The bit about your dad sharing your experience really resonated with me. I was raised by my grandparents. My grandpa was always super enthusiastic to take me out fishing. I found fishing to be somewhat boring. But over the years, I heard more and more stories from my grandpa relating to fishing. For context my grandpa had a pretty rough childhood. His dad (my great grandpa) beat him. However, my grandpa always lit up while reveling in the stories about fishing with his dad. He said that the only time he ever saw his dad laughing and having fun was while they were fishing together. Although I found fishing to be somewhat boring, it made me all the more appreciative to go fishing with my grandpa knowing how much it meant to him. I would give anything to go fishing with him one more time.

Oh man, what a coincidence. I recently finished Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, never coming across it until recently, but despite it being almost 20 years old, I loved every bit of it! It seems to have so much soul/personality, I don't know what to call it, but it definetely gave me something that newer games never do (except maybe for Disco Elysium).

DOS 2 is truly a masterpiece and I’m really happy to see that larian studios are the ones making BG 3 they are truly putting their all into it and so far the early access is excellent and it’s shaping up to be a genre defining masterpiece.

Personally I think that DOS2 is better then BG3 ever will be for 1 really good reason. DND 5E well a really fun system is a lot simpler then any other system out their something video games don't really need (because the computer handle all the math and abilities). Well BG3 is good it is also very much an advertising campaign for 5e. Personally I think (from what I have played in BG3 so far) that 5e will hold them back compared to the system used in DOS2. Also they are putting way too much effort into the romances which almost always suck in games when you have that mix and match everyone is bi thing going. Will it be a good game? Sure. Genre Defining? Nope. 5e is far less interesting then older editions of dnd or pillars of eternity or DSO or several other rpgs that were made directly for the computer medium.

@@Vrindlevine I'm completely with you on this. I genuinely don't like BG3 because of this. And while I didn't think DOS2 was anything great, I thought it was alright. Had some rough edges to smooth over, but was a big improvement over the first. I think a DOS3 would have actually been really great as they built on their own system, and refined those edges, taking all they had learned along the way and building off of their successes. BG3 is simultaneously too reminiscent of DOS2 to really capture the old previous games in the BG series, and oddly enough too different from DOS2 ruleset wise to really build on from that system and improve it. They are trying to hit a weird happy middle ground and just missing the mark. I just think it's a bad idea to do a direct translation from table top to computer, because the weaknesses (particularly D&D combat) get translated over as well. Using the ruleset as a base is fine, a really good start even for a CRPG, but honestly liberties should be taken to play to the strengths of being on a computer. Oh, and the whole die rolling thing... just doesn't work. I get what they are going for (and it was worth a try), but it just isn't going to carry both the kinetic satisfaction of throwing those dice, or the social satisfaction of nailing/missing that roll in a crucial moment on the tabletop when it is simulated. That's a table top strength you just can't capture, especially since you can just load up a save and undo a bad roll. They need/needed to lean away from the table top strengths, and lean into the PC strengths more.

I feel that FF8 is so underrated compared to the other FF PSX games. FF7 is a classic and 9 has a lot good going for it, but people just tend to ignore 8. Shame. I played my first FF game (PSX FF7) a year ago and have been working my way. Just finished 10. The final battle of 8 is still the most hype of all 4 of them.
@LPcrazy_88

Much respect for the FF8 love, it was always tied as my favorite Final Fantasy game along with 7. I just absolutely loved the aesthetic of 8 so much more than 7 and even tho there is no argument that 7 is god-tier gaming, 8 just connected with me a little more than 7 did. Bonus points to 8 in that it never made me cry where as 7 made me feel way more than I wanted to in a video game.
@TheOneBearded
@TheOneBearded 2 года назад
@@LPcrazy_88 The aesthetic for 8 was cool. Of the four I have played so far, 9 had my least favorite aesthetic because it was pure fantasy. I enjoyed the other ones more because it was fantasy plus something. 7 was fantasy with this almost (imo) post-apocalyptic sort of vibe, 8 was fantasy with a more modern/futuristic aesthetic (just look at the design for balamb garden and other late game locations), and 10 was fantasy with a polynesian theme. 9 being pure fantasy felt a little bland in comparison.

