You sir, have truly saved me hundreds this past while! Great videos and I've learned a lot in the process. Most importantly I've learned where my limits are and when I need a man like yourself round! Thanks again.

Hey up mate, This is a fantastic video. I could've done with it 2 months ago when I fitted 3 new radiators (after plastering) and my rental property. I pretty much worked it out similar to your advice but that is because of your previous plumbing & heating videos on You Tube. They need balancing and I've watched your video on that too. Cheers Mike

Great vid, proper 15mm/ half inch stuff, my house is crappy microbore so a nightmare. It has been 36 years since I used a set of benders to bend pipe (and about 25 years since I use a pair to bend electrical conduit) but I am sure it would come back to me if I had to do it. Good video, about 80% of my rads are going rusty so about time I started to replace them as they are 20 years old now and some need changing from single to double.

Great video Al . You might pop round to mine when the lockdown is done to help switch a few single rads to doubles. Rads these days rubbish , they don't make then like the old cast iron ones .

Stupid question but assume its same solder used in electronics? So can you use a soldering iron if you have one?
@dereton33
@dereton33 3 года назад
No wont get hot enough. The pipe has to get hot enough for the solder to tin to it for a good joint.
@al10587

Hi there, 8 mins in you mention having to add a bend in the pipe to get it to line up. I'm going to have this problem installing a new radiator, there is some movement in the pipes coming from the boards. Are there any quicker and easier fixes for a first timer to get the pipe to align? I'm not fussed about the valves being at a slight angle. Thanks
@dereton33
@dereton33 3 года назад
Yes if you have some play in the pipes then you may be able to pull them over to align with the valves.
@al10587
@al10587 3 года назад
@@dereton33 thanks kindly. There will be approx 20mm of movement. If there isn't enough movement how could I add a slight bend to the existing pipe?

@dereton33 Al, I have a couple of rad tail extensions to convert an imperial rad (wider) to metric. I'm replacing the rad and have noticed the thread that inserts into the rad is only about 6mm. Should I use PTFE tape or sealing cord (e.g. Loctite 55)? I couldn't tell what had been used before as it was so mangled! Thanks, Chris.
@dereton33

Hi Al, I’m looking to change the radiators in my house but I have an open vented system. Is it possible to remove a radiator and change it without having to drain the system or is draining it a must do?
@dereton33
@dereton33 3 года назад
Only possible if you can get the same size rads, then you can shut off the valves either end. If not then draining down is the only option.
@Tonysteele2
@Tonysteele2 3 года назад
Cheers for the reply al I’ll check my sizes and see. My rads are fairly old so doubt they’ll have my size. Cheers again

Hope you don’t take offence Al as a old plumber to a old plumber . But it’s ok to measure up from the skirting only if it’s level. If not for the second bracket I advise to put a level on top of your first wall bracket then the rad will be level.
@dereton33
@dereton33 3 года назад
Thanks mate as I said we all have our different ways. I knew the skirting was level, guess I should have said that in the video.

Retrofitting rads is one of my biggest bugbears. It's particularly difficult when there is no push and pull on the tails. Even more so if the walls are getting re-skimmed and despite pleas not to do so, plasterers remove the 2 top screws left in as markers for the brackets. Even worse, the customers/plasterers chuck the brackets away. Case in point: 10mm pex microbore 1st fix 3 years old, coming out of a 25mm lecky back-box 2 foot up the wall. (Not my 1st fix) Then the customer wants column rads, not std panel rads fitting and complains to me that the pipes can be seen between the columns!!! Man of house approved, woman complained. Rads off, smash off plaster, re-route pipework, re-plaster, mist coat paint, apply final overcoat... Start again!!!! Ooof! "Sometimes, it's hard, to be, a plumber" (Doo wah, do wah doooo)
