I agree, when I was racing in my younger years my position was so different from my current setup. Their was a rider Lucho Heria who was 5’ 6” and was riding a 58cm frame in the Tour de France climbing Alpe de Huez and he was questioned about his bike, he replied “ it just feels right for me”.... Sean Kelly rode a very small frame and a short stem and always looked bunched up on his bike. Yet he was a great Tour and classics rider.

I remember watching both Sean Kelly and I think you mean Luis 'Lucho' Herrera. You are spot on, if it feels right, don't mess with it.

Just built up a bike from a Holdsworth steel frame. Seat tube is correct for me, but I have a top tube which is a bit short. My upper body length is proportionally greater than my leg length. I now have the bike adjusted to give me the comfort which I require, but stem length on handlebar gives the impression that it doesn’t quite look right. However, everything you have referred to here is so true. Everyone is different, and bike fitting is one sure way to realise that. Thanks for covering this topic so well.

Thought I would write a note to let you know this particular video made my mind up to swap components from one frame to another. Here's the story. I have 4 bikes: Fat bike I use to exercise dogs (gets BY FAR the most hours in the last year), a steel frame mountain bike set up with road tires (super comfy set up, I'm quite pleased with my fit choices on that bike), single speed Rossin road bike, and an aluminum road bike with high end components (new ultegra 10 speed). I have set up all four of these bikes from scratch over the past 10 months. I've been self teaching every step of the way. Your channel has helped me understand the importance of setting up the road bike to the mm. I bought the aluminum 3 months ago for a screaming deal, but it was a medium frame. I thought no problem, I'll 'youtube it'. And so started the journey to find Veloharmony. After trying 3 handlebars, two forks, three seats, and 2 stems your comment about never being able to get a smaller than ideal frame to ride properly HIT ME. The handling was off, but I couldn't nail it down. It's because I don't have enough frame below me, and my stem is too long. I also raced when I was younger in the early 2000's. I was fit with a titanium bike and it was ALWAYS comfortable for me. I've been searching for that feeling on my own now; I don't remember the specific dimensions of that bike. So the journey continues. The Rossin rides really well, I mean really well. So after watching this video I've decided to swap parts to the Steel frame, perhaps get a new Italian thread BB for a compact crank (I have a 2004 Record Crank and new chours BB with 109.5mm spindles on it now). I had already swapped out the Cinelli 110mm stem to 90mm for the single speed build; but I may swap that out for a 31.8 stem and use my carbon rotundo's. I always watch your videos all the way to the end because you never know if your specific issues may come up. I also enjoyed your foot pain video very much, as I'm only on my second ride with me new shoes. Anyway, I had a lot to say. But thank you. great content~

Ciao LG. Bugno could time trial, climb and sprint all the qualities of a well rounded cyclist and he rode with such style and panache. Bartoli always looked so good on the bike, like he was born on a bicycle. Argentin was the king of the Ardennes and I thoroughly enjoyed his exploits and his winning world championship ride in Colorado was very inspiring to me during my early years in cycling.

This really makes sense. Thanks for addressing it! After 22 years away from cycling, I'm back into it! I'm a 45 years old female, but started cycling and racing at age 13. Unfortunately, I "let" life get in the way and became removed from cycling in my mid-twenties. I'm so thankful that a friend pushed me to return to the sport. I'd forgotten how much I loved (and still do) this sport! It was 1987 when I started cycling, so many of the professionals you've mentioned, I remember from "back in the day". Thanks for what you do and keep up the good work! Thanks again!

Veloharmony thanks! Greg Lemond also had a huge influence on me. I think I have Greg Lemond’s Complete Book of Cycling at home somewhere! Of course, down tube shifters were the go to, “click” shifting was the newest thing, and I “had” to have the Look pedals, which I saved money to buy.

Great to hear Robert. Unfortunately some experts don't really ride much and get things from other sources versus direct experience testing in the field. a couple weeks ago i decided to take the plunge in getting a bike fit from a reputable LBS. Since then, my usual route i wasnt getting fatigued at the usual checkpoints where i would normally be tired due to position. There was no saddle discomfort or neck pain from supporting my head up. Ive ridden over 200 miles since the bike fit and although i did not agree with the stem and saddle height adjustment the fitter made, my body’s response to it was telling me something else, it felt comfortable. Not to mention more trophys on strava that i am not trying to obtain. Keep up the good work VeloHarmony!