Baldur's Gate 2 is seriously more arcade-y than the original Baldur's Gate. Whereas BG1 felt and played like a d&d game, BG2 is more reminiscent of Diablo or Path of Exile, with large hordes of enemies attacking you all at once. Not to mention that time wasn't as kind to BG2's more cliche 90s aesthetics.

I'm an older gamer (42 years old), so some of my favorite games may be games not a lot of people will know off the bat, unless they grew up knowing them or having them recommended to them. My list is in no particular order: 1) Lunar Silver Star Story Complete - This was the first JRPG game I remember playing, back on the PS1, that had voice acting and anime style cinematics. It's also a lengthy game, more so for being from the PS1 era. Fantastic characters, missions and story. It's a rare and expensive game if you are looking to find a physical copy, and one that can be played still on PS1 or a BC PS3 (which thankfully I still own, and it works!!) 2) Suikoden II - This game is one of the best games of all time, for many of my friends, and other people that I see on YT, Twitter, Twitch etc. It just does everything *right*, I cannot think of one negative thing about this game. When I turned 35, I made it a goal to try and get all of the Suikoden games in physical format, thankfully the only one that eludes me is the first game. But I have the guides for it, and the artwork and characters hold up even to this day! 3) Stardew Valley - You might be thinking... really? Yes really. This game, along with No Man's Sky, came out during a difficult time in my life, and both games saved me from a very deep depression and other medical stuff going on. I enjoyed this game so much, it's my most played game with over 4k hours logged across Steam, Xbox and PS. I never played a Harvest Moon or Story of Seasons game, Stardew Valley was my first introduction to the farming sim. And it's opened my eyes to so many other great games in that genre. 4) WarCraft 3 (Battlechest edition) - I love RTS games, and WC3 was my first introduction to t hem. Loved the story and lore the game provided so much, and this was a time when the internet was in it's infancy so information was very hard to come by. The fantasy aspect and various races in the game helped introduce me to some of my other favorite games: StarCraft, EverQuest, Spellforce, and Disciples. None of which would have been possible without WC3. 5) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Some of you are probably groaning right now lol, and that's fine. This game is just the most perfect example of a fantasy RPG. For all it's flaws (looking at you Roach doing crazy things), it gets everything right: Story, quests, side quests, crafting, skills etc. It also has, what I consider to be the GREATEST DLC Expansion of all time; Blood & Wine. I know the combat was a big issue for many gamers, as well as the sheer size of the game itself. But it's a game that I go back and replay every Dec, just to get lost in the world again. 5) Yes my 5th would be a tie, and that tie would be the amazingly underrated Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. Amazing game, combat, vocations, and Bitterblack Isle is a great piece of endgame content. Honorable Mentions: Baldur's Gate 2 (introduced me to my favorite fantasy / fictional character of all time, Drizzt), Dragon Age Origins, Knights of the Old Republic, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and Raft.

Favourite setting: Arcanum - A classic high fantasy world going through an industrial revolution. Favourite combat system: Mount & Blade Warband - The only game I have dedicated hundreds of hours into mastering combat, specifically melee combat. Favourite story: Planescape Torment - I will never consider amnesia to be a overused trope. Uncovering the Nameless One's past was extremely enjoyable. The thing I liked about FF 12 (though I never did finish it), was how it was pretty much the plot, and cast for Star Wars: A New Hope. It starts in a desert town, with a random, blonde headed teenager, with dreams of being a pilot. He get's swept up in larger events, when a wizened old mentor with personal ties to the Evil Lancer shows up and draws him into the conflict. There is a princess on the run who needs their help. There is a smuggler with a really fast ship, AND a really tall furry companion/copilot. The Evil Lancer character ends up having a surprise plot twist background, linked to the main cast, though slightly differently. It was the most instantly understandable story in an FF game I'd ever played. It was grounded, straightforward, and not overly insane with bizarre shit that seems to bloat all jrpgs.

