Fitting the Towbar was the easy part. Working out the wiring was a little more challenging. I ditched the CAN box and adapted a generic ioT relay board.
Thanks through I wish you also showed us on the part on how you connected your electrical cable to the vehicle, because most tower-bars for MK5, MK6 come without the electrical cable and the CAN power controller making it a challenging exercise worse-more no one has shared a video regarding the electrical connection of MK5 tower-bar does and don't....
Hi Pete, just about to fit the factory towbar to my 2008 Gti and will probably follow your lead even though I have the CAN power controller. From your note book at the 19:09 minute mark, I see 2.7v against the tail lights. I was thinking of picking the brake light signal up from the third/central brake light and using a 3v relay for the tail lights off the source you used, hoping that the 2.7v might be enough to trigger the 3v relay. What do you think based on your experience with it? Also would you mind sharing the wire colours?
I think optocoupler should switch on with 2,7V, probably it has resistor (or voltage divider made of two resistors) in front of it to make it able to work with 12V. Those should be removed and replaced with suitable smaller one. Even if optocoupler won't work with less than 3V, then 2,7V is more than enough to switch on npn transistor. This could be used as switch to give 12V to relay or optocoupler.
