Nice video Gary. I do love the lineup of inks you used. For any discussion of inexpensive "cheap" Japanese pens, one should include the Platinum Prefounte, & Plaisir both of which use the same style nib as the Preppy. Another pen to look at is the the Muji Polycarbonate which seems to be a Muji-branded Platinum using the same nib. They are the Sailor Compass in the US as well, and I've been on the fence about that one. I have some vintage Sailor Pocket pens, but the newer one I have is the High-Ace Neo with a 1.0 mm nib. They call it a calligraphy pen, but it suits me well to give my writing more character on occasion. And for a green ink, if you haven't tried it, try Robert Oster Green Diamond it's such a wonderful green ink.

The low-end Japanese pen that intrigues me nowadays is the Pilot Kakuno, which receives near universal acclaim. However the smiley face on the nib is a deal breaker for me.

The Kakuno uses the same nibs as a metropolitan and prera. So u can just switch it out, shame though I quite like the faces.

This is another pen on my list. I like the idea of a face on it, but that's just my inner child coming out.

Like you, I'm not terribly fond of the smiley face... but the pen is so darn comfortable and reliable that I just ignore the face.

I have been interested in the Prera. I have not gone into the less expensive models of Pilot pens but this interests me a lot. I did have a Varsity years ago. It was made to be used once and done. I have not seen the Compass. It seems to be the size of the 1911S. It seems to have a smallish nib Good review, Garry.

Thanks. The Compass has a different name in the US, I think the Junior.

The Sailor Compass feedback is an acquired taste for me.. but it really depends on the mood I'm in and the paper I use it on. If I use it on smooth paper it's great, but nothing too toothy - then it's torture to use the pen. Also a shout out for the Pilot Varsity.

I've yet to get a Varsity. I will eventually get one so I can experiment with trying to refill it.

Yep, I eyedroppered my Preppy medium on the first refill. The Platinum converter costs as much or more than the pen so it's a no-brainer for an eyedropper fill. All that's required is a layer of grease on the threads. I've just got Diamine Royal blue in mine. It's my EDC pen. My document signing black pen is a Jinhao 599-A fine with Platinum Carbon Black, because the nib and feed come out easily for cleaning so very low anxiety. These are the two pens that are always inked up no matter what, and both can go long periods without writing no problems at all. Yes the Metropolitan comes with the squeezy ink sac converter. I really don't have a problem with it as it works fine and it doesn't really matter once it's filled. My first fountain pen back in the 70's was my father's 1940's Platignum which had an ink sac, so it just seems normal to me.