hi I think your advice is incredible and very generous. The one thing I have noticed about my fit over the years is that anytime I do any fitting by the numbers there always seems to be a problem. However, when I adjust by feel it is great. I guess my point is that going by numbers regarding fit, training intensity or other number related procedures is not always the best way to find what is good for you. I think it is very important to practice being in touch with your body . The numbers game seems to put many riders out of touch with what is actually good for your body. Anyway thank you very much for your extremely great videos. I just wanted to add some of what I have noticed about myself overtime. I ride about 20 hrs or more during the cycling season and about half that during winter time. Gregory

Great video. So very true and I agree with everything you say. The rise of the modern bike fitter has brought about the 'up and back' phenomena where it is assumed that up and back = comfort. Sometimes down and out/forward sounds counter intuitive but actually works. I work in a large bike store in the UK and this is a real issue now. You speak common sense and explain what and how you achieve it. As you said in life as things grow that can get out of hand. With the rise of the modern road cyclist circa 2008 is when I think it started we have unleashed some plonkers into our sport. I am glad that they found bikes, but usually they end up back at the golf club as cycling is a test. End of. Thanks for this video. Enjoyed it. Keep doing what you are doing. I paraphrase you in work now "there is fit and there is feel, big difference" Best as ever. Pete.

Even I ride a fixed gear I literally feel better now especially on the saddle shape and seat post height I have now. The only thing I need to tweak is the stem because I have a shorter arm so I need a shorter stem, if I got lucky enough maybe I find myself a short and a negative stem. In overall I like your theme "Fit" for the cycling because when I first got my bike I put the seatpost so high that I need to point down my toes every time I pedal. Great vids man looking forward for other vids like this.

Comfort is more important to me than some sort of look (like a race bike with an extremely slammed stem). I'm almost 51 years old, I don't need my back hurting and all that stuff. It's kinda tricky finding that balance between comfort and the best / most aero position as you get older, I'm still very flexible just not quite as flexible as I used to be. I rode 66.5 miles with 4,800 feet of climbing in 5.5 hours a few weekends ago, I wasn't in any pain or discomfort.

This is awesome! I have developed huge muscle imbalance and my left weak leg is keeping my fit, joy on bike to limitation. I feel good on right side but left leg can't put out equal power and my comfort goes down. I have seen a bike fitter at my bike shop. He fitted me the best he could. He told me that I don't roll my pelvis correctly and thinks it's saddle issue. I have just ordered SMP selle Italia well. I am hoping that will help. I am also yet to find good set of bibs that fit correctly and are not expensive. This is a lot if you got any tips for me I would appreciate it and thank you for your videos. Subscribed and watching videos to gain more knowledge 🙏
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 3 года назад
Imbalances can be addressed by most competent fitters and is not a reason for you to be uncomfortable on the bike. Sounds like you should find a better bike fitter. You're going to have to invest in some quality bib shorts. They don't have to be very expensive. You can try La Passione especially during their sales, also Castelli, they have really good prices. I just found a reasonable priced one with Soukesports and just released the review video. There is a discount code in the description, which should help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W8flclKH2PI.html The very cheap bibs, just don't work as well. Good Luck. Your video makes a lot of sense. I have had a static bike fit, but I don't feel that I am optimizing my potential. I am considering the Retul fit system. What do you think about that system? It is expensive, but I want to get the most out of my efforts. Thanks for any info.
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 6 лет назад
Eric, this is what I learned from my years of doing fit, regardless of what system is used, it is only as good as the skill of the user. I had a fit kit done when I competed and spent money on it and it was a complete waste because the guy didn't know what he was doing. So, Fit kit is a tool, Retul is a tool, be more concerned with the skill of the person than the tool that is being used. Spend your money carefully. Most of my fit clients were previously fitted with some system and continued to have issues. Do your research about the person or persons behind the tool. Here is a video I made that may help you select a good fitter: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PZqNNKMX3pM.html

Hi there hoping you or someone on here can help me. I'm currently riding to work and back (9 km each way) on my old hardtail MTB, and I'm starting to really enjoy the commute, it lets me unwind before getting home to my family. But my MTB is too small and I run out of gears. I'm also contemplating doing some Sunday morning rides with a group of old folk if I can keep up with them on there roadies. So I"m looking to purchase a more suitable bike i'm thinking an All-Road bike or Gravel bike as I have a few sections of awful bumpy road to traverse, and a few shortcuts across some grass fields. So at my local bike shop (Giant dealer) I have been test riding the Contend AR, and the Revolt Advanced. I'm 98kg 191cm tall and have a 900mm inseam. I have never owned a road bike so don't really know how I should feel or what signs to look for, the Revolt Advanced in a Large feels ok, but the shop owner says it looks a little small for me, the Contend AR in a Large feels like a good size for me (but I don't really know) and the owner made no comment. They are getting in a Revolt Adv in an XL for me to try hopefully this week coming up. Any tips on selecting the correct size frame? and correct bike type? If I'm between sizes do I go with the one that feels a little big? or the one that feels a little small? Thanks so much. I don't want to spend so much money on a bike to find its the wrong size or wrong type of bike for my needs.

