One of the daughters of Gerald and Nest is my ancestor. Angharad, who was married to William de Barry, who is my direct paternal ancestor (hence the profile picture). It was a pleasant surprise to see Gerald's and Nest's names on a random video suggestion in my feed.

Im so proud to be a Fitzgerald...my grandfather was born in Ireland in 1892 and came to Australia at a young age,he fought in two world wars for Australia, WW1 and WW2, he never told many people of his past so sadly we never found out where he was born,and sadly he passed away before i was born, you are my hero Grandad.....

Brilliant video! Some facts that of course you might not have had time for: Gerald FitzGerald, the 11th Earl, is known as the "wizard earl." He was exiled from Ireland for a time and travelled as far as Libya and fought with the Knights of St. John and the Knights of Rhodes. His epithet was from his interest in alchemy. It is said his ghost returns "on the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year" in Kilkea Castle. He is also an ancestor (through his granddaughter) of the Digby family, who produced Jane Digby, a scandalous adventurer in the 19th century who had lovers and husbands in Bavaria, Greece, and eventually married an Arab Sheikh in Ottoman Syria.

My grandmother’s family is the Fitzgeralds from Ireland. She married my grandfather, Fred Carroll from the O’carroll clan. A very powerful warrior clan of Ireland. They now live in Canada.

Joan FitzGerald (daughter of John FitzGerald 1st. Earl of Kildare and Blanche de la Roche) is my 24th great-grandmother through my 15th great grandmother Mary Boleyn.

You could have also chosen Brian Boru, a native Gaelic king who actually did unify Ireland as a single kingdom under his rule (albeit briefly for 12 years) and his progeny the O'Briens. During Brian's reign, the title of High King actually had real meaning as all of the underkings had pledged fealty to him by 1002. It was only in 1014, during a joint Norse-Leinster rebellion, had anyone opposed his rule. Clontarf was a pyrrhic victory for the Irish. They had crushed the rebellion and broken Viking power in Ireland yet, their unifying leader was dead. Had Brian not been killed at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, Ireland would have probably developed into a feudal Kingdom similar to that of France or Scotland. Sadly, with Brian's death came the old disunification and infighting that he attempted to quell which made it simple for the Normans to conquer the island.

My Grandmother was a FitzGerald. She always used to make a point of the large G in the name, and talked about spending time at Glin Castle during her youth. I had no idea how prominent this family was!!! Brilliant video, and so nice to see so many other comments from this lineage.

I am a FitzGerald & my great great uncle was Edward, my brother is Gerald FitzGerald. I knew there was a Strongbow connection but this history of yours is wonderful.

Fantastic research. Came to the US in the 80s from Ireland and married a Fitzgerald. Still married to the lass. She's having a not-so-great day today but after watching your timeline I just told her that she's my Mona Lisa.

You should do the O'Neils and the O'Connors as well, there the two most dominant dynasties in Irish history, and are actually Celtic/Gaelic families instead of Norman.

My grandmothers maiden name is Fitzgerald and she has the Fitzgerald coat of arms in her house, we’ve been told that the Fitzgerald’s were our ancestors, her grandparents were also from Ireland

While I have no Fitzgerald blood that I'm aware of. My paternal ancestors the O'Dempseys were one of the only few families to resist Strongbow and eventually became the Viscounts of Clanmalier under the Stuarts.

The union between lreland and britain broke in 1922 (Anglo-Irish Treaty) when the 26 counties became the Irish free State. Ireland became a republic all but name in 1937 (executive power act) when the office of the president was formed as well as controlling it own international policy. My mother’s maiden name was FitzGerald, and her branch of the family came to Canada (early 1800s?) from Turlough, County Mayo. No grand earl’s palaces for them, although they must fit into the family tree somewhere. Our family has had lots of Maurices, Desmonds, and Edwards, so the names are consistent. I think I have a family tree done by a great-aunt, so will see if I can marry up the two charts 🇨🇮🇨🇦

I am a descendent of Otho...But the Pedegree that you referred to was from and invented flight of fancy from the Earls of Kildair who gave an exotic Ancestry. Genealogists that do not consider the descent from Tuscany nobility to be real at all. Of course nobody’s going to read this comment but I put it out there anyway

I only found out all this when researching my maternal lineage and who they are descended from which led me to it. Her' s goes all over the place and not just Irish it also leads to a lot more besides that figure even more prominent in history like Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Stewart's, Plantagenent' s, Queen Victoria, the Huns, the Yellow Emperor of China, the Xiongnu who were also a part of the Huns and many others. A lot of royal families since they are all related, aristocrats, Vikings, Native Americans etc some famous and some infamous. I never realized I had that much Irish in my heritage I knew there was some but not nearly to that extent and I have yet to do my father's lineage and descent and ancestry. I know he has Queen Victoria and a lot of Scottish and German like the Stewart's at the very least it will be interesting to find out more about.