1) Pathfinder: Kingmaker. Yes, I know objectively Wrath does pretty much everything better. But Kingmaker is simply more enjoyable to me. I prefer the tone, the freedom, and the scope of choices you're allowed to make. Including the fact you can nope out of the entire last chapter and not lose your Kingdom. 2) Championship Manager 01/02: The CM/FM series is a series I've had one of the longest continuing attachments to in my life. But it started in earnest there. And I played this game literally until the disc cracked. And that was despite the fact it was not sold directly in the US, so I would have to import it, paying for it in English Pounds. But I played just about every league in global football through that game. From the depth of English lower leagues to Brazil. And it was a game you could fly through the seasons with in a way you can't today. 3) Europa Universalis II: I played the original and liked it. But the 2nd is where my love for Grand Strategy Games truly kicked off. I'm a history geek. So this played right in. I also used to write novel-length AARs of my playthroughs on their website. My best run was taking 1 province Geldre, recreating the Netherlands, and then ensuring the Dutch Empire replaced England's as the global superpower in the colonial age. All while repeatedly rapping France and Germany on the nose. 4) Baldur's Gate. What more need be said about the 1st CRPG I ever played. 5) Civilization 2: Still, to my mind, the best game in the franchise. Most freedom. Most strategy. Again, history geek's perfect playground. The later versions of the game have lost that wonder, imho.

I am currently playing kingmaker (Pitax palace so near end game) and there are some issues like how you need to constantly buff your party before every fight or how at the beginning I didn't know that unrest can increase if you fail/don't do story missions so when I found about it, It was to late and I have to constantly do stability/unrest missions which means that I cannot upgrade my advisors that have -4 -3 on rolls from 'high' unrest and missions that require 40DC which means I have 0-25% of success with nearly all my advisors and I spent 600 on improving unrest from just one mission, basically I am on a timer to finish the game before my low stability or unrest will kill me with way to high costs. I had to micromanage building mage towers to fast travel and looking on wiki on how to progress because every day counts and it becames more of a chore, again I think that it could be easily avoidable but I and I think most players were not prepered for that xD (I still love this games otherwise I wouldn't bother to do all of that to finish it, I think it's great when it comes to scale, missions and characters and how many choices you have when designing your kingdom, it's just annoying that for me to solve most of my problems I would need to reload a save from a real month ago xD)

Great post! My top 6 (showing my age here, and I'm going to "cheat" by lumping some games together...): (1) Ultima 3 (my 1st CRPG, played on a Commodore 64) (2) Forgotten Realms SSI "Gold Box" series (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness) (3) Everquest (over a *year* of played time on my main, nuff said) (4) Doom (the original, 1993. Completely ground breaking. The granddaddy of all FPS games.) (5) Baldur's Gate 1&2 (revived CRPGs, and it could be argued they revived PC gaming. Still replay them every 2 or 3 years. (6) Battle Brothers (My most played game for the past couple of years. According to Steam I've logged 424 hours on it, and still play it every day I'm off work.)

I've been playing video games for almost 40 years and from the massive variety of experiences across that time, it is fantastically, excruciatingly difficult to try to create a list with a concept as loaded and limiting as "5 all-time favorites". However, if pressed to talk about 5 games that have been absolutely instrumental in my gaming passion and which remain at the top of my mind today, here goes (in no particular order): Doom (1993), Super Metroid, The Curse of Monkey Island, Fallout, Thief 2: The Metal Age Honorable mentions include: Contra, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Baldur's Gate, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, System Shock 2, Sid Meier's Civilization 6

