Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is gorgeous and we cherish our connection to the water. How did our city get the Inner Harbor and later Harborplace? Join us today as we start the story back in the 1730s. Thanks for watching and see you next week with another Five Minute Histories video.
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and RU-vid channel.

My first “real job” was at Mundo Latino in the Light St Pavillion. I’m so glad to have had that experience. The thought of private residences being built there makes me so very sad. This area needs to be kept public and open not blocked off by condos with great views of what used to belong to everyone.

This presentation reminded me that planning for the 70's and 80's changes to the Inner Harbor were thought through over time (although I know some felt at the time even those changes were too fast). But development through the years has mostly maintained a sense of place. I think so many planners and architects are disappointed with the current proposal because it looks like design ideas were quickly thrown together and for the most part don't seem to represent what makes this location so special.

I loved Harborplace and would go often back in the 70s and 80s. It was one of those icons that one would never think would deteriorate. Yet, my heart broke when I saw that it has followed the lead of many "dead malls" and is now a "remember when" location for many, largely due to greedy investors and property management firms that were clueless in how to manage a venue like this, thus running it into the ground. I think that a Baltimore based development firm should take it over and with the collaboration of the historical and resident groups in Baltimore restore it to its original purpose with local eateries and stores that made it a prime tourist attraction. Since they knew the original vision, the development should be relatively easy, provided they don't charge exorbitant rent prices for vendors like most dead mall owners did.

Having been born in Baltimore back in 1950, I remember when the inner harbor area was piers and old warehouses, with a sprinkling of homeless people. We used to love going to Connelly's and Phillip's seafood restaurants. When the B&O RR was still operating from Mount Clare to President St. Stations via Pratt St., the crews used to stop the engine in front of Connelly's to go in and have dinner.

1. I love the motto "Connecting the City to the Sea." We all need to keep that in mind as we go forward. 2. The last time I was in the harbor was a few months ago. I had lunch at Fogo de Chao. Johns, you are a wealth of knowledge and a treasure to Baltimore City.

talking about moving low income families there just means crime so yeah no ill pass the city has been plagued with crime and talking about giving this and that to people based on skin color. So they steal my tax money but dont fix potholes. Yeah no thanks I won't spend a dime.

I was born and raised in PG county and always considered myself a Washingtonian. But I moved to Laurel 37 years ago and started working more in the Baltimore environs. Most of my work(I put on metal roofs) is still in NW DC, but I've done some pretty neat projects in Baltimore. I take pride in my Maryland heritage even though my family is all from VA. Your series has taught me so much about Baltimore. Thanks.

I moved to Baltimore a couple of years ago from a city with great connection to the sea, and I always thought Inner Harbor as the place in town with most potential. IMHO, the whole marketplace area (or at least most of it) should be torn down to make room for bigger open spaces. It's already bad enough that we have that hideous WTC building by the water completely cutting the flow of people in that area... Just imagine that beautiful park by Fed Hill all around the harbor...

Yes! I saw that myself while serving and felt a nostalgia even though never having experienced the fairs. A re-enactment would be awesome.

I worked in the inner harbor in the 80’s & 90’s. The good people of Baltimore got me through College and to my first full time job and for that, I will always be grateful.

I am not so much concerned with the commercial amenities the new development will bring as having welcoming and beautifully accessible public spaces. Johns is right. Being near the water was the "special sauce" for me.

I was last there in 2002. As I commented in another video (The Baltimore Cemetery) , I have a family connection to the inner harbor. My 2d Great Grandfather owned a ship joining company (Clarke & Co.) at the foot of Henry St, the location of the present day park just behind you in the video.

@@baltimoreheritage1006 Sorry I did get a chance to reply before now. I only recently discovered your 5 minute and have been working my way backward through them. I have enjoyed them very much, thank you. Some of the information will be helpful when write the Clarke Family narrative. Yes it is cool, I'm very proud of my Baltimore and Maryland heritage. I have been doing family research for many years. On my father's side we go back to at least around 1720 mostly PG County. However I believe they may even go back to the 1640s. The Baltimore City roots where planted in the 1840s. Some of them came up from King & Queen County VA. King & Queen County was a major trading partner with that area with Fright and passenger service to and from Baltimore. Maybe a future subject, Baltimore boat that carried fright and passages up and down the bay. Through My Family I'm connected to Baltimore Ship Building, the Baltimore And Ohio Telegraph (owned By the B&O RR), The Great Baltimore fire, Ship Building at Sparrows Point in WW I as well and many other events. I am a Retired US Navy Sailor and have not lived in Maryland for 34 years, but I still have a love for Maryland.

I miss old Baltimore! I watched the Inner Harbor get constructed from the windows of the News American building. It caused a lot of traffic for their delivery drivers 😂

I remember when the B&O RR would deliver boxcar loads of newsprint paper to the rear of the News-American building via their Pratt St. trackage.

Harbor could be a beautiful place. A museum, a giant ferris wheel, restaurants, wedding venue, bars, hotels ect. Make it like Annapolis with mixing retail and restaurants with old history and Baltimore traditional aspects.

So the parking lots worked because they became public space for fairs and other events, not because they provided parking. There’s a lesson there.

Baltimore has recovered from fires and other natural disasters, emerging stronger than ever. Unfortunately, Harbor Place succumbed to crime and a negative socio-economic factor in the city. I myself, a Baltimore native of 67 years, was accosted and beat by a squeegee kid in 2020; tourists will not come here because of the real issue of crime. The mayor and city council seem unable, or unwilling, to do anything, and so the once-beautiful Harbor Place (Pratt St. and Light St. pavilions) have decayed into the ghetto landscape, and it is sad. And this crime problem will not magically go away by tearing these structures down. I travel a lot, and whenever someone asks about Baltimore, MD, I simply say that whatever bad things you hear about Baltimore are too kind.
