I have been doing IT for 20+ years. This is probably the best video I have seen demonstrating what to do when something doesn't work right. Informative without being preachy to the novice. Nice job sir!
Mirroring sometimes works. Maybe one time out of 20. However, any attempt to move past home screen shuts down mirroring. Router is upstairs. Is there a distance issue? No iOS device I have works like I believe it should.
I have a 6S Plus and a gen 3 and gen 4, phone stopped picking up the gen 3. Is it because they are no longer compatible? My phone still picks up the gen 4, so this is the best I can come up with.
Hey there I just moved into my new place and haven't transferred my internet service to the new place. I was wondering can you mirror from my iPhone 6s to my Apple gen 4 without wifi?
Yes, you can. You don't need to connect both to an existing Wifi network. If you enable Bluetooth on your iPhone (and NOT disable Wifi), AirPlay will appear for you. Search for "Peer-to-peer AirPlay" on the Web.
Whenever i play video in the gallery on my iPhone it shows on the screen that this video is playing on tv using airplay i can hear the audio but can’t see the video can i get any advice for this how to fix it?
I know it might sound silly, but, have you really closed EVERYTHING on your iPhone, force-restarting it, turn off-and-on your WiFi/router, and resetting your Apple TV? I really mean it: rebooting everything.
Hi I just want to ask if u know how to resolve black screen on my mirascreen I am actually using an android phone. Whenver the netflix is open, I only hear an audio but theres no picture. I hope u could help me thank you.
Hi there! I have got a tv as a present and thinking of buying the Apple TV. My question: can I be able to stream free online movies from my iphone to the tv? I have iphone 6s plus. I do not download movies to the iphone so my only use of the TVs is for movies
Hi Mai! Thanks for asking - several questions here, right? Answers: 1. With the Apple TV, anything you are watching/seeing on your iPhone can be "AirPlayed" to your TV - it doesn't matter if it is RU-vid, Games, etc. 2. You can watch a bunch of things on the Apple TV itself: there is a Netflix app, you can rent movies from Apple as well, or Hulu, HBO Now (if you are in the US) - you don't even need to touch the iPhone, everything happens on the Apple TV and the "Siri Remote" is very comfortable to use. 3. If you just wan't to watch "Free Stuff" that is not actually "free", well, you must find your own way - it is possible of course, but it usually gets easier using a computer, not the iPhone. A Mac can also "AirPlay" to the Apple TV.
Hi +jessa calubiran! It is really easy: you bring-up the Control Center (0:23) and you choose AirPlay to your Apple TV (you don't need to turn on 'mirroring'). Then you go to Safari - If I remember well, any video you play will keep "black" (showing only the play-pause and progress controls) and will play full-screen on your TV. If it doesn't do so automatically, on the bottom of the video there will be an "AirPlay" symbol button for you to press and it will do :) Good luck!
Hi ! Really need help PLEASE , my HDMI cable (iphone to TV ) is not working .Its only shows the Barcode on the TV when connected , don’t know what to do ! help please ,many thanks
I have a jail broken iPhone 6s on 10.2. My lightning to hdmi adapter does not work while jailbreak is active. Maybe wrong place to ask. Any thoughts to why it doesn't work?
Hello Mike! I have no idea why it doesn't work - you'll have greater chances to find an answer to your case on Jailbreak forums or with RU-vidrs who make videos about jailbreak (which I have absolutely ZERO experience). Good luck!
Thank you +Doug Moran! I am glad you enjoyed it. Enabling bluetooth makes it easier for the iPhone/iPad to discover/establish communication with the Apple TV over harsh network conditions. It is, for example, what allows companies and schools to use AirPlay without the need of putting the iPhone/iPad on the same network of the Apple TV (peer-to-peer AirPlay; it needs wifi enabled on both devices, but it uses bluetooth to begin the process). You will probably enjoy reading these articles: - www.appletvhacks.net/2014/03/18/apple-tv-can-now-search-for-airplay-devices-via-bluetooth/ - www.afp548.com/2014/03/10/hidden-airplay-feature-in-the-appletv-6-1-ios-7-1-update/ - electronics.howstuffworks.com/airplay1.htm It might be unnecessary for your home if you have a simple network setup - but, as it makes it easier to overcome exceptions, I placed it as a valid step :) Does it make sense?
