He's the least secretive secret agent ever, a drunk who cares more about the woman he's boning than the Queen, and cost the Western world more than he could possibly save them. And it's all by design.

Fun fact: real life former secret agents have gone on record saying that all of the actors who have played James Bond would have never gotten past the screening process because they are either too tall or too good looking. You want a secret agent who can blend in and look as unassuming as possible.

So I was watching a documentary about psychopaths a little while back, and they had a countdown of famous movie psychopaths, and, well... you can see where this is going, can't you? Apparently James Bond is *ridiculously* high on the psychopath scale, especially Connery. They showed the scene where he electrocutes a guy in a bathtub, cracks a joke and then saunters away as the perfect example. Just thought I'd put that out there...

To refute the wife proving continuity of a single bond. Any new bond would be inclined to finish up the previous bonds unsettled accounts thus ensuring their own will be tended in the certainty of their untimely demise. This would help facilitate that reckless no looking before they leap fearless mentality needed by a bond, james agent. Also it provides a stong bond between the james agents.
@cadb8
@cadb8 8 лет назад
+cory greene But you never know when a James Bond is going to die, so you never really know when you'll need to replace one (except the lucky ones who retire). So, they just always have an womanizer alcoholic agent who probably won't really fit in any role in a secret agency except for the Bond one or they get an agent with a completely different personality and say "well, you should probably get a divorce and now you like Martinis. Good luck being the new 007"? I think this movies are made by a shitload of different people... Some of them abide to "all Bonds are one dude" thing and put some hints on their movies, others like the idea of Bond being a codename and put hints on their movies.

The truth of the matter is that James Bond is a copy of the original Bond, updated with modern knowledge then imprinted onto the brains of secret agents. They choose physically fit men to brainwash into being bond. Bond isn't a person and he isn't a code name. James Bond is a conditioning program. They just keep making bonds by printing the original bond personality onto a new host (Which explains why they all like the same drinks and womanizing) but they also keep their own memories about facts and data. After each mission they create a updated program to imprint on the next Bond. That is how James bond knows so much and is so skilled at everything. He is the sum total of all the bonds before him imprinted on a new host brain.
@hoopsiclemcgee4244
@hoopsiclemcgee4244 8 лет назад
Why don't they remove the negative aspects of Bond? If they can brainwash someone then removing the alcoholism is probably a good choice. Make him a little less trusting of the women companions that end to betraying him. If you can change someone's personality to that degree, they could do better than bond
@qazmko22

If each Bond knows that he is going to die very soon, then it doesn't matter that he smokes or drinks or womanizes. He can't die of Lung Cancer from smoking, he doesn't live long enough to develop it. He can't die of liver disease from drinking, he doesn't live long enough to develop it. He can't die of STD's from Sex, he doesn't live long enough to develop it. but I agree they should teach him to trust people less, even those closest to him.

@NotTheSauce
@NotTheSauce 9 лет назад
The theory of Bond as a codename isn't necessarily destroyed by Teresa Bond's existence and death - so one Bond gets married, his wife is then killed, then that Bond dies and is replaced. The newer Bond kills the guy who killed her - because presumably anyone who got close enough to do that is an actual threat to at least the secret service and potentially to national security. Hence why she's buried under the name Bond - even in death, acknowledging her other name/s could be dangerous and allow people to find information about the secret service and the 00 agents. It's also possible that the progressive Bonds know each other - they're colleagues, it's totally possible that the newer Bond is mourning his friend's wife and his own friend, plus extra emotional distress for the danger and tragedy of never being able to have relationships without risking them, yourself, and the fate of the world. Makes more sense than shapeshifting and is less annoying than constant rebooting .
@andrewsmith74
@andrewsmith74 6 лет назад
None of the James Bonds have necessarily died - they could have retired, changed jobs or been given new identities. Yes, visiting the grave of a colleague's wife is quite likely - especially if the colleagues were friends. The wife of a secret agent might not know his real name, so when she marries him she would take his fake surname. Giving away the real surname would be a security risk.
@dowingba
@dowingba 5 лет назад
If Bond was a codename her last name wouldn't be Bond. And Roger Moore wouldn't be mourning her. In fact it would be stupid to even go to her grave.

