In this short video, we give five different formulas for pi (or related constants) using only a single diagram consisting of a 2x3 rectangle and a triangle inside. Using the fact that the tangent of an angle is the ratio of the opposite and adjacent sides of an angle (and you can get the angle using the arctangent of the appropriate ratio), we decompose angles (of measure pi/4, pi/2, and pi) using certain triangles with visually computable arctangents using the diagram.

This visual proof is due to Rex Wu and comes from the March 2003 issue of The College Mathematics Journal (www.jstor.org/... ) see pages 115 and 138.

I definitely think the π = arctan(1) + arctan(2) + arctan(3) is the most elegant of the 3 formulae. It’s so simple, yet brilliant.

one of the bests, keep up the good work, I think all of them was beautiful but maybe the simplest is the best, the fifth one.

Using the same diagram, we may also show arctan (1) + arctan (1/phi) + arctan (1/phi^3) = pi/2 arctan (1) + arctan (phi) + arctan (phi^3) = pi where phi is the golden ratio.

Sorry, I mean the Garfield rectangle, not the 2x3 rectangle.

nice … so much from a simple diagram! also maybe Matt Parker will use one of these simpler formulas the next time he does a pi-by-hand adventure😁

I suspect these converge too slowly. But I haven’t looked into it to say with certainty :). Thanks!