Can you actually show any authentic apple statement that mentions it uses bluetooth to begin the process ? Anyway your video is only about common sense. Nothing technical.
Need help or advice !! When I AirPlay my iPhone 6 and my Apple TV 3rd Generation It will play but 4-5 minutes into the video it will stop and quit Can you help ??
My problem is it shows my Apple TV device and I can connect to it, but the option doesn't pop up to mirroring. It only allows me to select my Apple TV device. Is there a way to solve that?
Hi Mark! Which iPhone/iPad are you using? AirPlay Mirroring is only available from certain models: - iPhone 4S or later (the iPhone 4 can't mirror) - iPad 2 or later (1st iPad and iPad Mini can't mirror) - iPod touch 5th generation or later support.apple.com/en-us/HT204289
When I start the video from my iPhone 6s in airplay mode to my Apple TV 4th gen the video keeps going from :01 to :00 over and over. I'm not sure what the problem is... since Apple updated their Apple TV firmware the issue has persisted.
Sometimes the App you are using to play the video is behaving badly. Do all the steps I show in the video - closing everything and doing it all over again. Do all steps.
hai i am trying to conect my apple tv to my ipad air. the videos sound is coming but its not mirroring with the ipad. the ipads screen is not showing up on the tv what should i do ?
I have an iPhone 6plusS I have a sharp flat screen - with blue tooth and hdmi. However the hdmi setting on the tv input is greyed out and won't allow me to access it so o can connect my iPhone to the tv using the Lightning digital AV adapter
Hi there, it is possible that your TV will only "ungray" that HDMI option after you actually plug some cable on that input and the TV detects there is something turned on there. Just try :)
Hi all, Can you please help me, I’ve try to restore my Apple TV 2nd generation, I’ve lost the remote and I downloaded the Apple TV remote app but is not working; I’ve trying on iPad and iPhone 8 Plus but the remote app still not recognise the Apple TV: please help
you mr. detour, are the wizard of common sense. didn't know what to do next - apple tv was just not responding. so i unplugged everything. kind of like rebooting your whole house. i echo pain's words. nice job. sir.
It is so obvious, isn’t it? And yet, it is easy to get accustomed to having those devices working nonstop 24x7... but ANY computer eventually gets into trouble and restarting makes the trick 🤣
I have my Apple TV connected to my receiver I can mirror certain apps from my phone to the tv and some I can’t.... I can’t stream videos online from my phone to my Apple tv either why is this ? I only get the audio
Hello Jose! I think you are trying to play DRM content (Digital Rights Management) and it is not working via AirPlay... I think there is not much you can do. Since you have an Apple TV, have you tried to use the Apple TV native Apps? Like, using Apple TV’s Netflix app instead of trying to mirror the one from your phone.
I need help please, ASAP, everything is working fine except that when i tap apple tv on my phone it won't show the "mirroring" button... Yes they're both connected to the same wifi
ASAP! Do you have an iPhone 4? The iPhone 4 can stream videos and music - but it cannot do mirroring via AirPlay. Only the iPhone 4S and newer can mirror via AirPlay. You can check it in the beginning of this page: support.apple.com/en-us/HT204289
Supply Chipmunk do you have an Apple TV around? AirPlay appears when the iPhone detects an Apple TV around. If you have an Apple TV, you need to follow all I've shown on the video.
Well... You know what beta means right? It is something that is still being made, changed, corrected. Don't be mad at me. You have two options: wait for each update until a point it will get back working properly; or restore iOS 9.
+John Colon ple-ple-pleeease don't get mad! I have two iPads for this purpose: one for development where I can test the betas and one that is really for my personal use (which usually stays one update behind just in case). At least are you enjoying the new iOS?