My personal favourites are, 1. Skyrim SE - I love making up a story and motives for builds/characters, as well as personalising the aesthetics with mods; chatbotGPT implementation is hilarious 2. Star Wars: KOTOR - I played when I was 13 (on iOS) and so have strong nostalgic feelings, especially towards the characters 3. Mass Effect LE - Unique world + the very model of a scientist salarian 4. Deus Ex: MD - The music and general ambience draw me in; some side missions are very memorable like the murder investigation 5. Dishonored - Favourite immersive sim Other favourites are: Prey; Starfield*; Baldur's Gate III*; Fallout NV; Resident Evil 7* (watching others play); Far Cry 4; Left 4 Dead 2; Dead Island (* = I haven't played myself)

FFXII is also my favorite FF game. There's something special about Yasumi Matsuno's games that only he can reproduce. Like, the FF franchise already has a very unique take on fantasy, "magi-tech" societies and kingdoms and stuff and then there's all that in a middle east kind of art style, environment design and color palette that is only present when he's involved with the project.

It wasn't hard to predict 4/5 games but always nice to hear few additional words about them. My top 5: 1. Europa Universalis 4 - my adventure with games started with strategies (Legion, Commandos, HoMM) I believe that this is the best game I've ever played. The amount of content, goals to achieve, countries to play, multiplayer and relative complexity... I have 2000 hours in this game and I still have ideas for next playthrough 2. Divinity Original Sin 2 - I've played all Divinity games and this is by far the best one. Game shines both in Roleplay (which as a Game Master I'm really fond of) and mechanics. And it is the best coop game ever. Unfortunately, music wasn't as mesmerizing as in previous games but at least it was reactive. 3. Witcher 3 - great action game, with a lot of choices, many interesting characters, dialogues and quests. And it is based on books which are even better 4. Hades - Perfect art, music, mechanics, narrative using death as plot device. I really like how the game allows player to 'craft' his own difficulty level 5. StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty - my favourite RTS. Unique objectives in each mission, RPG elements and interesting plot. Rarely any RTS is good in any of these elements

the final fantasy 12 reasoning makes a lot of sense to me. Back in 2020 I was rooming with two of my best friends and we found our selves playing through a few single-player games as a group. It's a shame that no one remembers the old, classic cRPG's from the 80s. Back then, we had cRPG's like the Bard's Tale series, the Ultima series, Moebius and Windwalker, Deathlord, the original Wasteland, Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World, etc. ... not to mention all of the D&D games from SSI. There were so many classic cRPG's from the 80s ... well before Baldur's Gate was even a thing ... and they've all been mostly forgotten.

WotR and DOS2 are in my top 5 as well. Baldur's Gate 2 was my favorite game for a long time, by now there are games that do most things better but it's hard to beat nostalgia and the deep impression BG2 left at age 13. As I get older games don't have such long lasting impact on me anymore so it's hard to make a fair comparison to the older infinity engine games, can't say if they should be higher or lower. Morrowind will probably remain my favorite elder scrolls game forever for the same reason even though some of it aged poorly.

A lot of your top games (Divinity Original Sin 2, Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous) seem to be more about you enjoying the systems, which makes a lot of sense (your top games should be fun for you to play). But since you've completely played through so many RPGs I'd be really curious to here which of them had the most consistently interesting stories with good payoff, especially since you seem to prioritize full voice acting which I do too!

Dark Souls 1 is probably my all time favorite game. Or Bloodborne. Or maybe even Borderlands 2. I had so many hours upon hours in those games, when a friend and myself would just do all nighters playing them together. Sadly I have not found as much enjoyment in later soulsborne and looter shooter games. I think I have just grown bored with those style of games. And the fact that I am at a different point in life than I was a decade ago just like everyone. On the Flip side, I have had a resurgence of interest in retro style crpgs. I loved Baldur's Gate 1&2, and Fallout 1&2, and Icewind Dale 1&2, but moved away from games like that for a long time. But now there are some really good new crpgs that put me in mind of those classic ones. Even if I have yet to finish a single modern crpg.