Good points! I do have a question, however...Would you have any insight to the differences in saddle comfort when riding on the road vs. riding on a fixed turbo trainer or rollers? My saddle feels great and I can ride for hours while out on the road, but I find riding on rollers or a turbo, that the pressure from saddle is noticeable within 30 minutes of spinning. Thanks again!
@Veloharmony

it should be the same. It is likely that your setup indoors may not be level. Verify that the trainer/rollers is level with the floor.

I know you said most people who are properly fitted never really change their saddles. How about when it comes to bib shorts? I only feel 100% comfortable when I wear my castelli bib shorts vs anything else. Would you say that it’s a bike fit issue or do think it’s just a matter of also matching the bib shorts to the saddle?
@Veloharmony
@Veloharmony 7 лет назад
Spin2 Win as unique as we all are this one is a first for me. I am not disputing what you feel, but 'theoretically' you should feel good wearing most bib shorts while on the saddle, not just the Castelli. It is possible to have a preferred brand but the others should still feel good, I don't think it's the matching of the Castelli to the saddle but most likely your body's shape prefers the 'fit' of the Castelli and bind that are cut similarIy. hope this makes sense.

I subscribed after the first video. Hey, you should raffle a free online bike fit. That would be awesome.

It's interesting how the recreational cyclists just beilieve anything a bike shop rep will tell them. There are so many people working in the bike industry that just don't have passion for the sport and just work a job and wind up selling bikes to people that don't fit them and are just too mechanically complex for your weekend rider to maintain.

Hi Eldred Thanks for mentioning my comment about "big no no" thing. I am not expert, not even close to be. I dont even know where i did sound like one. Just sharing my doubts about, what is called "rule of thumb". My knowledge is based on my own experience only. Just wonder how many times you deal with people who point hoods down and forcing their wrist to be at weird angle and its how suppose to be? How this not alter using brake levers while being on hoods or drops? How many people have position on bike forcing locking their elbows and its right? Dont get me wrong... but if everything is matter of feel now many people i know never would change their fit. And why do use bike fitters then? Just play with saddle height, stem length etc. until you feel right) Its funny when one guy with 5cm shorter length make buying cranks with same arm length obsolete :). The exception not confirms the rule in this case. C`mon. You as a fiter should know that people can make their fit on the bike very bad and you know that if you change to the "more healthy" one their will claim its not comfortable for them. Body get used to certain movements and positions and this doesn`t mean that its automatically right. I am always encourage cyclist to spend their hard earned money for proper bike fit as a money "best spent" and my only advise is to ask good bike fitter. So i dont pretend to be an expert at all. BTW. I am watching all your clips and enjoy them very much. There is no nonsense talking on your channel and only reason that im not subscribe is... that im not subscribing at all. Its just my rule in the VR world. BTW2. Do you agree that despite your fit well after 3h ride you can experience some pains if your body not get used to it? BTW3 Do you agree that position on road bike will never be comfortable for first timers? What about then? So to summarise: I am not expert just only pointing out my doubts based on my experience. Where after my last fit session changes where so drastic that i`ve experience discomfort for first few hundreds kilometers. But since then, every race, every audax its painless except muscles obviosly. Following your logic i should stick with my previous fit where i wasnt aero enough and powerwise 2% less efficient. So once again... I am not expert but more point of view you know its easier to be nearer the true. Sorry for my english

Jan, I didn't remember that it was you, but I want to thank you for being so humble and coming and taking the time clear up what you meant. Much appreciated.

Yes. It was me and that hoods dropped down comment has been made as it reminds me when my cousin has nasty crash with the car because he couldn`t operate levers at full potential. He spent over 3 weeks in hospital and afraid to cycle at full speed after that. I didnt meant to offend you just shared my doubts. Hope you understand why. Cheers

Jan, the hoods are set at less than 90 degrees where he likes them and does not compromise his safety, they are not in excess of 90 degrees which is the recommended limit, he is able to reach the brakes from the drops and the tops.
