Finally someone gets it, it’s not block the arm it’s destroy the arm, if the first two maybe three moves are done correctly u don’t need rest of the sequence

Amazing technique and execution. With no experience or training, no one is going to be able to get this. However if you have trained in the martial arts and practice this over and over it will work extremely effectively. Love how he uses his own body mechanics to make it his own and work. Fantastic bro!!!

Finally, a practical application. I like the fact that you are not stopping with just a one punch defense, because in a real fight no one who intended on doing you bodily harm is going to throw just one punch and see what it does. They are going to keep attacking you until they reach their objective or you stop them. And the fact that you have incorporated multiple attacks in this particular defensive set actually gives it a sense of realism and practicality.

I have never seen anyone do Karate like this. This is how it is supposed to be done. Thank you for sharing. Do you have any more videos like this?

So karate is supposed to be practiced against a guy just standing there, with his arms down?

At least this instructor shows realistic moves and attacks with purpose. Most don't do that. If you don't like it, move on@@davidrisselada6199

@jconney1 I have to agree with PR1Kenpo that the extension shown is a Charging Ram graft! I can name quite a few people and I won't because it doesn't mean a darn in this discussion! If we are always looking where we screw up AKA "What if" how can we know anything? just like trying to pull off hooking wings or parting wings against an "attempted" push.....a catalyst must push us to the next logical progression. I like the modified 5S where you strike the head and block!

1:59 of the video, the tackle catalyst is shown. He moves up the clock with the back fist and does the first part of Charging Ram, without the kicks. Now, if you understand family groupings and family related motions, then you would see what he is doing. Name dropping is is so Sean Kelley... Clark

So, you're telling us that the extension of Five Swords is Charging Ram? I have to disagree with the attack the weapon first and chop the neck second. Ah bit, at 3:16 you 'bypassed the hammer to the biceps and glanced in to the neck with your back up mass. I think that any follow up punch or attempted tackle ends with that formula. Interesting graft, Five Swords to Charging Ram. Clark

Hello. Iv'e always want to get a response from a respectable martial artist like yourself as to what I feel is a problem with most if not all Karate styles today. Take you 5 swords ( or any other kenpo technique) for instance, how would this executed defending a right lunge punch without stepping thru, but rather with the left foot leading right cross punch, as you demonstrated at the beginning of the video? You rarely see step thru punches in the street, but almost all striking based seem systems defend against step thru punches. I've studied Uechi-ryu, Shotokan, and yes Parker Kenpo, over the years. I thought that Kenpo would be different and it is great in many respects, but it still doesn't deal with this problem. It seems to me that it really doesn't address today's boxing based street tactics. Please don't take any offence to my thoughts, because none are intended. It's just something that been bothering me for a long time. What do you think? Don

I'm no master but I like to look at it as a model to start with. No attack I've "defended against" in the dojo seemed legitimate to me but neither are the techniques. They are controlled drills done to become familiar with the concepts and principles taught in a particular art, not real fighting. However as you become more advanced you can take more dynamic or "real" attacks and work what you know against them, getting the practice closer and closer to the real thing. If you're unlucky enough to be tested in the real thing I suppose this could accelerate and broaden your understanding of how to use what you've been taught or maybe you think its rubbish and move on to something else.

Fantastic question , and one I asked myself a lot and I have a Kenpo background as well as other arts. My conclusion was it's about getting the same reaction from my opponents body , by whatever tools I have at my disposal , not just trying to match Apples to Apples like a set Technique shows. They are just reference points. Then you take it into your own practice and see what you come up with. Inside striking range, nobody is fast enough to go "I know what that is, so I'm going to do this" for the most part. I started getting rid of having students feed each other step through , suspended strikes and had them snap them in and out instead. It was a great eye opener . I'd rather not start a flame war discussing it in public but feel free to pm me anytime if you want. Happy to share my input for what it;s worth. And yes, i am still a Kenpo fan, and I think most Kenpo folks would tell you the same

My answer: keep training, after 25+ years of Martial Arts you'll eventually see that it doesn't matter.
