I hit Lake Cavanaugh this past Sunday morning and, in short, left with nothing. Landed and released a small trout and had several other hits that didn't stick (annoying).
The conditions were perfect. Couldn't ask for a better morning to be out on the water. So I am quite grateful for that. Particularly when compared to my last trip out to Cavanaugh...
Water is still a bit cold for good Kokanee fishing. The surface was around 46°. I'm always looking for about 50° - 53°. Of course, when it gets warmer you start looking for the thermocline as a good starting point for depth.
I tried a wide assortment of lures, depths, and speeds. Just didn't seem to want to bite. I did see a handful of schools in the middle of the lake. I ran through them a few times but they just wouldn't take the bait.
I'm thinking I will try Stevens the next chance I get and see how that goes. It may still be a bit early there as well.
