Fishing with Live Pilchards to Catch Mangrove Island Snook

In this video, I used live pilchards (greenbacks/whitebait) to catch snook that were hanging around a mangrove island just north of Tampa Bay, Florida. I really didn't get any bites until I started live chumming with the pilchards. This got the snook fired up and then I was able to catch a couple fish. I also discuss the rig and tactics I used in this video to catch these snook.

I was simply pitching a live shrimp on a thin wire #2 hook with a splitshot under docks today. Got a 19" and 22" today. Biggest ever was on a live mullet pitched into the mangroves from my boat (profile pic). You just gotta put the time in on the water bro. Good luck.

It's the 45 Yeti and no it's not strapped down. If it's weighed down with drinks and ice, then I keep it up on the bow when running on calm days. If there's nothing in it or it's rougher, then I bring it down when running

I forgot to ask the other day but what knot do you tie for your flourocarbon leaders? Im trying to find a good easy knot to learn! And do you use a mono backing for your braid or electrical tape to the reel?

I use a double uni knot when tying leader to braid and a normal uni knot when tying leader to the hook. Also, I use electrical tape on the spool

What can I catch on the skyway during the summer? I’ve only been fishing there in the fall and the best time to go fishing there is at sunset but I can only catch smaller fish.

There's a lot of spanish mackerel around the skyway in the summer. You could also get some snapper and grouper fishing the bottom

What do you use for hooks? The snook always snap my line off!!!

If it's snapping your line, it's not the hook, it's the line. I use 30lbs braid main line with 40 to 50lbs floro leader on a 7 foot heavy with a 4000 Penn reel. You need to go heavier. :-)
