I got excited for another Twilight Zone review! I haven't seen this one in so long. As a kid, it validated my thoughts on EVERYthing having a conscious, even a stapler. Man, the Twilight Zone really set the stage for so many films and shows it's crazy reflecting on it all. Indian in the Cupboard was my jam!

rainbowFRIGHT, always good to hear from you. As a kid I had such an imagination so I can relate. We made out own little worlds back then. I was surprised how many other movies and tv shows used the idea of toys coming to life. Initially all I could think of was Toy Story, then as I researched I was like, ooooh yeah, Rudolph, Indian & the Cupboard...etc...so many. Anyway, thank you for watching, be well.. : )

The story is existentialist in the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre. We human beings find ourselves on the Earth by accident. There is no meaning in life - just a series of accidents without meaning. We don't remember anything before we were born, and we have no clues as to what happens after death. "We're here because we're here, because we're here...because...we're...here!"

As I always say, cause I am super redundant, I always love the ones with heavy mystery elements. And this one was particularly good because the twist was so unexpected. Nowadays, they probably would have been dead the whole time. Hollywood never seems to tire of that cliché. The Toy Story analogy is apt indeed. I thought that same thing. Another great analysis, good sir.

Hey Rob, good to hear from you man. You are right, that probably would be the modern Hollywood way to go. When I was about 12, I thought I’d seen every Twilight Zone episode, when one night, they played this one at about midnight when I had a bad fever. This episode scared the shit out of me. I couldn’t figure it out until the very end. Then, it made me emotional because it made me think of all the toys I’d gotten at the church yard sale over the years, thinking about if they actually had personalities, how they’d have felt being abandoned and then given a new home.

Hey Nick, I had a similar experience with The Jungle. I wasn't feeling very well and fell asleep watching that only to be woken up by the horrifying conclusion. @@FeverDreamlandTheater not at all. I love this episode especially as I’m a toy collector (not hardcore I only collect some choice toys from my childhood and a few modern things), so I suppose I get a bit emotional thinking about my memories connecting to my toys. My mom got me almost the entire Masters of the Universe toy mine on clearance, and as we were extremely poor, and so they were my favorite toys for years. I never got kids who’d get rid of one action figures for the latest new thing,

This is an amazing episode, built around a darn simple scenario, yet with the best of performances, and as tense and suspenseful as the viewer can expect. And like The After Hours, we deal with humanoid dolls shaking any insights to reality that we have, and that's pure Twilight Zone.

Like any Twilight Zone episode, this one raises so many questions and when they're finally answered, it feels so shocking yet satisfying. If I were in a situation trapped with strangers not knowing where I am, I would freak out and panic too. The twist ending was just absolutely brilliant. It's like some twisted version of Toy Story. There's also the philosophy of nihilism, existentialism and purpose that makes us think. Like we're trapped in a meaningless life with no sense of real purpose. As humans ourselves, we're the play things of gods, higher powers or the universe.

Hey MarvelandDC, ha ha, I went down the rabbit-hole reading up on things I haven't read about since college. Excellent analysis as always, sir. This episode is a personal favorite of mine and I still remember the first time I saw it years ago on one of the New Years marathons. I loved it not just because of its intriguing and mysterious plot, the complete randomness of it, and the bittersweet ending, but also because, like you mentioned, it really makes you think. Its ability to serve as a character study for how different people react in a crisis is exquisite, a recurring theme in Twilight Zone, but this is taken to more extremes because of the unique personalities involved here. I also appreciate that even though the ending shouldn't necessarily be satisfying, it very much is because it's earned based on the journey we take. Anticipating your next review!

Good review! I like that you added the misfit toys reference from Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, because the toys from the island of misfit toys also want to leave that place, a place of no purpose or meaning. I think that meaning is a big thing in this episode. I wonder what the ending means in relation to the characters. Yes we get the twist, they were toys all along, but now that they know, what does it mean to them? Do they understand that they are toys? The toys from Toys story and Rudolph know that they are toys and want to be useful to children. In this twilight zone episode we are to speculate what the repercussions are to these 5 characters. We are not told or shown what the characters gain from their journey. We just see them in a pile with sad tearful faces. And their faces don't look realistic, they've turned to mannequins or dolls. I wonder if in their search of meaning they actually lost something else.

