Fishing the River Gress and the River Creed in the Outer Hebrides 

The fact that the Creed was rising so fast, plus I only had an intermediate tip, really didn't help and that last spot I had a cast always holds a fish when the water is up a bit. Once the river started to drop a 14lb fish came from exactly where I was standing. As I was standing there I was trying to figure out what I'd do if a big fish tried to run below the deer fencing that you can see at the bottom of the pool and that is exactly what happened to the chap who hooked the 14lb fish. He just about managed to hold it and get it back above the fencing. The only option that I can see, if a fish went below the fence, would be to throw the rod into the river and hope that you could run to the gate, and get downstream, to find the rod again. A pretty low chance of success I'd say :-)

There is no tradition of fishing for sea trout at night simply because we can catch them in the daytime so I guess night fishing was simply thought unnecessary. I have a theory that night fishing might produce some very big fish as we usually get sea trout up to about 3lb but the sea anglers fishing off the beaches often accidentally catch sea trout and they are much larger fish that seem likely to be destined for our rivers.

Do you use a floating line for most of the season ? Thought you might have tried going a little deeper in that full flow ?

I know William, though to be honest we had good sport last year and are hopeful of good sport this coming season as well but it would be nice to go back to the pre-virus days :-)

I must have misunderstood his position on the matter, I had thought he was into bigger flies for all his sea trout. In saying that he makes so little mention of daytime sea trout fishing that might explain why I've become confused. To be honest I've never tried any of his "big" flies either night or day though I have a few somewhere with the intention of giving them a test. We don't fish at night for sea trout.