Counterargument... Memory reprogramming. MI6 may just be reprogramming a consistent memory of the former bonds to each new agents to provide a consistent performance for each 007. And the tech isnt really that farfetch seeing the tech available on the Bond Universe. It can explain why each bond still fell for the old Honey Trap maneuver Since each one of them are pre programmed the old faults of the old bond.

@johnr8095

So, if bond uses the Walter PPK but there are different bonds, why do they all use the same gun? You'd think that individual Bonds would use the gun most suited to him. And why would they all drink the same drink? You'd think maybe one bond would want a Heineken, rather than a martini.

Let me clarify some things: James Bond was originally a character in a book series. He was one guy, given the codename 007. The 00 agents are the ones that have a short shelf life. The "other fella" was either the previous 007, or a nod to Sean Connery that was not meant to be canon. And Jason Bourne was one alternate identity for a guy originally named David Webb who was in the military who signed up for a secret government assassination program. I agree that Bond is a bad spy though.
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 4 года назад
I know this is hella late, but thankyou. I always figured the "other feller" was a reference to another 00 officer...maybe 002 or 004. And I never got the Bourne reference either. Unless the movies or some fan fiction retconned it, it was never a "code name." Of course, Bond was never a secret agent anyway. He was an intelligence officer - "secret agent" is the British term for an informant.

We'll just think about in a brother in arms perspective your comrade has just died but he can't be known to have died in a blaze of glory because if the enemy knew Bonds died like flys then there would be a shit ton of James Bond movies so as I said instead of paying respects to a fallen brother you instead give it to the next closest thing(their wives) so they can still keep up the idea that no bond died from bullet holes or other such death but instead die from old age kinda like the spartan 2's from halo they never go KIA just MIA so pretty much to sum it up this new bond is paying respects to a fallen ally by giving flowers to his wife

@tsevca
@tsevca 8 лет назад
Anthony Sforza All those big criminals members of Facebook group "Elite villains of the world"? Not to that extent, points for the idea though, but even in Fleming´s time, there must have been real possibility of word spreading around. He did not kill every character. There must have been one meaningless criminal, who escaped and worked for another. Didn´t your boss ask you during interview, why you lost your previous job?
@AnthonySforza
@AnthonySforza 8 лет назад
tsevca Actually, asking that is somewhat illegal. Like when they call your former employer, they can't ask why they fired you. Pretty much only whether what you'd put on the resume was true and you were employed there. Which is why it's so hard to pin down those hospital serial killers, because the hospitals fire them instead of bringing in the police... then they move on to another one. Digressions aside, I totally get what you're saying and often wondered that myself. Like with undercover cops. One person from an operation is going to be free to move on to another organization and then eventually said cop is going to be found out, like "Hey... Carlo, can we talk a minute?" I mean, I guess Scarface addressed that, but still. Or, like when they're testifying at a trial for someone they've brought down. How the fuck is NOBODY in any of those court galleries not going to recognize the guy that put their cousin or some shit away, when he's trying to infiltrate an organization they're a part of? I suppose A Scanner Darkly found a way around that, though it's not realistic up to this point in time. Anyhow, I can understand maybe the FBI or something, but with city cops, there's only a finite amount of criminal gangs or organizations in which to infiltrate... there has to be some overlap somewhere.
@tsevca
@tsevca 8 лет назад
Anthony Sforza That depends on the country. It isn´t in mine. I get what you mean, but those undercover cops use different identities. Bond always introduces himself as James Bond. He doesn´t even try to blend in.
@AnthonySforza
@AnthonySforza 8 лет назад
tsevca Truth be told, ever since I was a kid, I thought "James Bond" was his fake identity. Though yes, I get the identity parts, but what about faces. That's kind of more what I was referring to. Like I remember watching the Miami Vice movie where they're all walking around the hospital with badges around their necks and thinking that was fucking idiotic. What if someone was in their with someone else because of a gunshot wound or something, then recognizes them a couple weeks later... from when he saw them walking around with a badge around their necks. Sure, it may have worked in the show back in the 80s where they take down a different small time dealer every week, but now the stakes are higher and the operations are deeper, they're bound to run into somebody that would recognize them.
@haltopen12
@haltopen12 8 лет назад
I always had my own theory about James Bond, that he was just a creation of.a government program to create perfect spies. Sky fall isn't the name of James bonds house, it's the name of the program that produced bond. Raoul Silva was a previous bond that M abandoned when he failed his mission. That's why he's obsessed with M and Bond. Bond was his replacement in the program. And Blofeld isn't Bonds adopted brother, he's a reject from the sky fall program. He was implanted with false memories after they abandoned him, and the only real thing he can remember from those days is bond. The "father" he killed was actually their instructor from the program.
@AnthonySforza
@AnthonySforza 8 лет назад
Verrry interesting... Though admittedly, I remember sitting in the theatre watching Skyfall and thinking "Is this a reboot of the reboot?" It just didn't fit the previous two for me. Good movie on it's own or as the prelude to Spectre... but as a sequel to Quantum of Solace, not so much. Also, the whole "Let's make Daniel Craig into Sean Connery" aspect really wasn't on my list of awesome things, either.