Coming late to the party as usual, but I must mention ( hope I'm not repeating someone else) I like how Rod and the author let the ballerina come the closest to the right answer- they WERE the unloved. The hobo had the other part of the equation- they were in limbo, ... until Christmas. Which unless they had no frame of reference for the current cultural era, and they do have some inherent knowledge, else they wouldn't be able to speculate or even speak in the first place, they now know they are toys, or at least playthings, waiting to be given away to some child, specifically the girls' orphanage. Hopefully, the hobo, bagpiper and the major will be loved, but Spoilers for those who passed on Toy Story 4 .. .. .. .. Little girls like different toys from little boys, and the more masculine toys especially in that era, might not have been enjoyed by little girls. But still, if you have little else, you might be grateful for anything you receive, even a cast off 'boy's toy' . And thanks for including a good shot showing the barrel long enough to read the name of the orphanage and that it was for girls aged 6(?) to 12. I never noticed read the barrel well enough the first time, so I didn't realize it was a girl's orphanage, which makes the oddity of throwing a ballerina into the mix make even more sense, while the others are even more clearly castoffs by people clearing out toy chests of the dolls least played with, they are all in too good a shape, even the hobo and the others still have their "attachments", the sword for the major, the umbrella for the clown, and the bagpipes for the piper. They were unloved or kept as keepsakes and never played with. If the major and the others wake up before distribution, or if they awake when the next donation comes crashing down (I hope there will be more, it scares me the barrel is so empty during the shopping season) if the major retains his memory of the sojourn outside the barrel, he may have seen and heard enough to put 2 + 2 together. And the poor ballerina will know that she will soon be in her new home, with a girl who will love her.

