Just how good is the fishing in California? Featuring over 800 miles of the Pacific coastline along with some of the most productive rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in the country, the Golden State is remarkably diverse. Sometimes, you’ll even feel like fishing in two completely different states!
We’ll start our journey at California’s northern tip, where the rivers and jagged Pacific coastline take center stage. By and far the top species here are Chinook Salmon. They’re as fun to catch as they are delicious and NorCal’s waters host several runs a year. Visit the Sacramento and Klamath rivers during spawning season, before they move into the Pacific’s open waters.
Next up are Striped Bass, fish for them in the San Francisco Bay area during the winter months. While you’re there, getting in on the Sturgeon fishing action is more than worth your while. There’s also a host of other species you catch all along the coast including Calico, Spotted Bay, and Sand Bass, as well as Lingcod, Rockfish, and California Halibut.
If it’s really big fish you’re after, though, you might want to turn your attention South. Whether it be the warm climate or favorable Pacific currents, the fish in Southern California are seriously massive. Head out of the LA area or San Diego and you’ll be hunting big game species in no time.
We’re talking huge schools of Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi. It’s also where you’ll find one of California’s signature fish - Yellowtail Amberjack. This species loves to hang out around the rocky shorelines of Catalina and San Clemente Islands nearly year-round. You don’t want to miss it!
But, before you head out you’ll need to make sure you’re following all the local rules and regulations. That includes purchasing a fishing license and making sure you’re respecting harvesting seasons and bag limits. If you’re new to the area, heading out with a local guide is a surefire way to make sure you’re both respecting the rules and getting the most of our trip.