I need help cause I'm sitting directly opposite the Apple TV, I've done everything but the AirPlay button doesn't show! I don't get why tho because everything is normal.
Hello AnimeLover12! You should religiously do ALL the steps in the video (closing all apps in the Apple TV, restarting... doing the same on the iPhone/iPad... enabling bluetooth - follow the whole recipe). Also, the Apple TV must be turned ON. If the AirPlay button doesn't apear then, you should take it to the Apple Store form them to check.
Well, my MacBook pro connected me to this youtube vid. Not very helpful with a MacBook. No help at all, in fact. Where the heck is the airplay icon on my 2013 MacBook which has been upgraded to High Sierra OS? Or do I need an even newer OS? I have been trying to get everything working on High Sierra for over a year and it still does not work. I REALLY do not want move up toMojave or something without even getting the OS working yet on the lower OS's.
Hi there! Yeah, this video was all about AirPlay on iOS. About the Mac: AirPlay mirroring works from Mountain Lion on... My MacBook Pro 2011 runs Catalina (non officially, it uses the DosDude1 Patch) and I can make videos from RU-vid play on the Apple TV using AirPlay, although I cannot do “Mirroring” of the screen.
Your MacBook Pro 2013 can run even the latest OSX: Catalina. Unless you need some specific OLD software (like I do, so I keep a separate bootable partition with El Capitan), I see no reason for you to not upgrade to Catalina.

Checked in ATV4? Really? I bought this one today and it doesn't work. www.apple.com/es/shop/product/H9139VC/B/kanex-atv-pro-x-duplicaci%C3%B3n-de-airplay-para-proyectores-vga
Oh, hey +SittingNow, the brave first commenter of my favorite video so far!!! I am glad you liked it and thanks a lot for the encouragement! Have a great 2016!
+SittingNow I have a question: have you watched it after trying to actually fix your Apple TV? (of course, no problems if you were just enjoying the modeling clay stuff)
Do you have two TVs? It is possible to have more than one Apple TV connected to the same Wifi network (you can customize the 'name' of each one on settings) - I have 2 apple TVs here at home.
I wasn’t even sure Apple TV 2nd gen had AirPlay 🤣 (but it has, it is mentioned In this page: support.apple.com/en-us/HT202157 ). It would be all the same: if you have AirPlay problems, reset your iPhone/iPad, turn off and on both your Wifi/router/network boxes AND Apple TV. Be sure. To update the Apple TV software.
I have the Apple TV 2nd gen, and an iPhone 7 Plus... my problem is when I hit “screen mirroring” on my phone it just says “searching for Apple TV”, but it never comes up.
Yes. I disconnected and then reconnected both phone and Apple TV to the same WiFi and both had strong connections. I also put the phone right next to the device so it would be easier to picl up and still nothing... update.. hardwired Apple TV to my computer and restored it to factory from there.. works fine now
My Airplay get disconnected in every 30 minutes, what could be the reason, i am using 3rd gen, tried with new other same gen but still same issue persist, could you please suggest?
I think you might be facing Wifi difficulties... maybe there are too many wifi networks in your area and your Router/Wireless station keeps switching channels trying to find a less used one (maybe it is the case of setting one manually, at least you wouldn't be dropped so often). It is just a hint, I am no expert in wifi configuration.
You have an iPad Thank you for the info. I even tried with lan connection in the both device, but still disconnected while on Airplay, video streaming through ATV itself is fine. I don't know may be internet that i am using causing this issue, not sure.