This is a decent episode, but for me it loses something with multiple viewings. The best part for me is the opening ten minutes or so, when it's just the back and forth between the major and the clown. Although all the cast members were adequate or better in their roles, but while William Windom's The Major is the central character, for me the best thespian turn was by far Murray Matheson as The Clown, and he usually steals every scene in which he's featured.. Of course, it doesn't hurt that his his character has the best absurdist lines, which he delivers with considerable gusto: *The Clown:* [of the Major] Very active chap. Quite a function. Compulsive worker. *The Major:* [still tapping the wall] You a big-time psychologist, huh? *The Clown:* I'm a clown. Which is neither here, there, nor anyplace. I could be a certified public accountant, a financier, a left-handed pitcher who throws only curves. What difference does it make? [singing to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne" while the Major pounds the wall] *The Clown:* We're here, because we're here, because we're here... [breaks off as the Major turns to stare at him, then brokenly starts up again as he resumes hammering] *The Clown:* Because - we're - here. www.imdb.com/title/tt0734569/quotes?ref_=tt_ql_sm It's been speculated that the 1997 horror movie _Cube_ was to some extent inspired by this episode. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Esjc0rPj3K4.html Because of Rod's outro, I consider "Five Characters In Search Of An Exit" more as dark fantasy than out and out horror. 4 out of 5 wacky existential flower pot clown hats!
@FeverDreamlandTheater
@FeverDreamlandTheater 2 года назад
Oh man, when I did this review I wasn't joking, it did break my brain in a sense. I found myself rethinking the ideas and themes throughout. Despite the fact that the ending/twist was explicit, I still felt there was more to it. The Clown as you noted, spouted all of these wonderful absurdist lines. "We're here, because we're here, because we're here..." But I couldn't help but think there had to be a deeper meaning to it all. I guess that's why I found myself identifying with the Major. Seeking deeper meaning flies in the face of absurdism as it was represented by the clown so maybe I just subscribe more to essentialism? In any case, thanks for watching Galantski, loved the trivia about Cube and I tend to agree, this one can be classified as a dark fantasy as well. Be well!
@Galantski
@Galantski 2 года назад
@Fever Dreamland Theater I agree about the Major's importance--he's even able to get the Clown motivated!😄 You say you identify with the Major because of the search for a deeper meaning. Ah, but that's the problem: _is_ there a deeper meaning? And is he the one to look for an answer to that question? I'd have to say no. While it's true he has the best answers to their present predicament, he's going strictly on empirical evidence--it doesn't go beyond that, but then it doesn't need to--finding a way to get out of the cylinder is all that should occupy them at the moment.. I think the deepest thinker amongst the characters--when he's not acting a fool is the Clown; not that his ideas are always sound ones, but at least he's the only one who seems to be looking beyond the obvious. At one point he muses about first the light atop their confinement (the sky? an artificial light? an illuminated microscope? on a space ship? another planet? etc.) this way about their predicament and the place (each other's dreams? an illusion? limbo? etc.), before exclaiming : "You call it, you can have it.: That's the one thing we have an abundance of: _possibilities."_ But, of course, his "deep thinking" leads nowhere. But so does the realism of the Major, because in they're simply five dolls who aren't even aware of that basic fact. I wondered about alternate interpretations, but the one that seemed to present itself I had to discard immediately, and that was that of a socioeconomic message. They don't easily break down that way. If the Major is meant to be defending the ruling elite along with the piper, and the hobo at the other end of the class system (somehow I don't think he'd be as menacing as the shabby scarecrow of a man who bedeviled Nan Adams). I suppose we see the Clown (as a Jester) and the Ballerina as entertainers in a royal court, but the analogy is limited. I want to thank you, Anthony, for forcing me to do a word search for essentialism. I've been racking my memory to recall if that system was mentioned in philosophy class. I'd like you to explain it as used in this episode. To close, I'm going to go off on a brief tangent about how disturbing clowns are. We often hear about how no one had issues with clowns before John Wayne Gacy ruined the image forever. Although he brought about explicit linkage of clowns with evil, there has always been something unsettling about them: They fit in that peripheral part of consciousness known as "uncanny valley", along with mimes, dolls, puppets, ventriloquist dummies, androids, etc., as something _posing_ as human. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ahTpbFwQxrE.html Here's a video of a woman named Kris in therapy to overcome her deathly fear of clowns -- ._coulrophobia ._ I find it unintentionally funny. I've even thought of a _TZ_ spoof. Kris get's tossed into the cylinder alone with the Clown. My title: "One Character with Stuffed Toy Making Her Own Quick Exit". (Imagine the outline of Wile E. Coyote as he crashed through sheer rock, and that's how I envision Kris trying to escape confinement with the Clown.) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1h3Dh5QAD7w.html Stay safe, be well, and beware the clown under your bed. 🤡

Quality review, Anthony, as usual. I thought the actor playing the clown was outstanding (thought: Have I seen a better clown? Not sure I have.). Even before you made the Toy Story connection I was thinking along the same lines. Namely, how far back does the plot device of toys with their own secret lives go? My wife likes this one a little more than I, but I'm a hard grader, so yeah, probably 3 or 3.5 for me. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. You're sure good at it.

Hmmm… we’re the filmmakers of Toy Story influenced by this?
@FeverDreamlandTheater
@FeverDreamlandTheater 2 года назад
Hey wassup David, I was curious about that too. I believe Toy Story evolved from one of Pixar's 1988 shorts called 'Tin Toy'. The general idea itself though about toys had been seen in other movies going back even further. Thanks for watching! Have a good weekend!

Great analysis, btw are you ever going to review the episode a nice place to visit? it's my favorite, the only thing I don't like about it is it's also Donald trump's favorite episode, which is strange because you'd think if he had a favorite twilight zone episode it would be the one where everyone is under the tyrannical rule of a spoiled child..
