or other marine animal,” the tourney officials wrote in a statement Sunday. “It was deemed that the fish was mutilated before it was landed or boated and therefore it was disqualified.”

The ruling is that the shark made it easier to reel in. They had to make a ruling about wounded catches because people were ramming the fish with their boats at one point. However, this bite wasn't a wound or chunk missing and, more than likely didn't occur around the time of the catch. The fact is, it took them 6 hours to reel in. They did the work, not a shark that but the fish at some point in it's life.

Think about what you wrote. They lost due to a rule in the competition. Someone else was paid the by meeting all the rules of that competition. Someone had to lose, unfortunately for them a shark took a bite, case closed they lose. The fish wont go to waste as it will be sold for alot of money and bought as a delicacy. Stop your crying.

In MEE Opinion as a 17 Years Of experiences as an Alaskan Commercial Fisherman,, 🤔🤔 ummmm 🤔 if the contest was on weight AFTER on board of VESSEL = FAIR F🍕CKING GAME !!-!!!. THEE FISHERMEN LEGALLY caught a Marlin 🎣, Fought with hauling it in for 6 hrs or so.. attacked by an ocean predator ( Shark in this case ? )

Thats not because of increasing population, thats because of displacement from environments where there used to be food to sustain them, but now there is not. Thats due to a lot of factors like the acidification of the ocean and over fishing of the ocean, so like all animals they've tried moving on to new areas, it's kind of sad really.

My question is what happens to the Marlin now? Is it going to be used for food? They claim they "fought" with it for 6 hours. That Marlin was fighting for it's life, these clowns "fought" it for sport and a prize. Took a life for a prize and "glory". Let that sink in.

@@t500010000 okay then genius. Show me the timestamp of where you see the shark bite. And then explain to me how a small bite to such a large Marlin, that was obviously surviving just fine, would cause it to be easier to catch, and reel in after 6 hours. Im sure you have all the data for the average reel in time of every marlin ever caught, and I'm sure you aggregated all that data, statistically analyzed it to find a regression, and then plugged in 619.2 lbs for X, to find whether this particular Marlin's catch time, is statistically significant compared to the time it took to catch this one. If you dont have this information, you cannot accurately posit whether this marlin was "easier to catch", compared to other marlin catches. You're simply giving a baseless speculation.

Have you ever watched fishing videos? Sharks are opportunistic hunters and they can smell the blood and despite the marlin being dead tired the shark didn't effect the catch. The shark just took a chunk of an easy meal. You can't punish the fisherman. Do you expect them to toss the marlin back and start over hoping no other shark swims by and nibbles the next?