Hm, the theory that James Bond and his 007 title are inherited positions seems to make the most sense. Maybe there was a James Bond (Connery, perhaps) at one point that worked for MI:6 who accomplished many dangerous tasks for them. Eventually he died and they decided to keep his name as a position title, as a sort of honorific. Think about it, most of the Bonds are exceptionally skilled. MI:6 hires and trains them to be that way, gives them the Bond title along with 00 status(Dalton, Lazenby, Moore, Brosnan). As time went on, MI:6 made plans for another 'real' James Bond. They give a couple that works for them the last name Bond and tell them to name their son James and to groom him in their ways. When that kid came of age, he trained at MI:6 and became their best agent. A second 'real' James Bond (Craig), as that is his actual birth name and not merely an accepted title. And that's the Bond we pick up on with Casino Royale. A little 'out there' perhaps, but it makes a certain kind of sense. But then again, I've only seen like 12 Bond movies and only read 3 of the books, so I'm hardly an expert on the matter.

Daniel Craig is the original, if you will allow suspension of belief and accept it. Even though it has much more modern technology compared to the others, Casino Royale is actually the first in the series. How come we never hear the suggestion that the Bond franchise is a presentation of various parallel timelines? Each Bond is in his own universe, either born a bit earlier or a bit later, with slightly different personality traits from the others. And some events happen in different universes, albeit slightly differently from each other. The parallel universe theory totally explains everything.

In Skyfall you find out that Silva's name is actually Tiago Rodriguez and in Goldeneye Alec Trevelyan said "back from the dead, no longer just an anonymous star on the wall at MI-6." Implying that the 00 Agents give up their real names for code names. "James Bond" could just be a code name and backstory

John R A spy needs a fake name to go by on. So they use 'James Bond' for every 007. I'm sure they do the same thing with each 00.

There are two 006's mentioned in the bond lore. One is Jck Giddings. The other is Alec Trevalyan. Meaning, when one 00 agent dies or retires another person takes on the number. They are not all assigned both the code number and then also given the same code name.
@Jorvard

John R Or they used different codenames, because these there too eye-catching and the idea of this strange janitor guy, who stumbled into the conference room and wasn't even supposed to be there in the first place, but kinda hung around and everyone thought he made good points so they took his name choices only to realize that, other than James Bond, Trevalyan and Giddings aren't that common nor easy to forget.

