Join me on a wee jaunt to the shores of Loch Linnhe, close to the island of Lismore, for a spot of sea fishing on a fine autumnal day. Enjoy some fine views of the surrounding hills.

As a fellow fishermen, I have some questions. What type and length of pole do you use? Also what reel and weight of line do you use? Hope to hear from you soon. Tight Lines.

Good morning James, sorry for the late reply. I am camping in the far BW of Scotland just now and don’t have very good phone signal. I have fairly low end gear. I’m not much of a fisherman, but I really enjoy trying a few casts during my camping trips. I am currently using Ron Thompson poles with Diawa reels. I’m sorry, I don’t recall the model types. I tend to fish amongst the rocks and kelp beds, trying for pollock. So, the risk of getting snagged is quite high. Therefore, I use reasonably tough line (mono is my preference), usually around 25lb. I use 20, 40 and 60 gm lures. I find simple silver fish lures work well for pollock. I use various lengths of poles. I have a little 6’ pole for use in the kayak. From shore I usually use poles from around 8’. I do have a 10’ pole but seldom use it. I sometimes rig my kayak pole with 10lb flotation line and use a spinner to trawl the surface. That seems to work well for Coalies. (Getting snagged up when in the kayak is a nuisance, hence fishing the surface). Hope this helps, but I am very much an amateur and you are probably more experienced than I am. Tight lines, and huge thanks for viewing and commenting. Dave

Hi Rob, thanks for viewing and commenting, very much appreciated. I've caught fish at that spot year round. And, the presence of seals and otters suggest to me that there are always some species of fish around. I think he was probably referring to the mackerel, which are present in large numbers in the summer. A common question on the sea fishing FB group sites is; "are they in yet?" This is also referring to mackerel. I usually seek out coalie and pollock. I don't do much winter fishing but have caught both species from the shore in the depth of winter in many locations in the West of Scotland. Hope this helps.I should say I'm far from an expert fisherman and simply like to try my luck with some basic gear and very limited knowledge. Thanks again for viewing. ATB, Dave

@@daveoutdoorsscotland2854 thanks Dave ,,i was thinking about early September ,,is it tidal up as far as bunree ,?,

@@rabfraser1234 The fishing should be good in September. Yes, it is tidal as far as Bunree, and beyond. The tides races through the Corran Narrows, throwing up sediment from the bottom and kelp beds, which the fish feed on. It can be quite hard fishing the fast moving waters of the tidal race and you need to be careful fishing from shore. Personally, I wouldn't venture onto that stretch of water in my kayak. I've shore fished from the Ardgour (Corran) side, casting into the eddies and slack water on the edge of the race and had some luck. The shore on the Corran side is gently sloping and you have to cast a long way to get beyond the shallow water. I've never fished the Bunree side but I'm confident it would be better. I don't have any experience of fishing further 'inland' (towards Fort William) but guess this would not be very good. I've seen the odd fisherman casting off the rocks at the picnic site near Corrychurrachan but wouldn't recommend fishing that spot as it seems to be used by divers and snorkelers.I've also fished the points (Rubha Mor and Rubha Mheadhonach) at Cuil and caught fish but found these points to be pretty windy. I suggest you try fishing from the rocks around Bunree first and, if this is not fruitful, drive down to Port Appin, or even as far as the Sound of Kerrera. Another good day trip would be to take the wee ferry boat across to Lismore and fish the NW end of the island. It can be difficult getting down to the sea but it is worth the effort for the views and the fishing has always been good for me. Hope this helps with your trip planning. ATB, Dave

Good morning David, glad you enjoyed the video. Likewise, I'm really looking forward to getting out and about again. Fingers crossed we will get a green light on April 26th. The jacket is a Fjallraven No. 8 Smock. It is a pretty expensive jacket but very tough and great for the fishing and bushcraft type camping. It was also idea workwear when I was out and about in dense, thorny vegetation. I think it is the most thorn-proof jacket I've ever owned. The trousers are also Fjallraven and the model type is Barents Pro. I prefer the Barents Pro trousers because they are sold as 'raw length', meaning I can adjust the leg length to suit (I'm quite tall so the standard leg-length of most trekking trousers is a wee bit short for me). Fjallraven make good gear, if a little pricy, and it's worth checking out their website. I'd advise shopping around though as you can often get a reasonable discount. The 'Numbers Series' are their premier range but they also have similar garments, which are a little lighter and often a fair bit cheaper. I also wear Kuhl trousers for hiking and camping and although the fit is not quite so good for me, they are tough and reasonably priced. Another consideration for camping attire, especially if you're not planning on long hikes, is to simply use work-wear. In winter, when camping in the teepee, I often wear Dickies workwear...great for sitting by the fire and scrambling around in camp. Hope this helps. ATB, Dave
