In this episode of our Vivaro van conversion series we install a solar panel and split charging kit which will help keep the leisure battery topped up whilst on the move. We then move on to the wiring, van insulation and add the laminate flooring in.
Join us as we convert a Vauxhall Vivaro SWB into a tiny home on wheels. We will be documenting the full build so make sure you subscribe and turn your notifications on!
P.S The build will be for sale at the end so prepare yourselves to become a van lifer!
Thanks a million for watching and see you soon!

I've been watching your van build videos, and really enjoying them. The only thing I find difficult about watching is that when the music comes on I have to hurry to turn it down. If you could keep the volume of the music consistent with the volume of the dialogue it would be much more pleasant.

Great content thanks, I'm just starting my conversion. Can I ask how did you finish off the flooring at the rear of the van? Is there a threshold available that would fit taking into account the raised height of the new floor? Keep up the good work.

Hi there, thanks for a great video! How are you wiring the cables to the battery? I see you don't have an inverter, do you charge you laptop in the van? Would be very grateful for response as this electric stuff is doing my head in!! Thanks :)
@ipodgooroo

With your wiring, was it only necessary to run the positive wire to each appliance (lights etc) when you were mapping out where the wires were going to and then taping in place?

12:34 No stagger? I didn't understand the logic of cutting the boards, they can all be different lengths, it's stronger that way.It should be like brickwork with the joins directly across from a full board.

What size screws have you been using for each part of the build?
@nicroams
@nicroams Год назад
Hey Dylan, unfortunately I can’t remember as this build was over 3 years ago now but typically we pick a size that goes through the one piece of wood and grabs the next piece by about 5-10mm depending on the wood. I recommend grabbing a selection of countersunk screws as you’ll probably use them all 🤗

What do you need solar for, or even a second batter and split charge system? I run my fridge only when I travel and in a year lose maybe 1/2 litre of milk, but save all that money and trouble. Plus I don't have to park in the sun which is a terrible thing to do in Europe. The USB/phone charging uses nothing and spent £60 on a lithium jump starter just in case and can help out another stranded traveller. Oh the Vivaro takes a larger battery too, which I fitted when I changed it. I hope you ground off the lugs in the roof structure or you lose 3cm in headroom? You also lost another few cm with that bulky flooring which is completely unecessary, my van is warm with only reflective sliver liner under the ply and a nice warm bit of carpet costing £10. When it gets dirty, which it hasn't in 4 years, I put a new bit in. My daughter did what you did in her Trafic and now cannot sit up straight without their heads touching the ceiling. Hope this helps others doing a Trafic/Vivaro converters.

I think it really depends on what look you're going for, I personally don't like the carpet look but each to their own. Like you said there are benefits of doing that but just not for me and the design intended. In regards to the head space, yes the vivaro etc are small so you need to ensure you build your benches and beds with that in mind. In this conversion you will be able to sit up without your head touching the ceiling. The solar and second battery are so the home space is completely separate to the van and to be able to go off grid. Everyone who lives in a van are after different things therefore I wouldn't expect anyone to copy this build if they prioritiae the extra inch and aren't fussed on design 😄. I live in a vivario full time (not this one) and I am completely happy with the cladded look, makes it much more homier and I couldn't imagine not having solar, split charger and separate battery as I rely on all those things for work. Solar is a bit shit right now because of winter but in the summer it was more than enough energy for what I needed.

I was wondering similarly, I've seen a lot of people recommending kingspan material being better suited to vans, possibly being better insulating too? And using a spray foam in the hard to reach bits, was curious if this the case to your knowledge and experience?

4:36 For goodness sake, connect the aux. battery AFTER the main fuses. NEVER before! Even if the technical knowledge is missing. Just apply some common sense! If the manufacturer use those large fuses. They probably have a good reason for that. ;-) Cheers
@AshleyJonesFR
@AshleyJonesFR 3 года назад
You can connect before fuses no problem if you fit an inline fuse going to the leisure battery.

I'm worried about the mounting of the solar panel and the way you've fitted your cable gland entry. And if your now offering custom builds do you have the right qualifications regarding gas and electric. Your opening yourself up to a lawsuit if something happens. If not employ a mobile engineer to install the gas and mains electrics as you should ideally supply installation certs.

@@nicroams hi thanks for getting back to me. I'm an AWS mobile caravan and motorhome service engineer. If you need any advice regarding any part of your installation I'll need more than happy to help. I'm based in North Wales if you're this way at all. I'm assuming you're down south.

you're better off not compressing it too when using adhesives like that as the adhesive relies on the bead to make a good contact and you can push it all out and not leave as much under it to bond. Run a bead around the edge after to neaten it up by all means but pushing it down isnt great.

OSB??? What happened to REAL 3/4" PLYWOOD? You're cutting way too many corners. This is a really CHEAP build.

Entire houses are made out of OSB (SIPS panels). It's a good material when used correctly.
