In high school I had a friend whose dad buried dozens of coffee cans filled with cash on their land. They owned a ranch. I helped him dig up a few. I won’t comment on what we did with the cash. So, yeah. The explanation of the buried Roman coins might be really, really stupid instead of mysterious and cool.

I've had the treasure seeking bug after living in the Florida keys for 20 years and searching for shipwrecks. I actually went out and searched/ marked submerged or derelict vessels after hurricane Irma. some guy walked past a dead snail in the sun and saw that the slime oozing out of it had changed purple. this person was able to do some basic critical thinking and smashed another snail and placed it in the sun, getting the same result. centuries of trial and error ironed out the kinks, and history was left with a profitable method of producing a rare color of pigment. fascinating, yes, but also perfectly reasonable.

With the pirate treasure, I gotta take a closer look at that, since I lived in Middletown RI, for about a year, years before this finding happened. That said, I doubt it was found on a farm, unless it is a fish farm, or a spot in someone's backyard where they grow some crops for personal consumption. Middletown is one of three towns on a rather small island, inside of the bay that nearly divides the state in half.

In ancient Egypt a time came when non royals were allowed to wear purple, perhaps others were allowed in Israel or the wearer being a foreign visitor? A lot of conclusions based on little evidence with this find i believe.

Nit: Colonial country rarely literally steal things. It is usually a combination of robbery, plunder, scam, unequal trade and spoil of war. And depending on the exact nature, that might affect how they should be treated. For starters, let's consider scam and unequal trade. The difference here, IMO, is whether or not the terms of an exchange is carried out. If it isn't, it's a scam. If it is, then it's unequal trade. Here I mean stuff like shiny glass for gold. IMO, scam should be treated the same as "stolen" and profit reverted. But unequal trade, by our standard, is still fair trade in the eye of the supposed victim. As such, I do believe "unequal trade" should be upheld, as they are only unequal in our eyes. Robbery and plunder should also be reverted like "stolen." This then leads to the question of, what is the difference between plunder versus spoil of war? For the most part, I'd say by how the battle, if any, started and how it progressed. For the most extreme examples, attack on a pure civilian settlement for no cause is simple plunder. On the other end, if the natives attacked first and the colonials won, counter attacked and won again, that is most likely spoil of war. The stuff in the middle would be more murky. Things would be simpler if there were formal declaration of war but as the colonials rarely thought the natives as actual nations, that's rarely if ever done. So it will probably go roughly by the degree of military involvement. And with that, we come to the most difficult part of this, what do we do with spoil of war. A lot of people advocate for those too to be reverted as that would be the "right" thing to do, and intuitively, this is how I *feel* as well. But this does not pass intellectual validation in terms of standardization of practice. There are a lot of things that were the spoil of war, including many nations and domain thereof. We aren't seeking for all of those to be returned, so why these specifically? It feels like the decision is more based on whether it is easy and feels right than whether it is right. And... I can't agree with such hypocritical practices. Besides that, the modern view on spoil of war is very... modern. For the longest time, it is was accepted as a normal course of action. In fact, in many ways it is still practiced as such. It's just that today, instead of direct plunder of valuables, it is often more in the form of political influence. Now, in the event of high profile artifact where we know which form of "transaction" took place, we can act accordingly. But barring that, given all of the above, I would only advocate for return of about 70% of the item, favoring those with higher culture value over monetary value. So statues, tablets and other artifacts etc over simple gold.

That's how they came up with "Before Christ." Then they had everyone in the Roman Empire bring in all their coins so they could be re-stamped with the correct date. 1:40 this is OUTSTANDINGLY good condition for coins like these, much less for the state of relics of this age PERIOD. I had never seen these pictures; I heard about the find (majored in Humanities with a focus in ancient Roman literature) but never saw these pictures. I have a different career path now, but I still love all things Roman & Greco-Roman. These coins.. it looks like they were plucked out of time. This condition is similar to what an average person would have used at the time. Outstanding.

>Why was the jug burried. This was like around the late bronze age collapse. Shit was utter chaos during that time constant war/attacks. Throwing coins in a jug and digging a shallow hideyhole hastily makes perfect sense.

When you find something buried in the ground neatly it's a pretty good guess it was a bank of sorts, where someone hid something valuable because others wanted to take it.

or it's a fake vid. Actually during the colonial period German settlers would bury 4 little jars with a few coins inside in the four cardinal directions around the home thinking this brings good fortune. AND during construction of their home, over the main doorway, in the masonry, they would also conceal a small jar with coins for the same reason.

Suggestion for a video. There's a guy in Canada who has been excavating his basement with miniature remote control earth moving equipment for the last 17 years or so, he has his own RU-vid channel. It's worth a look, I stumbled across it when I was researching excavators. The guy has major dedication. His channel is called LilGiantsConstrCo.

Treasure Hunters just found a shipwreck in Lake Michigan near Manistee (?) that they believe is full of gold coins, and even more interesting, many barrels of 150yo whiskey.

Why would a purple dyed piece of cloth be proof of David or Solomon existing? Surely nobody disputes the fact that kings existed 3k years ago? There's nothing to directly connect the cloth to any particular king or ruler.
