This week I fish a high country lake for some of the big brown trout that live there. Shallow water, sight fishing and perfect weather! This kind of fishing takes time, patience and a lotto heart ache but when it all comes together, it's spectacular!

You can see the fly being tied on youtube. Also you can go to Phil Rowley Fly Fishing website and can see the flies there as well. Its hung under an indicator with a loop knot so the fly can move. The balanced leech hangs horizontal in the water and when nothing else works this fly will. I've had 30 plus fish days with it. Keep the great videos coming.

Hi Alex, top man again. I have so many variations on the pheasant tail and on the day they all work well. What ever pattern we come up with, I bet somebody has something similar. Years ago as a joke I tied one to look like the drummer from the muppet show. It was crazy. months later in a mag I found somebody had the same idea. I think they fished there's. I have 3 names to choose from. To go with “D”, Dave or Delilah, my granddaughter’s name,depending on sex. The third is Beans, nickname of a friend of my daughter, so you would have Frank & Beans. Love the vids and dreaming it is me catching those amazing fish.

Hi Alex, nice bit of still water fishing, at this lake there is always a very good chance to hook into a huge fish that can take you all over the weed beds. On arrival you mentioned a spooky atmosphere, reminds me when I use to night fish the little stream on Lake Okataina in Rotorua. A beautiful lake with good fish and I would have the huge lake all to myself. With the eyes of the wallabies shining out of the bush, the mist on the water with an occasional ripple and all you listened for is the “Te waka” cry from the darkness and a Maori war canoe come out of the mist! Spooky as a nightmare! Great nights of fishing. Thanks mate. Harera

I lived out there for a while and when I was down south I went out to lake Ellesmere where I sighted trout that were at least 24 -25 lbs in the little brooks or channels leading from the lake - impossible to tempt in the day with a fly apparently but I heard a few locals say they could be caught at night - I believe they were sea run fish - there were a couple of stuffed examples in a shop in Christchurch of those proportions - do you have any experience of this at all ?

Okay…a few question from Minnesota. I’ve noticed you tap on you fly rod, often, just before you start fishing? A tradition or superstition? The fly rod tube you use to hold 2 rods? Is that a 2.5” fly rod tube? Doesn’t the second rod tube fit with the rod sock? Thank you in advance and dig your videos!!! I’m headed your way in two weeks…with fly gear!!

Well done sir! If you ever come to the states, I live 30 minutes from the world's largest cutthroat trout at Pyramid Lake, NV. It's an Indian reservation and I'd love to see your video's from there. We catch trout from 4lbs-20lbs! The average I've caught is probably 8lbs this year.

Yes! Gets you out of the cold water and helps cast. You just have to fish any drop off. I've caught 11 fish over 10lbs so far this year! Gotta check it out
