lemme give you some tips. I love the nymphing content..Hold the line above the reel in your left hand and you will be able to keep your bugs in the strike zone better(this is done by coiling the line in your left hand while your bugs drift to take up the slack and keep the bug off the bottom) it will also give you a better hookset as you will be connected to your flies at all times. My all time favorite nymph is the Walts worm! I recommend old dominion trout bum if you want more indepth euro nymphing tips.

There are a lot of situations but if it's larger fish, 24" or larger, my fly is the muddler minnow. There are many other great choices. Larger line is not always the answer, but lighter drag and more patience.

One of my favorite flies is a woolly bugger in black, olive or brown. But any type of leach pattern is a go to for me. Another favorite for me is chronamid and blood worm or nymph. Ears hair nymph; but these are more of a still water fly. But both are very effective

Justin, when you are presenting a fly perpendicular to the current, as your fly moves downstream you have to change your hookset angle from downstream to in along the bank where you are closest to. This gives you a higher percentage hookup than pulling straight up. Also the larvae that you found looked like a stonefly husk.

I've fished there plenty of times. And it is a little piece of Heaven for my family to visit. Personally I do well on black and brown woolly buggers and muddler minnows when I'm going after the bigger trout there. My PB was a catch and release 28" lovely Rainbow I caught in 2012. But i must say you lose more big ones than you catch. lol But hey, it's all about the fun. Thanks for sharing your PB and experience.

My go-to: elk hair caddis dry up top, bead-head prince nymph below. I know roughly where you guys are fishing and that combo slays there in late August/early September. That combo, and a selection of hoppers matching the relevant size around and you're golden. Actual grasshoppers have been HUGE this year.

My biggest advice that’s worked the best for me and the way that I was taught, is that when you’re setting the hook, just lightly raise your fly rod and tug (not yank) your fly line. Once I got that down, I never had any issues! Even with light leaders. Like one was said earlier, heavier doesn’t always mean better. Fly fishing is all about technique!

For the euro rig, a pheasant tail and hares ear are the equivalents to black and blue jigs and jerk baits. They imitate a lot and can catch fish all over. A well presented fly on heavy tippet is important for larger fish. Keeping slack minimal is important too, so manage line slightly with your left hand. Loving the videos and tight lines!!

For a nymph I go with "the fly formerly known as prince". It's a standard bead head prince nymph with holographic wings. Caught trout everywhere I've been on it. For a dry, small hopper or a #16 caddis. Couple tips... Keep the line between your forefinger and the rod while drifting. That way you can pinch the line when lifting and get a better hookset. Also, looked like you were drifting pretty far downstream from yourself. I try to start my drift at 45 degrees upstream of myself and never go past 45 degrees downstream. Since trout are always facing upstream looking for food, when you drift downstream from yourself and get an eat, when you go to set the hook you are actually pulling the fly/nymph away from the fishes mouth.
@bradcastaneda
@bradcastaneda 7 месяцев назад
Awesome video. Make sure to pinch the line with your right index finger when you’re fishing. That’s how you keep tension on the line and properly set the hook. Also, tie the tippet ring onto your leader while it’s still on the clip. That way you aren’t having to hold on to that tiny ring alone.

_My go to fly is called a Sheep Creek Special. There's a pretty cool story behind how it originated. I tie the traditional pattern, as well as variants of it. Like an all black one with a wood duck wing. I really enjoyed this video though, and would love to fly fish Colorado sometime._ 💯💯

Wolly bugger is a great one to tie anytime of year. Prince nymph also. San Juan worm. Also little tip. The flat slower is gonna be harder to fish, they have alot more time to examine your presentation especially in pressured streams. I try to stick to the riffles. Love the video as usual!!

Jighead pheasant tail nymph all the way. Works in every river in the US, and since it is a jighead, it doesn’t snag up as much. It’s great to see you growing in fly fishing each time you go out!

The black and blue jig of the fly fishing world is a black wooly bugger. Use a small size in a dead drift fashion to imitate a leech. Use a larger size swung and stripped in the current to imitate a minnow. Fish eat those two food sources everywhere.

I find confidence flies to be the go to, it's so much more presentation than anything... but if I had to choose, especially with Euro Nymphing, a small jigged streamer and just play with depths and drifts, deadly!

I personally hate tippet rings. I find they break my line often and I just tie surgeons knots and blood knots. Dry fly fishing is the best and my go to in my home of Colorado would be olive caddis in 16 or 18 or a BWO in 20 or 22. Chubby Chernobyl is great too but you will always have to Match the hatch. Especially in CO. Glad to see more anglers having a blast with fly fishing. The more you do it, the better you will get and more fish you with catch. Enjoy!

Great video, you are a great all around angler. One tip that maybe you don't know yet. When fly fishing with a dry fly is better if the whole leader floats BUT THE THIPPET SINKS , that way the trout don't see the tippet cutting the surface of the water and conected to the fly. Back in the days we actually added toothpaste to the tippet to make it sink, but today we have fluorocarbon so the best leader-tippet combo for dry fly fishing is mono leader-fluoro tippet. And don't worry the dry fly still floats and you will fool way more trout.

Biggest rainbow I've ever caught a steelhead in Lake Michigan, didn't weigh them or measure them, but they were 3-5 lbs fish that were jumping 2-3' out of the water in 3-4' waves! Guy I was with said the bigger ones didn't jump "much." My Dad was fly fishing for fun while us kids were fishing for gills of beds. He hooked something that blew his rout fishing mind ended up being a couple pound yellow bullhead! Bent his rod almost in half, he was afraid he was gonna break it!

My best producing nymphs(out west) are Frenchies, peeping caddis, deep sparkle pupas, perdigons(flashy/rainbow) and barrs emergers(both BWO and PMD). In the case of this specific river, or a river with higher pressure, fishing something that the fish don’t see very often works pretty good as a tactic for skittish fish. I’ve guided for 8 years now, and find that the best producing flies change year to year and this is especially more prevalent in rivers that see more pressure. The patterns I mentioned above are great general flies that have produced lots of good quality fish for me. With euro nymphing, I would make sure to use jigs. The idea is that you’re presenting the flies by bouncing them off of the bottom or dragging them on the bottom. This will prevent your flies from getting hung up. One other piece of advice is to keep the fly line/leader under your pointer finger of the rod hand. This will make it easier to detect strikes, and your reel won’t peel out whenever you hookset.

@robwells1480
@robwells1480 8 месяцев назад
Match the hatch is the standard in fly fishing. If there are bugs flying around you on the stream try to use a fly that matches that bug. You can also pickup a rock in flowing water to find larvae you can also match. You need to keep your rod pointed at the fly as it flows and hold that line in the left hand and strip it to give it action.

The heaviest line I've ever used is 6# I mostly use 4# and with small native brookies I use 2#
@CCockrell
@CCockrell 8 месяцев назад
Hold that fly line in your hand when you are drifting your flies. You don't want to be setting the hook on the reel. Your drag is to loose to get the hook imbedded in the fishes mouth. If you keep contact on the fly line you can put more pressure on the hook set.
