I hook lots of gar but I catch about 20% of them. I think they are a blast to catch. I also like catching Bowfin or Mudfish. Lots of those over here in SWFL>

We have needle nose gar where I live and we tie a small piece of frayed nylon rope just above the cut bait to catch them. Not sure if that would work on alligator gar to help them stay on the line for you. Gar backstrap is delicious by the way. Congrats on the fishing.

If you want to keep your bait fish to last a long time without putting them in the freezer I'll tell you how. Get you butter bowl with a lad, a big thing of salt, fish oil tablets and do all I say. Put some salt on the button of the butter bowl, than put some of cut bait on top of salt after you bust some of fish oil tablets. Than you put some more salt on top of you cut bait with some more busted fish oil tablets. Continue until you fill up the butter bowl and put some salt and busted up fish oil tablets on the very top before putting the lad on. Let it set for a few days or a week anywhere you want outside of a freezer or fridge. It last you for a few years without being in the freezer or fridge. The fish oil tablets will help keep the fishy smell, just make sure you bust quite a few of them in you butter bowl. Also be careful of getting the fish oil tablets on your hands or they will smell like fish for days. You can also do this with chicken livers without the fish oil, use garlic powder and the blood from the livers instead.
