An adventure into the mountains to find an abandoned 19th century horse farms ends with a good pile of coins and an exciting piece of jewelry! Shirts, Stickers, Music & More: www.GMMD.us Original music by Brad Martin
That vaguely triangular brass piece is the top of a patchbox, found on the butt of a muzzleloader. It's likely related to that ramrod ferrule you dug up earlier in the video. There are regional styles to patchboxes, so with a little research, you'll discover which school of gunsmiths produced the original rifle/musket/fowling piece.
I always enjoy your work. I often wonder just how many hours of footage you end up with on any given outing. From your setup shots of you walking in and out of frame and all the really cool nature highlights you find. Then there is the editing. Lol great new site. Hope you will revisit soon. Great work. Thank you for sharing.
I think that piece of jewelry is the coolest thing you’ve ever found...I wonder if it might have been a medal awarded for horse training...thanks for sharing!
See, this is why I like watching you. You find something, don’t know what it is and ask if we do. The pendant really intrigued me, so I started reading the comments. I have never seen or heard the word intaglio before....so I go to Google. Now I know what it is and learned something new! Thanks for that! Enjoy your spring. It was over 90 here in Texas today!
Sure enjoy watching you finding treasure. It is like mudlarking the Thames foreshore in London. Finding the Colonial treasures is exciting. I live in far Eastern Or. near the Oregon Trail. You can still see the some of the trail that has survived! Thank you for being so respectful of everything!
The bit you found is a Mullen mouth snaffle with loose rings ( missing one of the rings). If you measure the bar from end to end it will tell you if it was used for a light horse or a draft horse. 6 inches or larger is usually draft size. We use these today, they are virtually unchanged in design. Sweet find!
Brad, yesterday my wife came across an article about you. It talked about you finding a fancy metal object (maybe an eskusion) and your 8 reale. I had just finished watching your RU-vid video of that same dig. I really like your videos and your interesting finds. Do you know Digger Charlie from New Hampshire? He does the same thing as you on Stealth Diggers and Not Thursday channels. Uncovering lost history is really awesome. Thanks for all of your efforts.
As a 76 year old Grandma I have to say I have ready enjoyed your videos. I have macular degeneration and going to be blind one of the days in near future. Plus the bones on my spine are fusing on top of each other pinching nerves. Lumbar Spondylosis of the spine. So besides readying my Bible and memorizing scriptures... your u tube channel has brought me comfort seeing all the beautiful nature and enjoying your exciting finds. Thank you for keeping your channel wholesome and I do enjoy the music you have made with your guitar. It helps me forget about the terrible pain I bare. I pray the Lord will keep you and your family safe and well. Bless you my friend.
You are my favorite MD video site. Your videography is great. background music great, narration informative without being routine and your finds make me envious!
The horse pendant is a representation of Alexander the Great and his horse Bucephalus. From a statue in Edinburgh Scotland. Enjoyed your video as much for the walk in the woods as the finds.
I love seeing your finds, and your music is always interesting and high quality. The clear tidbits of social history and the nature photography are so appreciated too. You do such a great job of sharing the beautiful aspects of this land, with appreciation and knowledge. I’m so glad I found your Chanel! 😊😊😊
Hematite stone was used in jewelry carvings. May be what you have there, Very nice find. The ramrod holder is unusual too. Thanks for sharing your passion with us. It's beautiful out there.
We enjoy your videos very much. We love your quiet passion for what you do. We are, as you, interested in early American history and its relics. Sometimes when resting, I forget to hit like, because it "rolls" from one video to another. Thank you for your diligence to include us in each meaningful find. We enjoy your videos. Thank you for doing this.
19:00 2 coins in one spot...so many scenarios come to mind! he was running after a loose horse and the coins finally rubbed thru a new hole in his pocket and there you go, and 200 yrs later you find it...cool! You are such a darling, love walking around in the woods with you.
Love the old coins and artifacts. You always seem to find new and different items that no one else finds. That piece that you thought was part of a rifle (musket) was cool and also the horse jewelry piece.
Wow, another awesome video from Brad! Really amazing finds! That horse piece is both amazing and fascinating. As I've mentioned before, I love history. I would be in awe if I (we) could go back in time, and be able to see who the person was who dropped whatever, what was happening in that area, and a general way of life. If, perhaps, a passer-by or fly on a tree. See you next time bud.
The carved stone is a rendering of the "Marly Horse". The original sculpture was commissioned by King Louis XIV of France and the sculpture is now housed at the Musee de Louvre in France.
The second possible gun piece you said was mixed in with a bunch of iron. It looks like a butt plate. I wonder if the iron would have been the barrel. What an amazing permission with awesome finds. Thanks for taking us along and take care.
