In an effort to gain better MPG for an upcoming trip, I'm learning how to tune on my FiTech EFI. We start by calibratiing the coolant temperature sensor and make a fuel economy run.

You've put so much time and energy into this system I sure hope you get it figured out. Otherwise, you might have to destroy it just to take out your frustrations...LOL. Good Luck.

I would try to set your cruise A/F ratio at around 14.2 for the 10% ethenol fuel with right around 42° of advance from your vacuum advance canister from wherever you have your total timing set. If your cruise speed @ 70 mph rpm is lower than where your total timing is all in by you'll want to curve your distributor where your total timing is all in before that speed whatever that RPM is. Try the above advance settings and adjust back and forth for optimal mpg without spark knock. MSD use to sell a stand alone knock sensor you might want to get something like this as a fine tuning tool? Timing adjustments can yield as much as 5 more mpg before the A/F ratio is dialed in. Try to change the A/F ratio before the timing though so you can dial in the timing to the A/F ratio your trying. That's where the knock sensor comes in. They make distributors that you can change the timing curve with an app on stupid smart phone now. Maybe that company will send one to you to try out in exchange for advertising it for them on your channel? Good luck, I can't wait to see how you get her over where the carb was.

Thanks for the tips. I had been playing with the timing and I do know it spark knocks under load at approx 38-40 degrees. I am still running the stock distributor so a more modern Pertronics may be in order. I'll keep messing with it and keep Y'all posted.

@@OldeCarrGuy There should be a lot less load at cruise so are you referring to having to give extra throttle as load? If this is what you're referring to then there should be a vacuum drop with added throttle backing off the vacuum advance. Total timing should be around 32° to 36° wherever your engine likes it to be. Vacuum advance will add even more timing at cruise when there is less load at lower rpm where it will pull more vacuum. Total timing should be set with the vacuum advance disconnected just like idle timing is set. If you have a non-factory cam then you shouldn't set your timing at a idle setting. You should be setting it at a total timing setting. Wherever the idle setting lands is what your idle setting will end up as. You'll possibly want an adjustable vacuum advance canister to add or limit timing when the engine is pulling vacuum. A factory distributor is set for the certain factory combo it was originally installed in. When you change what the factory did you have to start from scratch to make your custom engine combo happy. Using a factory distributor sometimes you will need to open up the slots or shorten them on the mechanical timing advance to limit or add movement if the idle timing is to high or to low if your engine doesn't like where it ends up because not all factory distributors are the same. So if your engine starts hard because there is to much advance at idle with the total advance set where the engine likes it the mechanical advance slot needs to be lengthened. If there is enough idle timing the slot needs to be shortened. There is a really good pinned thread on the subject that goes more in depth on v8buick. With the first 3 letters of comment, if I wrote it proper yt would make what I wrote disappear.

My Fitech was reading 15 degrees warmer than the engine actually was. I replaced the temperature sensor with a genuine AC Delco 213-928 and suddenly it was within a degree of actual. The sensors they send are cheap.

Have you checked the ignition timing? I always start with that before tuning the fuel. Some of the things you mentioned could be caused by the timing being out of whack. Poor fuel economy, hard starting, etc. Sounds like it might be retarded too much. I would start around 38° total. Just be sure to listen for spark knock under heavy load and back it off if necessary.