Well technically he didn't make any point with the whole "wife" thing. I mean think about it: Bond is the code name of every agent. That means if a woman dies with the last name Bond, even arguing that somehow the agency just magically lost all records of her death, that she would be identified as somebody who was at least close to a former agent. His mourning isn't necessarily personal; he could be so upset because its ABSTRACT tragedy; the idea that an agent before you had to outlive his wife would piss you off enough to want to get revenge. If you have such a short life span, you necessarily would have at least some sort of compassion for those that came before you. The point is moot, the argument that Bond is merely a codename still stands.

Ok, so we go from Sean Connery to George Lazenby and then Sean comes back from The dead for Diamonds are Forever... What really happened is that they didn't want to reboot after From a View To A Kill (in the 80's rebooting a franchise probably wasn't usual) and chose a much younger actor for The Living Daylights (Timothy Dalton) when Bond should be in his sixties (he even meet a former Felix Leiter from Live and Let Die, he told his wife that James was once married but his wife died). Then the cold war was over and they felt that James Bond was not necessary anymore, but the series made shitloads of money and they came back with Brosnan. He would be a 70 years old man and that wouldn't make any sense, so they made it a non-declared reboot as the whole cast was new except for Desmond Llewelyn (Q) (then even changed the new Moneypenny!). Die Another Day sucked so they openly rebooted the franchise. You see, James Bond is like a comic book character, he is portrayed in different ways but he is always the same guy, like Batman. If Ian Fleming wrote some kind of ending to the Bond series before he died the character wouldn't be so misterious about his past.

Yes. While big makes a very good point, the video discusses 007 as a concept. If somebody attacks or hurts that concept in a way that would dishonor those serving or representing that symbol, then those who were sleighted would naturally seek some form of retribution.

I always wondered why James Bond never seem to have a past life. Here's my theory: a lot of kids are taken and trained to do cool stuff and play poker. Each one is taken to fight crime and when one dies another replaces them. And since they grew up together they have a strong bond and are inclined to finish what the previous couldn't. This would explain a lot about the continuation of their stories and would also explain why Bond always goes crazy with wine and women. It's probably just he's first time of being to the outside world.

The theory about it being a different Bond every time works (except for the times when they talk about Bond's dead wife in other movies) but it only works with the movies. In the novels, it's always the same guy. In the movies, the first Bond (Connery) retired. The second Bond (Lazenby) resigned due to losing his wife. Then the first Bond came out of retirement for a bit until they found a replacement. The third Bond (Moore) also retired. The fourth Bond (Dalton) was fired for being too hot headed and brash and stuff. He was a walking political incident waiting to happen. The fifth Bond (Brosnan) was fired after he finished his last mission in Die Another Day because he was captured by the North Koreans or whatever they were. Now we have the Craig Bond. What will happen to him I wonder? I just hope they get Christian Bale or Idris Elba to replace him when the time comes.

If they use Idris Elba (huge fan, totally support that idea) they could actually use the 'James Bond, 007 as a code name' theory legitimately. One of my favorite fanfics played with the whole inheritable 007 title idea. Basically, there are 9 different 00 agents, each specializing in different areas. These are the elite in their field, the best of the best at solving their missions. When they die, (Because its like, SUPER rare for a 00 agent to survive long enough to retire to a desk job) a new agent is chosen to take their place, take their identity, and keep the mythology of the immortal james bond going.

5:26 -Rant. WAIT! They can still be different Bonds. Maybe whoever takes over for the dead Bond isn't randomized? What if each Bond trains someone to take over for him when he dies? George-Bond could have has ties with Roger-Bond. If so, Roger-Bond could have been paying respects to Mrs. Bond anyway. George-Bond could have been right beside her, unmarked and off screen. I've never seen one of Tamahora's films, so I don't know if they're all bad or something, but even if that's the case, even bad directors/writers have the occasional good idea. Hell, a lot of bad stories have really cool or interesting ideas and it's just the execution that makes them bad (see David Cage and his games as an example).
@nifralo2752
@nifralo2752 8 лет назад
Paul Walsh The only Bond film he directed was so bad that the producers had to reboot the Franchise, and the producers thought it was so bad the vetoed it. Keep in mind they let him have a villain dressed up like Iron Man, an invisible car, Hallie Berry, a man with diamonds in his face, Madonna;s awful song and cameo and a Korean that turns himself white. And they let the writers write the following lines "Mr Bond's been explaining to me his big bang theory" Hallie Berry: "Yeah I think I got the thrust of it". And Henchmen:"I'm Mr Kill" 007: "Well there's a name to die for". And Gustav Graves speaking in bumper stickers the whole time. So when they all that pass and so much more, but not the code name thing, you know its a bad idea.

