Some under ice views from beautiful lake Saarijärvi in Vaala, Finland
Divers:
Fisherman: Eelis Rankka
Fisherman's friend: Tommi Salminen
Boy with the balloon: Jukka Pelttari
Camera and editing: Juuso Mettälä
Manuscript by Juuso Mettälä and Eelis Rankka
Safety divers: Esa Vuoppola and Juhana Heino
Music: Stefano Mocini: The end of the doubs
Couple of things about this video:
Camera I used was Sony HDR-SR11 with Amphibico HD Elite housing.
The Wheelbarrow was saved from the bottom of the lake and I have used it many times after that.
The rubber duck and the balloon are also home with me.
None of the divers got any permanent damage either.
And yes, we had a lot of fun making this video.
-Juuso

For all who don't know... They are standing upside down under the ice (that's why the bubbles 'seem' to be falling from their faces, but its actually going vertical towards the sky). The reason they can do this and why they don't sink to the bottom is because of their scuba gear. You can regulate your buoyancy with scuba gear and by decreasing the weight your carrying. Also, cold water is more dense than warm water, so that means your more buoyant in cold water.

Well you could still save it. You had access to a device of some sort to go online. So if you were at a library, download the video with a RU-vid to mp3 site, then upload it to either a personal RU-vid channel (unlisted as to not take credit away from the original) or upload to Dropbox, google drive Ect. You don’t have to own a device to make back ups of things.

Brilliant! I love doing that when I'm diving, swimming in every direction and avoiding aligning myself so i'm oriented with gravity, it gives a floating/flying feeling that's very hard to describe! "Standing" upside down on a object that's in the surface of water can be done even with the common Diver's equipment, all you need is enough flotation to beat gravity, and calm waters to avoid loosing balance.

Zirka Fin you're totally right, it doesn't mean that it's going to feel room temperature. The air they're breathing will be basically the temp of the water they're in. the mask they have doesn't cover all of their face. I haven't worn a wet suit rated for that temperature, but the one I wore let water enter when I hit its range of motion. dry suit helps a ton but that face still hits that water

So how does this actually feel? I mean, gravity is pulling you down, and buoyancy is pushing you up. But I imagine you would still get the blood rush and everything that comes from being upside down. I know astronauts in the neutral buoyancy lab are limited in the amount of time they can spend inverted for precisely this reason.

It's filmed upside down. They are wearing drysuits. These cover their bodies and keep them warm and dry in cold water. Buoyancy is controlled by inflating the suit, not the BCD. One hazard of drysuits is inversion, causing air to rise to the legs. You train to prevent it and recover from it. In this case they are taking advantage of it. Great video.

They are upside down and the "water" is actually air. Hence why the wheel barrow looked like it floated up and why their breath floats down

Wish they had called it something else... it's fun to mess with people's minds by playing past the title and asking them if they know what planet these guys were working on! Wish they'd do more videos, I LOVE watching bubbles under ice!

Ah, the trials and tribulations of underwater everyday life, while constantly and spontaneously vomiting large quantities of air bubbles

In difference to the bottle, a swim suit is elastic, which allows the air to move around. You can test it out by taking a plastic glove, putting a little bit of air in it, sealing it and placing it under water. When you hold on to the glove in different places, the air in the glove will always move upwards.

Man I remember watching this video awhile ago, and it’s still one of my favorites on the web! Just wanted to thank you guys for helping with inspiring me to pursue diving, as I will FINALLY be getting my certification in May. 😁

@@petrusinvictus3603 Thanks! Since I wrote this comment 3 years ago, I’ve done lots of dives from my local lakes, the Puget Sound, and the coral reefs and wrecks of Fiji back in 2019 before the pandemic. I used to listen to my grandfathers stories of diving, watched loads of videos like this as a kid, and when I finally got certified it felt like a real accomplishment. As far as safety go’s, your never too experienced to learn more and stay on your toes(fins). I’m thankful that my wife is also my dive buddy, I can’t think of anyone more concerned about my safety than her. Respect the water and heed her warning and the underwater world can be an otherworldly experience.

@@petrusinvictus3603 absolutely, you never do anything your not trained for and never dive outside your limits. Safety always comes first on a dive.
