Thank you, this was very helpful. Since I often do photography of people in the water, it's very important to know that the water is safe for people. I've ordered test kits. Much appreciated.
You saved my life with this. I took on a big pond project and I hadn't a clue where to start. I can already see some issues that you highlighted in this video so thank you!
Buying a house right now with a small pond, it's full of tree limbs but otherwise the water is that cloudy color you said was good for fish. Should I remove the tree limbs, and my dog likes to swim so guess that's not a good idea for the pond? I want a few fish in it e eventually. Thanks good informative video 👍
Tip # 0 start with a very well designed pond. Most people rely on luck. Also, most ponds across the northern have of the US can become good trout habitat. The deep water is cool enough, it just lacks the water quality for cold water fish to survive. Insightful guidance can turn a warm water pond into trout habitat despite what most people think.
Thank you for this excellent presentation. Which native species, specifically short sedges would you recommend to be planted on a bank of a small pond in New Jersey? Thank you very much for your help.
wtf - carp is the quintessential pond fish, how does it do badly in ponds?? 7:20 you can see it's been the most replayed section of this video (people is disbelief)

There is never a proper use of herbicide in a pond, even if you had a highly invasive species, in which case you'd be better off draining the pond entirely. I cannot believe some people have to be told aquatics plants are beneficial to pond health. And don't employee the use of invasive species to control plant growth, and fish, especially Carp will cause a huge nutrient overload in a pond. Also if you want a clearer pond water, Carp are not the answer as they will forage the bottom stirring up the bottom. For many ponds, the first few years can see large algal blooms as the pond ecosystem develops . Almost any other treatments, other than physical algal removal at the beginning will just have you chasing your tail for the rest of the pond's life. At least 30-60% of a pond should be covered in aquatic plants.
@Ryan Edwards Companies like chemlawn advocate for spraying everyone's lawn with weed-killer, but that doesn't make it right. Companies that make money poisoning the land and water will always tell you it's a good thing and can be done safely, but there is no safe level of poison. I'm glad you do a lot of research and want to better the world. Keep learning about non-chemical methods. Every plant and animal and insect that thrives at your natural pond will thank you. Including your children and grandchildren.
