Five WORST Things About Being an Au Pair | APOP

Au Pair, Oh Paris

We don't want to put you off au pairing, so if you're not an au pair yet, maybe close your ears! But, if you are an au pair, you may find this video is exactly what you've been experiencing! We can moan sometimes, but overall it's a great job, right??
Our list of worst things about being an au pair include:
1. Your hours aren't fixed - made plans for 8pm? Nope. You may find you're more likely to arrive at 8am the next morning. Ha... ha... ha. We're not joking.
2. You're always waiting around for that message to bring you back to the family home - on the other side of town? Too bad, you need to head back home and you need to be there within the next 10 minutes.
3. Eating becomes more of a pain than ever before - every family is different with this, but you may find bare cupboards and nothing to eat is a regular occurrence. We made a video about eating as an au pair and it's no joke: • What I Eat In a Day | ...
4. Children can be NASTY - make sure you can call your loved ones when you finish work as you might need someone to remind you that if you're going to be miserable, you may as well be in Paris.
5. Asking for money is a PAIN - we know these awkward encounters are necessary but we just don't want to deal. It may be a couple of weeks and a few awkward baguettes later before we decide to do the inevitable.
If you want to be part of our book, submit your stories to aupairohparis.com. We'll be publishing in February 2018 and your name could be in every copy! There are no rules for what to write - have you had a funny experience, have ways to deal with host parents, struggled after ending your au pair year?
Our APOP Bucket List is available for download and can help you get out and about in Paris. www.aupairohparis.com

My wife is a live out Nanny and thankfully she has been unbelievably lucky with the families that she has worked for, but when I asked her to come in to watch the video and told her the title of the video her reaction was hilarious! "Oooooh No!!! They are treated like absolute SLAVES!!!" Our hearts go out to live in Au Pairs. Seriously, private live out Nannying (especially if you have a lot of experience or maybe have studied maternity nursing) is absolutely the best path for you guys to go - and the money is insane! My wife is on way more money than I am, and I am paid well! Here's to the Au Pairs of the world!!!

Great video and everything mentioned is very true. I am currently an Au Pair in America and I’m ready to get the heck outta here! It’s definitely an experience and au pairs learn a whole lot. Some of the things I had to deal with whilst choosing my host family and being an Au Pair are: 1. Most of the time families will catfish you. During the interview process and matching with your host family please note that, they will make their homes and themselves seem very appealing. But if you are quick to believe them and don’t keep questioning them about the house and kids and schedule, you will find that a lot of the time families just want to hook you, and so everything you were promised during the interview process will not come into fruition. 2. There are no clear boundaries set because you will most likely be living where you work. So yes, asking questions about the schedule for the week and coming days are extremely important. Be firm that when plans are made you stick to them and you aren’t taken advantage. Being an Au Pair means you take care of the kids but you are still free to make plans for yourself and follow through with them. Some issues with being an Au Pair: 1. If you end up with host parents like mine, you’re probably going to be their live in maid and you will not even be paid for that portion of the work. If you are with an agency, speak to them about the non-childcare duties your host parents expect you to do. 2. Cleaning up after your host kids means you do not clean in circles! You clean up once a day and that is it. Please don’t think that you’re meant to be a machine and pick up after the kids all day. 3. Working 10 hours a day mean just that. You are meant to have 2 hours during the 10 hours where you have a break. So take it. You’re going to need it.

I was a Live-In Nanny for 7 months and I will never do it again. The pay is basically exploitation, I had more freedom and ate more/better on the Unemployment Benefit. The parents didn't get along, argued frequently, had different views on raising children and would get angry with me using one parent's parenting technique over the other's. I wouldn't get paid on time frequently and when I kept reminding the father, he got annoyed. The father worked from home so it's like living with your employer and landlord 24/7, not fun for anyone. They were a miserable couple who were racist and the father was also sexist. I had to try really hard to ignore their racist jokes towards me too. The mother told me she never wanted kids but only had one because her partner wanted to and she couldn't be alone with her child for more than half an hour per day, not an exaggeration. The nanny before me quit in 1 week and the nanny after me quit in 2 weeks due to a domestic violence incident between the couple. The father initially agreed to provide a reference for me but just didn't respond when my next employers tried to contact him, so much for getting a good reference :/ I wish I was more assertive, but it's awkward to do that because of the power imbalance. This video was a 100% true for me.

