This video is part of a new series of basic clinical skills videos.
It demonstrates how to form, size and attach a stiff neck collar to a patient. This is done to stabilise the cervical spine in a trauma patient where there is a possibility that the patient has suffered a spinal injury.

Be sure to check for capillary refill after application by pinching the end of pt's nose, or by telling them how beautiful they are so they blush.

When the 4 fingers were placed on the blue plastic... The top/4th notch was still very clearly exposed... So only the first 3 notches were covered by the fingers. But the 4th notch was still considered to be the right size for the patient? If the fingers only covered the first 2 notches... Would we consider the 3rd notch to be the neck size?

Thank you so much for this video. It really shows how to apply it. No one on my squad demonstrated how to do this so we all were just guessing. If I hadn't watched this I would have failed my test.

Take off all jewellery if you are working with a patient where gloves are required! Generally never wear jewellery around any patients. No finger rings, watches, bracelets etc. As they are bacterial nests that potentially can induce septicemia, infections of open wounds etc.

Maname Jeff I hope you're joking, EMT's and paramedics as well as nurses, etc... must wear watches to take vitals.

You have to wear a watch to check vitals..

A watch is required. I wear a wedding ring and a watch and no there has never been an issue with infection. Even in the Burn unit which is super sterile they wear jewelry.
