This great axe has a hollow handle and a useful carry case. I explore some of the many options for incorporating a survival kit based on the 5 'C's' of Survival. Please let me know if you can think of any improvements.
The Fiskars range of tools tend to come with those hollow handles and I have a folding saw that is the same. You've given me some great ideas with this video. Thanks.
On the ferro rod use jute twine for fire starter and maybe aluminium foil for a container to boil water. I also added an unlubricated condom and a small bandana (to protect condom) for water carrying. Good thinking though.
Great idea. I've just purchased one of these hatchets and I'll be using a few of these ideas. As for the 5th C (cover) I'm not sure what you could add. My only idea that would be compact is maybe a plastic shower curtain or something that could be folded small and fixed to the back of the axe sheath. It could be used with your cordage to make a small plow point shelter or something. Thus could be useful in areas without many trees or natural shelter materials. But with that much cordage and a good hatchet one could make all sorts of shelters in the forest. Once again, thanks for the great idea sir!
Bless you my friend and thanks for your valuable feedback. I think the answer lies with the sheath as you say ( or on your person) and to try and attach something to it. I recall seeing a video by Colhane a few years ago where he took a painter's tarp (basically a thin plastic i polythene sheet with him). This would be a possibility I suppose but they are very thin and not that strong. Alternatively, it may simply depend on your attire you have with you - a poncho would be invaluable I'm sure. Nicely done, thanks for sharing, the handle part of the supplied guard could also have a Paracord wrap and also have waterproof matches ( or something similar) inserted it the plastic grove before wrapping, 😃
I’ve only just started building up my survival kit. So far I’ve got a Mil-tec 88L tactical army backpack. I got a steel strike for fire 🔥 camouflage parachord 100 feet. A £13 mora rescue knife. Lansk sharpener puck. A Remos wet stone. A vaxiuja poncho. A Geertop 1 man Bivy tent. And of course I purchased the Fiskars x7 axe. And I also got the SAS survival guide and the complete SAS survival Manuel. Is there anything else I need do you think?
Hello mate. Good start buddy. You will need a stainless steel water bottle and cup (or titanium but these are far more expensive), a torch (head torch is preferable) and spare batteries, a BIC lighter as a minimum. Use these first and practice. Then develop from there depending on your location and person al needs. Where are you based mate? Des
I’d use the paracord to plug the hole in the handle or wrapping it around the handle of the carrier rather than wrapping it around the axe handle and letting it get damaged when the axe gets used.
Hiya Chief. If you haven't got space to store your survival kit and you have an axe with a hollow handle ........ why not use it and maximise its utility and functionality? Also, it's pretty handy having some additional resources in case you lose your main kit. It doesn't weigh anything and takes up no extra space. Kerching!! Best wishes, Des