Hi Aayush, I really appreciate that you introduced this subject of "AirPlay dropping" - it seems I must investigate more about it. BUT, please, I think you might benefit from trying to set your Wifi into a less crowded channel. Read about it here: www.howtogeek.com/197268/how-to-find-the-best-wi-fi-channel-for-your-router-on-any-operating-system/
Hi Fassol. I am don't know how to help you. Miracast is a different standard than AirPlay. On iOS, all apps will work with AirPlay... developers must adapt their apps to additionally support Miracast. I don't have any Chromcast neither Miracast dongles/devices, so, I don't know any practical advice. If you want to read more, I found an article about it: www.pocket-lint.com/news/133437-miracast-explained-how-is-it-different-from-chromecast-and-airplay
Hi there, you messaged me asking if i only had apple tv and ipad, and yes ,all i had was an ipad and apple tv so the video didnt really make sense to me. But as i said , it was probobly very usefull to people who had all the things
I'm trying to play video from my iPhone from an app.. When selecting the Apple TV it plays the file but only audio and no video how can I fix this? I have to play it by mirroring the iPhone which works but the audio is then slightly out of sync. I've tried air playing other things too but still end up having to mirror the iPhone again to get it to work. Just end up burning all my battery..hope someone can help
+You have an iPad yes I've tried this but seems to be a problem that's everywhere but with no fix. It's a 3rd generation. I've read that it's with the iOS 9 update that was the issue but I don't know if that's correct
Hi. Maybe it is something specific to one App. Have you tried, for instance, AirPlaying a video from the RU-vid App? I say it because videos inside of the Facebook app basically don't work for me. All the other apps go fine: Plex, videos from the Camera Roll, RU-vid, Netflix... Videos from Safari (well, it depends on the video).
Anyone know how to fix this: I’m playing a video on my iPhone, I screen mirror to my tv, it works but as soon as I want to play that video in full screen it changes to airplay and I get a black screen witch keeps buffering while the video appears on my iPhone to be playing . Any idea on how to fix this? I have the same problem on every tv in my house, screen mirroring works, it plays with sound all nicely but I cannot play it in full screen. All on the same WiFi network, mobile data on my iPhone off and connected to the same WiFi.
I’ve been having a problem. I have the Apple TV 4th. Lately every time I go to mirror my iPad Pro to my tv, it does mirror, but when I go and find a movie to watch or you tube video to watch, when I click to make full screen my iPad turn black and it will not show anything on my tv, so as soon as I minimize the screen back to small, it’s back on the tv. Anyone know why this is happening? Ty it’s so annoying not being able to watch anything in full screen on my tv! I’ve got 46inch on my wall, but feels like I’m watching a 32inch! Grrr
Oh wow! I think you have fixed my problem!just did what you said, and it seemed to fix the full screen problem! Thanks so much! Fingers crossed going to try and watch a movie now! I was able to watch your video in full screen. Thank you! 😺
Not having the AirPlay button is the normal thing - it appears when you have an Apple TV around. It is even possible that, if your neighbor has an Apple TV, the icon appears for you (depending on how close you are, through the walls). Actually, this poses a different problem :)
Do you mean that it's no not a problem?? But today morning when I where going to the with my friend it was shown! Do it appears when I'm setting near another iPhone?
I don't have a Apple TV but my Problem is that my airplay mirroring isn't working I accidentally turned it off and now it doesn't show it to turn it back on
The "AirPlay" option only appears when the iPhone/iPad detects an Apple TV nearby. Sometimes the iPhone detects the Apple TV from a neighbor house :) "AirPlay" is the Apple technology to stream video/audio wirelessly to the Apple TV.
Geek Detour I don't want it to connect to a Apple TV but just for AirShou which is app to record your screen and I accidentally pressed something that made it disappear and it doesn't show up the Airplay Mirroring button.
If you want to "surf", you need a "surfboard" - if you want to mirror your iPhone/iPad to your television without cables ("AirPlay"), you need an Apple TV connected to your Television (the Apple TV is the AirPlay receiver).
Oh my gosh, Your so creative these videos are amazing you deserve so many subscribers! This is really helpful. Thank you (i must wonder how you got the idea of a clay set and how long did it take you?)