Intrigued by the necklace pendant you found. It looks like an Intaglio , a carved glass pendant usually done in the form of a cameo, so the horse one is very unusual. They were very popular during the Victorian era.
That's an interesting idea about the horse pendant possibly being a seal signifying their particular farm. Maybe they kept it on a chain for ease of use. Great video!
They made large cents into all kinds of stuff I remember hearing a story from another treasure hunter that they actually raise the price of roofing washers to $0.02 each at which point everyone started drilling out their large cents and using them as washers. I don't know if it was a local thing here but I have found a ton of them
That is for sure a great location,I really like that possible musket plate, with that type of mounting bracket I'd say that likely was on the cheek side of the stock!& Usually had a hinged container inlaid to store the cloth patches in, take care brother and HH--Brian
Brad, you had some great finds on this farm! I absolutely love the horse necklace, it's beautiful! Thank you for another trip into the lovely Vermont woods!
I started watching a couple month ago after seeing your channel at my parents. Since then I have Subscribed and look every week for new adventure. I love your respectful nature for all things and your “clean” vocabulary !! Appreciate your research as well. I hear your music in my head now when I’m walking outside ! Lol Be safe. Be blessed. < Cyndi of the Frozen Chosen in AK
Your videos are the highlight of my Friday's RU-vid viewing, I said it before but I'm in the UK with metal objects in the ground that go back 3000 years.... However I'm highly interested in the Colonial history of the USA and your expeditions through the backwoods of Vermont really help bring it to life. Good luck for the rest of the season, hope you find a Spanish or even better English Gold coin, statistically there has to be the odd dropped hammered one hiding somewhere. Heck even a really early Silver coin would be awesome.... They must be out there.
Really enjoyed this episode Brad. I'm sure you'll update us on the wax seal/pendant but I have a hunch that could be a lot, lot older than you think. The 'horse tamer' is wearing a loin cloth and the style is Roman or ancient Greek...they turn up occasionally here in the UK and no reason why a colonial family wouldn't have an ancient artifact amongst their possessions. Good luck with the research...Tim
Love those beautiful woods. It is my dream find bucket lister to ever find a US Large Cent, or a British copper, but that's never going to happen in Florida! Great video, great finds, another good one Brad. Rob Diggin' Florida w/ Rob!
It makes me sad to think these families lost a very important coin! I don’t know what they could have purchased with it but I am sure it was a loss to them. The good part is that it proves some history.
I think the 'escutcheon' found around 15:00 is the lid to a creamer pot/gravy boat type vessel. The hole was for the pin hinge that allowed the lid to be swung open and closed. My best guess.
Love early spring when flowers start to bloom and trees start too bud. You have some of the prettiest woods i think I've ever seen. And what a good hunt you had that day, congrats!
Here I am again binge watching. Wonderful adventures! Great videos! Each of which deserves multiple thumbs up. Very instructional, exciting, historical, and of course fun. Thank you
Hi Mate, l enjoy your channel & the mixture of great finds you recover. I do a good deal of time detecting at ghost towns on the Goldfields here in North Queensland Australia & to date have recovered two gold coins & many silver coins. I have also detected a good deal of Chinese coins & the most l have found in one hole l dug was seven & they dated to the 16th & 17th century. All the best & l hope you have many more finds. Cheers, Pete.
You're channel is by far my favorite. Your state is the one I wanted to retire to when I got out of the Air Force. At least I can enjoy seeing your beautiful mountains through your amazing videos!!!
hey! What a great hunt for you. Wow, I love the Black Onyx Necklace (looks like black onyx) and the large cents were just a bonus..LOL..It was very interesting and as always very well produced video. I always walk away from your videos with a feeling of having been there and learned a lot about your GM history. Take care and thanks for sharing your videos!
At 16:04 there seemed to be something round with a hole in it on the ground when you were looking at the part from a musical instrument. I know you could not of missed it but I thought I would mention it anyway, probably just a leaf. Another nice video as usual. Thanks!
I just subscribed to your channel today with watching your videos today. I can't stop I'm hooked! Thank you for your hard work. Your amazing as are your finds! :)
Thank you so much. I look forward to your videos. I can tell you Enjoy metal detecting an History, which is a boon for myself and others. Aw to breathe fresh air and hiking and climbing to get where you need to go is the beginning part of a great story-teller of yonder years. Thank you.
I'm addicted to your videos. Been watching them quite a bit in the last few weeks since I found your channel again. Was wondering if you could make a suggestion on a good metal detector and probe. I just retired and plan on hitting the road in the spring full time. Would love to do some detecting around the country. Please keep up the good work with your amazing videos.
I would like to guess that the bell shaped piece is half of a door knocker. The pin hole is the pivot point so you could lift it out and knock! Don't know if these were used in this period though. Great stuff as always. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Norway!