Actually, the "Theory" about "James Bond" being a "code-name" makes perfect sense. "Moore"'s "Bond" was probably just "avenging his predessessor"... After all, would Blofeld have really offered "a fortune" to a man who's wife he had killed?? But "to a man whom took the mantle", quite probably... Actually, the reason why "James Bond" is a "Code-Name" goes all the way back to the origins of the "007", which was the signature of the Physician, Astronomer, Astrologist, Mathematician and Advisor of Queen Elizabeth the First; John Dee... Oh... Did I forget to mention he was also the most trusted "Royal Spy" back in his days...? ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dee

Some say he was actually an "Alchemist", but What is truly "an alchemist", if not "a man somewhat knowledgeable in many sciences and whom can combine their knowledge of different fields to do things ununderstandable by the common peoples" Something like Dee, just as well as Bond... After all, "any science advanced enough will look as magick to the common peoples" Go back to the middle ages with an Iphone, and "providing you can find a way to recharge it (solar battery, whatever)", peoples would think that you are a sorcerer able to trap the "souls" of both "things" and "peoples" when you just "take a picture"... and you'd be burned at the stake... :-(

What about the multiple Bonds having the Bond Family Motto of "The World is Not Enough"? Do they just adopt the family motto with the name? I guess that makes sense. But, then there's Skyfall, the Bond family home where Daniel Craig's Bond clearly grew up. Is it just a coincidence that this current "James Bond" is actually a member of the real Bond family?

ReaperDethScythe The code-name theory doesnt make sense. Firstly, the openning scene of GoldenEye starring Pierce Brosnan is set in 1986. This, according to the code-name theory, meant that it went from Moore Bond, Brosnan Bond, Dalton Bond then back to Brosnan Bond. How could Brosnans Bond be brought back from the dead? Secondly, one of the major points in favour of the codename theory is that we have the same M character for Brosnan (while he is 007) and for Craig (while he BECOMES 007). This apparently proves that Craig is under the process of becomming known as the 'James Bond' after Brosnans Bond is supposedly killed. However, after Skyfall, we can see that Judi Dench in fact plays TWO different M characters. Raoul Silva in Skyfall refers to her being in station and in charge of Hong Kong Operations whilst it was being transferred to China, which would mean she was their in 1998-99. However, this is exactly when the Brosnan Bonds are set, therefor proving that BROSNAN AND CRAIG ARE IN A DIFFERENT UNIVERSE!

James Bond is a time lord lost from Galifrey that UNIT found that fell from the space time vortex, given to MI-6 due to his quick adaptability and regeneration properties and with every regeneration comes a different quirk of some sort but in essence is the same man. Finished.

The argument that he does more damage than the mission is worth isn't right. Look at the Bond villains: Most of Sean Connery's movies, George Lazenby's movie and some of Roger Moore's are fcussed SPECTER, these villains aren't after money they're just interested in seeing USA and Russia nuke each other so whatever damage Bond does is tiny by comparison to the conflict that would have happened had he not been there. Although it's not SPECTER, the villains in Octopussy are aiming to do something similar and in Tomorrow Never Dies US and Russia have just been replaced with Britain and China. So in all of these he's doing more good than harm by a long way. Goldfinger is planning on nuking Fort Nox, nuf said. Moonraker is about a guy who is literally planning to wipe out the entire human race and start again in space. In Living Daylights the majority of the explosions take place in Afghanistan when he's trying to blow up a plane full of drugs, so villains get stopped, drugs get destroyed and it all takes place in the middle of nowhere. I think the argument that Bond does too much damage has some holes in it.