Thank you Zahid! Very kind words, I appreciate! :) It is so hard to understand how ideas come to life... I guess, in this case, it is because my house is not exactly "clean and spacious"... so, I had the idea to make a miniature set. Oh, man... the "TV" alone took me one night! It is made of a wooden frame and modelling clay is only a thin cover over it. The entire video took about two weeks... (but I have many interruptions... I could do it only a few hours every day). Thats it! :)
Hi +Freak Sneak BTD Battles and more. It might sound silly, but, when you see the AirPlay name... have you tried dragging it a bit to the top? Sometimes the "mirror" option is just under the bottom part of the screen.
Hi BeanToast, out of curiosity, could the "mirroring" option be hidden, just a bit down? try swiping up and see if it is bellow the visible part of the box (are you using an iPad?)
Have you noticed my Modeling Clay Television is actually a "green screen" prop, like in the movies? I inserted the Apple TV images over this prop using chroma key in Final Cut. But, FIRST, I needed to RECORD, CAPTURE the Apple TV output so I could use it later... I just made a video about Capturing the Apple TV screen output: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bKdywr7VeWI.html
In the beginning of the video i thought it was my sensors and actuators topic😂. I like how you explain how the system works so the problem can be understood and solved 👍
It works fine but some websites for movies dont work as good as RU-vid and some are lagging I did all the steps and didn’t work Tried my Mac pro, iphone and ipad all the same Before it was working fine on these websites
Please, try doing ALL the steps on the video. The AirPlay button only appear when the iPhone detects an Apple TV turned ON, on the same network as the iPhone.
That is exactly how it is supposed to work: the Airplay button only appears when there is an Apple TV around that you can stream to. If this is what happens with your iPhone, everything is just fine! :)
Still having trouble with my AirPlay mirroring, sometimes it works and sometimes not. Sometimes it just kicks me off...weird. To fully disclose, I have an iPad 2 very old model & Apple TV 3rd gen. Probably just need to upgrade.
Hi angelinajoanie, have you tried doing all the steps in the video? (closing all running apps and rebooting the iPad is exactly the same as I showed with the iPhone in the video)
+You have an iPad you are not going to believe this, I figured out what was wrong, so simple you will laugh. My iPad was on a different WiFi network than the Apple TV!! Everything works now. That was the last thing you said on the video, "make sure everything is on the same network". Thanks for your help :)
Ok, let me get this straight. The Airplay icon WILL NOT appear on my iPad, iPhone or Mac...UNLESS it finds an Apple TV? Here's the thing, and I'll try to be concise. I don't see any AirPlay icon in these devices: -iPhone 4 version 7.1.2(I know...I can't update any more) -iPad 3 version 9.2 -Macbook Pro Mid 2012 version 10.9.5 (Mavericks, since I refused to update to Yosemite and El Capitan) So...is the fact that I don't have the latest update in all devices what's causing the icon not to show up? Or is it just because I don't have an Apple TV just yet? Since my brother's iPhone 5(updated to iOS 9.2) has the icon and we live in the same house so it cannot detect any other devices that I don't already have. What do you think is the problem here? Since, like I said, the fact that my brother's iPhone DOES have the icon and none of my other devices does, really has me intrigued...and a bit annoyed, too, since I know the iPad should, at least, have it...and the Macbook Prop should also have the icon and is nowhere to be seen. Been to almost every forum I could find and no definitive answer at all. I'm asking because I want to purchase the Apple TV 4th gen and I wouldn't want to be surprised by the fact I can't mirror anything from my devices...I know the iPhone 4 won't work, but the iPad and Mac should, so I don't want to purchase the thing and just waste my money. Thanks in advance.