The Fitzgeralds of Desmond should not have fought the Butlers plus allied clans at Affane in 1565 and the Fitzmaurice plus allied clans at Lixnaw in 1568 and then wanting to fight the English ending badly at Glenageenty.

You should do a family tree 🌲 of the O’Brian dynasty. It’s first member was the one Irish ☘️ king who unified the whole of Ireland for the first time, brief as it was. His descendants continued to rule in Munster, and later Thomond for over 500 years and today they are the Barons of Inchiquin in County Clare

According to Ancestry DNA i am a descendant of the Kildare FitzGeralds, says that Sir Gerald II FitzGerald the 11th Earl of Kildare is my 20th Great Grandfather. He and Lady Browne had a daughter named Mary who married a Nugent, then they had a daughter named Margaret who married an O'Brien. I am learning so many new things about my family history, thank you !

This was great and I wish you would do more Irish dynasties! My family name can be traced back to Norman-Gaelic times (back to 1172 and Gilbert MacOisdealbhaigh, a junior branch of Jocelyn Nangle, who's senior branch, Nagle, held the title Baron of Navan for a few centuries) and there is still a barony in County Mayo named after our line.

The Normans got very far in Europe. I heard a story about a Irish soldier in the British Army billeted to a small Sicilian town in WW2.The locals were reserved until they found out his name was Fitzgerald.Turns out the town was settled by Norman knights in the 11 century.Small world.

This is new info for me. I have traced my family tree back to the early 1800's in Antrim and Armagh Counties in Ulster (now Northern Ireland).

Leinster house is the house of the parliament (the oireachtas) of the republic and the prime minister (Taoiseach). The president (Uachtarán) works and lives at Áras an Uachtaráin in the Phoenix park. The president is the head of state he is the equivalent of the queen in the UK but he is elected. Great video!

I actually have 6 Fitzgerald relatives that came from Ireland in the late 1800's. My great great grandparents were 2 of them!

My Great grandmother was Catherine Fitzgerald of County Cork. She was born in 1867. Don't know when her and her father, Thomas sailed to America? Married my Great grandfather in 1890 in New Hampshire.

Brilliant family tree but Nest had a daughter who had another leader of the conquest named Milo de Cogan. Her kids and grandkids basically invaded Ireland with a few lads and and a cuddle.

I'm a FitzGerald, whose family emigrated to Newfoundland prob sometime in the 1750s from Munster .. I think I might descend from the Desmond line . Learned recently that piracy was prominent there in the 17th century.

1:12 Brian Ború did unite Ireland with him as the undisputed High-King around 1011AD but thjs fell apart quiet quickly. He died putting down a viking invasion in 1014 and Ireland went back to being separated i to several differnt kingdoms with the title as High-King being once again symbolic. Althought I will mention the Irish kingdoms were much closer political (as well as culturally tbf) than the Anglo-Saxons before unification as well as wales and other nations. All Irish kingdoms used the exact same system of laws which didn't even vary at all between kingdoms. The Irish "Brehon-Laws" they were called. For most of Irish history the "Tailteann Games" were held traditionally on a set date where all Irish kingdoms came together to lay out the laws for the next few years as well as the sports and competitions each kingdom competed in. Althought there were parge periods throughout Irish history where the Tailteann Games didn't take place and it often took one of the "stronger" High-Kings to bring back the tradition. For example Ruadairí Ua Conchobair.

The Norseman is misleading…many of the Wales families were from Flanders..And they fought in the battle Hastings and were given lands in wales . When they started running out of lands to pass on they went to Ireland with strongbow and were given lands in Ireland

The offices of the President would be in Áras an Uachtaráin in Phoenix Park. Pretty sure Leinster house just holds an Dáil (Parliament) of the two houses, an Oireachtas (lower house) & an Seanad (upper house).

Gerald FitzGerald the 8th Earl of Kildare was my 18th great grandfather through the Hennessy (Cognac) line of my family. My 17th great grandfather was hung with Silken after the Kildare rebellion.

Yes I do. The story of the Geraldine' s started from being the Dukes of Florence and 3 sons all brothers went to Ireland as mercenaries in the pay of the English and established at least 8 or 9 prominent lineages in Ireland that share their original descent from them and had other branches in other countries that eventually died out. They kept in contact through the catholic priesthood which documented them and their relatives in different countries and branches for at least 500 years and are referred to as the Geraldines. They had the Fitzgerald's the Carew' s and many other families that became prominent over time and some people did not know or believe they were related until someone had talked with a priest who verified the documentation and connection. They had branches in England, France, Italy, Poland, and Ireland. For Mona Lisa the painting in Italian is known as La Giaconda for her husband's family and he was a prominent silk merchant who commissioned her portrait to be painted by Leonardo da vinci and she was the sister of the 3 brothers Tomasso, Walter, and Maurice Gherardini who founded the lineages that are considered the most prominent and Irish in and of Ireland.