Or... he is a "timeless character". A character who's adventures can span across different times and mediums in order to keep as an archetype in our modern society. Batman, James Bond, etc are characters which live in an obscure timeline which changes to meat societies needs for a heroes which can not only outlive the life/career of a regular man but can be passed on. They are today'f day and age folk stories.

the whole 'hey, nobody died!' party sounds like a really good idea. I would vote for that.

I've always liked the idea of the codename. Not because of any continuity problems it solves (because it probably creates as many continuity problems as it fixes), but because there is so much potential for interesting stories in that. How cool would it be for a Bond movie kill Bond halfway through the film and then have the new Bond avenge his death?

Several things wrong with their arguments: First off, it wouldn't be beneficial to just give the bad guys what they want to offset the costs... Not everyone is like Blodfeld, such as in Thunderball where he wants £100 million in white flawless uncut diamonds in exchange for the atomic bombs SPECTRE has. Look at Goldfinger, where he wants to irradiate the entire Fort Knox gold supply, or in Goldeneye, where Alex Trevelyan wants to hack into the Bank of England and steal all of their money. These are things that will destroy the world economy and send countries into chaos. Let's also not forget other plots like Moonraker, where Hugo Drax wants to use chemical agents to kill everyone in the world so he and his "perfect specimens" can return to Earth to repopulate the world with a race of strong and intelligent people. So, there's times where you can't just give what the bad guy wants. Second off, it's the same Bond. Reason why, every Bond, from Connery to Craig, are orphans whose parents died in a climbing accident when he was a kid. So, it can't be just a bunch of guys who take the name of James Bond, but they're all orphans whose parents died in a climbing accident. This was a weak argument for After Hours...

Unless as I mentioned in response to another comment on this video, the entire childhood is staged as a training program in order to create the perfect replacement for dead 007 agents.
@MasterManto

The same back story, every time? It's easy to change it up. "My parents died in a fire", "my parents died in a car accident", "my parents died in a freak explosion since their scientists". Also, may I add, After Hours forgot one of the most popular aspects of the spy genre of why it's a different looking Bond every time, and I think it's a great theory of why it's the same Bond. Face transplant... Think about it: Mission Impossible, Face/Off, and a bunch of other movies and TV shows use this trope. There must be guys Bond has faced that are still alive, who know what he looks like but don't know his name, so every now and then, he gets his face changed. If Q is able to build some of things he has for Bond, like a working jet pack or a submarine car, the technology in that universe has to exist for Bond to get a face transplant.

Mak Manto In the original script for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, it had a scene where James Bond was undergoing plastic surgery, but this was cut because the producers thought it would be boring for every new Bond to go under the same process

See? Same Bond, different face. I can also add that since he's a spy who has to go undercover a lot of times, he can probably change his voice pretty easily.

Mak Manto Ah, but going towards my "Bond is a Time Lord" theory, what if the "parents died in a climbing accident" backstory is just a cover story to hide his Time Lord past?

simple reason they have different faces. It is an updated movie. with a new actor. it has nothing to do with being a different spy under the code name Bond. Not to mention the code name for bond is not bond it is 007 there is also 006 005 004 003 002 001 and presumably 008 009 010 011 012 013 014 015 016 017 018 019 020 etc etc the number is there designation in MI16 the Number 00 is indicative that said agent has a license to kill in other words say he is on a mission and he is interrogating a guy and the guy refuses to answer his questions he has a license to kill said person. Bond is the 7th agent with a license to kill had it been a different person each time the code would not be 007 every time Sean beans character from goldeneye(006) would not be called Alec Trevelyan he would be called James Bond
@houseofaction
@houseofaction 9 лет назад
Not to mention Ian flemming came up with the title 007 after staying in a hotel the room he was in was room 1007 the 1 had fallen off so he came up with the idea for a secret agent designated 007
