In preparation for insulation we decided to get the MaxxFan, Deometic Heki 2 roof hatch, rear view camera and extractor fan fitted. Was a lot of work for one day and was great to see such a change over such a short time.

You really need to use a timber frame ! and also you should of restrengthened the roof brace you cut through! There are so many things wrong with how you fitted these vents, all good if its for yourself and you are not passing it off as a professional van conversion. It does worry me that lots of people are watching and learning? You need to build / form a flat structure for your ceiling fan not bodge it with loads of filler. good to see your enjoying yourself!

Very entertaining mate, good luck with the build! Still watching this vid, so pls forgive me if you have already addressed either of these: 1, make sure you insert a tight fitting strip of timber into the void in the bisected roof support rib to prevent it squishing over time thereby loosening fixings! 2, you said you will eventually power the monitor and camera off the leisure battery, I would recommend against this as every time you have any issue regarding solar / batteries / inverter etc you will have to isolate the system, believe me, that is exactly when you will back into a bollard / shopping trolley / delinquent adolescent etc. Simple rule, if you use it whilst driving, use original power source.

A tip I have from working on yachts, something that I learned hard. When sealing things with sika, check to see if you need a special primer.Perspex and stainless steel in particular can leak really badly even with a perfect seal, it needs to be be actually stuck. Iso propranolol alcohol is really good for prepping.

Good job this van is GALVANISED, all those screws. When you park in some orientations, the MaxFan will cast a shadow on your solar panels at certain times of day, so you will need to park facing North.😱👍
@HughTube
@HughTube 4 года назад
based on the height of panels from the roof when fitted a shadow would only be cast at sunrise in the wrong orientation
@CarlJones14
@CarlJones14 4 года назад
@@HughTube or sunset. I think that is what I said. I think its best to do some driving when the sun goes up or down and always good to do driving before the evening so you get some charge before the evening. This a major design flaw with the Maxfan imho. I'd love a canoe rack on one side of the roof on my van. But its never going to happen because I don't want to have think about parking the right frigging way every time I park up. Everything is a compromise.👍

Hei, i love the big roof vent, thinking of doing the same on mine. Can you tell me if you have had any issues with wind noise while driving with this? I have heard some people have problems with it. is it forced ventilation model or not?
@sivelo5021
@sivelo5021 4 года назад
Aha, I was waiting to see whether you'd gone through the roof support. We've a XLWB Relay (obv same as the Boxer) and because it's the XLWB it has an extra roof support at the rear, right through the middle of where a Midi Heki would fit. What do you (or anyone else) think about taking a section of the roof support out?. The other supports aren't too far away so I'm hoping/thinking it won't weaken it that much?........

@sivelo5021

McNasty1340 cheers fella, I figured I’d need a surround for the roof light but yep a couple of extra supports won’t hurt I guess. Have you done something similar yourself?
@Randomviewer01

I fitted a heki 2 to my xlwb. Had to cut parts of the roof support bars, just enough to fit the skylight in, mine isnt going across the roof it goes down the length of it if that makes sense. Still enough of the roof support bars left to screw some more wood on if needed.

Yeah, here's a video of a bloke fitting the same to iveco with same issues, glue to ceiling and I used rivnuts into side roof parts to bolt brackets onto, brackets were recessed into bottom face of wooden support, kept it flush for panels. Sorry no pics.
@thomasmaes6620
@thomasmaes6620 3 года назад
How is it going? are you happy with the heki? I'm considering one for above my bed. Do you think the small one would be enough to stargaze or should I get a midi as well? Does the blackout screen completely block the light? I don't want to get any light on my face in the morning when sleeping haha. What about the noise? I'm deciding between 2 maxxfans or maxxfan/skylight combination. Sorry for the many questions and happy travels!
@HughTube
@HughTube 3 года назад
Hi Thomas I fitted a smaller midi heki to a transit custom and you could definitely stargaze but just obviously a smaller view. I haven't fit the blind yet as still need to do ceiling but will keep everyone updated. I would say they noise is pretty good through the heki for such a large area and there is a noticable difference even between closed and very slightly open. As I have no windows on the side a hatch is a must for me
@bexnut
@bexnut 2 года назад
Hi! Did you find your battens around the heki needed to be the same depth as the support rib you cut into so it was clamped evenly the whole way across? Did you just fill the troughs in the roof afterward with sikaflex or build it all up flush with butyl tape? Thanks

I've seen several of your videos over the years and I'm stunned that you are still advising people how to cut their van up like an amateur - cutting structural ribs and not battening for the Maxxfan. No masking when cutting. Using the wrong bond/sealant. Have you learned nothing over the years?

Hey thanks for sharing! I got the heki 3 hatch to mount on my promaster recently, still planning how to make it work. Does the roof of the van in your video have a slight curve like the promasters do? how did you get the heki to mount flat? and how did you fill in the gaps of the roof ribs? appreciate any info you can share!
@HughTube
@HughTube 3 года назад
The roof for me was pretty much flat a very small amount of arching. To fill the troughs I used a mastic sealing strip and built up a few layers, then used sikaflex 522 to seal the hatch to the van

@HughTube
@HughTube 4 года назад
really plan out the van on cad software or paper before and try to give everything a multi function. If there is anything being fit to the roof try to keep it as low profile as possible so that you can still squeeze under some height restrictions for outdoor car parks

At the back of the van there are two support ribs very near to each other and as I didn't cut through the whole rib it hasn't negatively effected the roof integrity.

@@HughTube I actually just ordered mine from there also. Sorry to ask not on the correct RU-vid vid, but why did you go for the truma combi diesel and not gas? Ive also been looking at the Imass water heater. I want to use my van for trips to the snow as well as summer and I’ve read gas isn’t great at altitude. Is that the reason? I’m worried that the truma repair might be a bit of a headache though