Thank you for this video ladies, I would like to say being a babysitter/nanny here in the city of New York is so similar to what you both have experienced. there were times I had to remind parents to pay me, yes that could be very uncomfortable and honestly I don’t know why people forget that they have a stranger in the house helping them with the kids. That requires them to pay you for that help🙄, super annoying . You both are so brave I could never live with a family, I get super annoyed just being in the apartment day-to-day and still being able to go home at the end of the day. keep in mind I love children but being a child care provider is a tough job and parents make it tougher.

All this is so true!!! Thanks for the video!❤❤❤For me was really really hard to deal with food thing.... Especially, cause the family lives in the countryside, 30 minutes cicling from the nearest shop ... Host dad told me once: "its easy to be an Aupair. No bills, when you are hungry you go to the fridge ... " This is bullshit. I actually love to cook and decide what I eat and get food.. but I had no possibility to do it. Couldn't neither to prepare me a coffee as I like to do, with italian moka, which is the first thing I do when I wake up 😉 ( different type of kitchen 🙄😮) that stuff for two months !! You have a "free accommodation" but you don't decide about anything at home. It's a very particular programme, really.😂

Thanks for the good reminders for host families that onus is on us to understand our au pairs needs and help ensure these are being met. Like pay on time always and ensure the food is available and good for them. I definitely interview for someone who seems to really love kids because you're right, it's not easy. It's not easy being a parent much less a young adult living with and caring for kids that aren't yours!

Host mom from Germany here, I find this super helpful, keep such videos coming! Huge difference for me is that in Germany au pairs have to live with a family. @Ryzot
@Ryzot 4 года назад
@@aupairohparis6083 That's so strange. Why would someone look to host an au pair if they are going to be like that? I guess one thing you learn from being an au pair is the wide variety of human beings that exist, most of them being totally bonkers. Though I'm not an au pair, I've seen my fair share of strange people. It can be hard to understand how someone could be so different from yourself.

I'm a 'host mum' to be and been bingeing all your videos. I can't imagine the kind of environment where the au pair is treated with so much ambiguity and awkwardness. I imagine in every host family it should be a rule to sit down with the au pair once a week and have a check-in about how the week went, how was the work load, if they are happy with how the children were behaving, if the schedule was ok, if there were any issues, etc. and of course to go through receipts of what needs to be reimbursed that week to add onto the pocket money. Is that not a commonly done thing? 🐣

Wow I felt this video so hard, especially about the whole thing on the kids can be so mean. This is my first time ever being an au pair and I’m currently in Italy. I’ve brought back to my room all my emotions from the day and have found myself crying more these past few weeks than I have this whole year. Also the foooood part all I’ve been eating is pasta and meats which isn’t bad but always so late haha. How do you build the courage to really talk to your host family about the treatment the kids give me? Because I don’t think the parents are understanding how much I’m being impacted by this :/

I'm an au pair for three little boys in Germany and I struggle with guilt when I am tired and need a break. My host family is amazing and are flexible with hours, like if they need me to work basically all day tomorrow then they let me have more of a break the day before. But sometimes I feel so guilty about being tired when I think about the fact that I didn't have to go through all of the late nights and frustrations and messes when they were smaller. Idk, I might just be worrisome and prone to guilt in general but i guess i thought I'd share :)

I never hardly ever ask her to watch my only kid if I’m not at work. If I work more than 40 I pay her overtime. We never go out to eat without her. Sometimes she picks out where we go to eat. She has her own car and I pay for her gas always. She drinks beer with me sometimes. I’ll buy her clothes at the mall sometimes

@aupairohparis6083
@aupairohparis6083 3 года назад
Mmmm.... That's a good question. Au Pairs are indeed live-in childcare, however, they are not full-time employees. They are young international students that live in a foreign country in the hopes of meeting new people, studying abroad, and making meaningful connections with their host families. The priority for Au Pairs is to experience life in a foreign country (kind of like in a "study abroad" program kind of way) for a year. Also, Au Pairs are also required to only help with light cleaning duties, but only if they are related to the children. For example, an Au Pair may be required to make lunch for the kids, but he/she should not make dinner for the entire family. An Au Pair may be required to do the laundry for the children, but would definitely not need to do laundry for the entire family. In short, I would say that to have an Au Pair you would also need to have time to include her/him into your life. The Au Pair will more likely be part of your family rather than a nanny. Hope this helps!