Doing my maternal grandmother's family tree, I discovered we are not only descended from the FitzGeralds, but also the MacCarthy Reagh dynasty as well as the O'Sullivan Bere line. And I just thought we were random immigrants 😁

My great grandmother was a Fitzgerald from Ireland! Probably not of the same family but it would be cool if it were. I will have to check with one of my aunts who has the family tree written down somewhere.

As far as I can tell, when you go back enough the interconnections between families become innumerable...It looks like a snakeball...everybody related to everybody...Especially in Ireland... Lady Emily Lennox is a cousin in our family tree. Her mother Sara nee Cadogan was neice of our very great grandma Penelope nee Cadogan Prendergast...Everybody related ... p.s I thought the Gerhardini Connection was some rewrite of history...Makes a good story...I've also seen Raymond Le Gros FitzGerald indicated as having two sons...It's all fuzzy I guess...and likely there was plenty of messing around so who knows

Hey I know this will be so controversial, but can you make who will be the caliph today? I did a lot of searching, but I only can find the ottoman one, but according to actual caliphate rules the caliph must be from quraysh tribe, so i didn't consider the ottoman one as he is a Turk, anyway you're obviously ten times better than me in this, so I'd like to see what you can find, I'd totally understand it tho if you want to avoid controversy and not want to talk about a sensitive subject.

My last name is Jerrell, and we are descendants of the FitzGerald’s. I was able to follow our line back to Ireland, and this video answered some of my questions. Some of the children of the FitzGerald’s that came to America changed the spelling to different variations, Jerrell/Gerald/Jarrell, etc., still some questions as to why, some think to not sound too Irish, which is ironic, as the FitzGerald’s were “more irish than the Irish themselves”.

Great video! It was interesting to learn about the Fitzgerald history. I have both Fitzgeralds and Kennedys in my family tree. My dad's sisters have said they thought we were related to the Kennedys (JFK's family) which I haven't been able to confirm. My paternal great grandmother Nora Fitzgerald was born in Meath, Ireland and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts and then Chicago. Nora's father's name was Michael J. Fitzgerald born in Meath, Ireland. Nora Fitzgerald married John Joseph Dowd born in County Kerry Ireland whose mother's maiden name was Mary Kennedy born in Ireland.

Decendent of Maurice Fitzgerald, 1st Earl of Desmond also the 8th Earl...my ancestor James Adair (Fitzgerald de Adair) came to Georgia in the 1700's and settled with the Cherokee. He wrote a book about the Cherokee & Native tribes that is now in the Library of Congress's archives, claiming he believed they were one of the " lost tribes of Israel. Funny. Adairsville, Georgia & Adair County, Oklahoma named for his son, John, Adair. Thanks for the history.

My late great grandfather is a Gerald FitzGerald. We’re from Philadelphia. He worked on the railroad after the war and bought a house in Levittown. He was married to my great grandmother, Veronica, for decades until he passed. They had seven children. I love my family very much. My mother has our genealogy mapped out somewhere and tells me it’s very interesting. I’m trying to learn. I still have to look at my dad’s side! Surprisingly, dna hasn’t helped - it just tells me who all of our third, fourth, fifth cousins are who I already know... we keep in touch I guess lol (another family reunion anyone?)

Gherard de Windsor is my paternal 20th great-grandfather . Is an honor to be connected to this lineage. His son Maurice FitzGerald had a son named Walter Fitzmaurice de Whyte. And that's where the surnames change to whyte/white. Still connected by blood though haha!

Fabulous work here. I have researched a few of these. to see their connection was wonderful. I've been researching an A.I.Geraldy granted a 1/2 lot beside my Martin ancestor 1749 Halifax so discovered the Italian connection. He disappeared from the records. I have heard there is a connection between Martins and Fitzgerald in Ireland. Martin YDNA results were Maxwell and Ramsey Borders and some Italian. No Irish. Thanks more food for thought.

I checked my tree and I do indeed have a couple dangling FitzGeralds waiting to be researched. Probably the easiest to track back might be Maurice FitzGerald 1238 - 1283 3rd Lord of of Offlay. His wife was Maud de Pendergrast 1242 - ? Via a daughter named JulieAne FitzGerald born about 1263 in Dublin d. 1300 in Thomond, Connaught. Clare, Ireland and she marries in the de Clare family (Thomas de Clare 1245 - 1287).
