Good tips. Someone told me recently that if you pull in the same direction that the fish is swimming that they will turn back the other direction.

I’ve lost so many fish in the past, not keeping constant pressure and a bend in the rod. Even a split second mistake of stepping off the casting deck onto the deck of the boat, and relieving pressure on the rod cost me a big tournament win. Great pointers in this video.

Just lost at least two, possibly three tarpon last night and I was heartbroken. I don’t have experience hooking onto fish of that caliber so I probably didn’t fight them as well as I should have. Though for what is worth, after the first time I was laser focused on how I played the drag up until I just about got spooled. Then I had no choice but to try to turn the fish around with a little more strength and then my jig head bent out. Was a sad night out on the water for me. Hooked the first around 10pm and then the second around 11pm (I swear that thing was about 8 feet long when I rolled over and I saw that silver flash breaking the water so really it was probably closer to 5-6). That got the adrenaline going and I was out on the water with my buddy till around 2 before I got the third bite. This one was probably half the size. Of the others, a large redfish most likely since it never jumped out of the water but it also pulled drag like it was nothing up until the hook popped out. This one may have been a bad hook set or just bad luck for me. I have some experience fishing and have caught bass plenty and typical inshore fare quite a few times but never something quite like that. Probably a combination of lack of experience and underpowered gear. Lesson learned and I’ll never forget last night. Anyways that’s what brings me here. So I have a better shot the next time something crazy like that happens.

Chris Myers Indian River. Have fished there before and after but never at night like that. First time I’ve been bit by anything that big. Funny thing was that for the second bite I was in my buddies boat but in the heat of the moment we took too long to get her going to chase and lost the fish. Third time we started moving but luck wasn’t on my side and it just popped out. Still thinking about that night sometimes!

I had a monster of a fight one my hands the other day and i only just started fishing again after 20 ish years. I manage to get it to the pier after a good 5min fight by doing what was said in this video but i also had to talk a few steps backwards as my rod isn't meant for the bigger fish. It swam under the pier and my line rubbed against pylon and snapped the line as i had the most tension on the line and rod that would allow me to put on it. I didn't care if i broke the rob i just wanted to land the it. I did get a bit of a look at it when it came close to the pier and no idea what it was but it was around 1meter(around 39 inches) long and had a green colour to it on the top of it. Still no idea what it was, but it was sure of a hell of a fun fight and has my hyped up for the next time i go back to that place.

Thank you! So worried ima ruin my first rod. So if they're taking line tip down once that stop bend er' back?
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers Год назад
If they are taking a bunch of line quickly, I like to point the rod at them if it is open water and I don't need to force them away from structure. It is very important to keep that tip bent and the line under constant tension as you are pumping them in.
@patindaytona
@patindaytona 4 года назад
So you do point the rod towards the fish when he is making a run. I wasn't sure about that, thanks.

Does same thing apply on ultra light rod for trophy trout? I broked a 2 piece rod and now bought a 1 piece rod im afraid to snap it again..
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers 5 лет назад
I have a set of ultralight panfish rods we use in the saltwater all the time. One guy landed a redfish over 20lbs recently on it. I cannot recall ever seeing a rod break from fighting a fish unless the rod was pointing up while the fish was right next to the boat or someone grabbed the rod past halfway with one hand while trying to grab a fish. You rod may have had a defect or had some unseen damage. It is certainly a rare occurrence. I have myself and seen many others catch very large fish on very light rods. I would not be too concerned. if you are, get one with a lifetime guarantee. There are many of them that offer that. i have done thousands of charters and only rods that have been broken are from people kicking them while they are in the horizontal rod racks.
@samsadowitz1724
@samsadowitz1724 4 года назад
@@CaptChrisMyers the technique at 1:30 was exactly how i was able to land a monster striped bass on panfish gear. The thing had to be between 20 and 30 pounds and i was fishing for bluegills with the appropriate setup for that (size 6 light wire hook, and 4 pound leader with a 6 pound main line). These techniques work!!!
@BobbyGloBeatz
@BobbyGloBeatz 2 года назад
So why should you point your rod down or parallel to the ground as a fish pulls drag? i feel like that can create slack in the line if done wrong
@CaptChrisMyers
@CaptChrisMyers 2 года назад
By pulling low and to the side, you can put pressure directly opposite the fish's direction of travel. Lifting up on a fish that is running away pulls at an angle with less pressure. if the fish is diving deep, then upward would be best.

So the problem I’m having is, I’m fighting a fish with just enough drag to pull him in but not break my pole. But sometimes I’m Fighting the fish for about 3-4 minutes and by the time I get him in my hand, he’s pretty much dead from exhaustion

I would say your drag is not tight enough or the tackle is too light for the size of the fish.