Hi +viewson83, thank you for writing! You got it: you NEED an Apple TV (or another AirPlay host). The AirPlay button appears ONLY when the iPhone/iPad/iMac detects there are an AirPlay capable device nearby (ex: Apple TV, an AirPort Express, AirPlay enabled Speakers, etc). When I take my iPhone and iPad with me on the street, the AirPlay button goes away. I also have an iPad 3rd gen and the AirPlay button appears when I am home - then I can choose between one of my two Apple TVs to send videos or do mirroring. If your brother's iPhone shows the AirPlay button in the absence of an Apple TV/AirPlay host, well... that is really weird. Are you sure your brother doesn't use a jailbroken device with some mod that makes the AirPlay button appear all the time? Or it could be that your brother has bluetooth enabled on his iPhone (and you don't) and his iPhone could be detecting a neighbour's AppleTV (yes, it is possible to have 'pear-to-peer' AirPlay without being on the same wifi network - this is a subject of a future video on my channel). I hope it helps :)
+You have an iPad Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, my brother may have had his bluetooth connection on, then, and it must've picked up a neighbour's Apple TV. Whoa, thanks SO MUCH for clearing that up since I was getting worried my devices wouldn't work with the Apple TV.
viewson83 Even your iPhone 4 will probably stream videos using AirPlay (it doesn't do mirroring, though... mirroring starts on the iPhone 4S). Hey, you are welcome!
Hi there! Well, this video is about fixing AirPlay, which is sending video from the iPhone/iPad to the Apple TV. You only have the Apple TV, no iPhone right? So, which problem were you trying to fix?
I wish! 😁 Back when I began this channel, I was developing Apps for iOS and I was always having the latest iPhone, latest iPad, Apple TV to test apps… (and there were fewer models). So it made sense for me to make videos with tips and tricks focused on the Apple universe. Now, all my Apple devices are old 😜 My focus shifted to DIY/Maker/Arduinos/3D Printers. I still am an Apple Heavy-User 🍎, only with 4+ years old hardware 🤣
Hi Denis, can you give us more details? Maybe I can help you :) Which iPhone/iPad model you have, which Apple TV is yours... exactly what are you trying to do that doesn't work?
Hi Crafting, thank you for clarifying. Yeah, what I do in the iPhone part would still apply: closing all apps, rebooting, enabling bluetooth and be sure the iPhone and the Computer are both in the same Wifi. Check the troubleshoot guide on the Squirrels website: help.airsquirrels.com/support/solutions/articles/1000173738-why-isn-t-airplay-showing-up-on-my-ios-device-
What I like about your videos (once I got through the KFC fricking chicking, you ring, we bring, Chicken Lickin' ad) is that you keep them simple and to the point with no useless BS. Again, thank you and keep up your helpful work.
Thank you so much, Wayne! Kind words that help me go forward - well, together with the KFC fricking chicking, you ring, we... whatever ad Google decides to put in the beginning. A (specially not known) RU-vidr must eat! :)
The new Apple TV is a hit! And the AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring got much more stable and faster on the 4th generation device! Even so, problems can happen still. It can be some weirdness on your router, or the iPhone itself... so many things there is a very nice support page about it at Apple: support.apple.com/en-us/HT204291 Oh, I am glad you asked! Yes, making modelling clay stuff for a tutorial is indeed a sick and tiresome idea... I loved making it - but it is something ONLY for special occasions smile emoticon Don't insist! NO! I won't make it again!... well, maybe. Happy 2016!!!
I cant turn on my apple tv I just moved from a knew hose and I wanted to see somthing in my apple tv and it did not turn on I need help make amthor vedo pls
Hello Silvia - I don't know how to help you... Hard to know what is happening: try to remove the power plug and firmly insert it again (are you sure the outlet on the new house is working/has power?). Check the HDMI cable again, etc. Maybe you can ask a friend who likes setting up equipment to help you :)
To Reboot your iPhone XR you do: (on the side buttons, on the left) Volume Up, Volume Down (then on the right side) Hold the Power Button until the Apple Logo Appears. Here is a video showing how to do it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T_KN8p94D1Q.html
+Jerrposition Thank you! I really appreciate! :) Oh, yes, I swear I am doing it! Making real-life videos is kind of time-consuming: researching a subject and writing a clear text with tips that actually work for most people... then setting up a good looking scenario, placing lights, recording each individual takes that emphasizes what you want people to focus on... Then, edit everything using only the best material :) Ha ha ha (for this video alone I have 32 GB of short individual video takes). Later, I create closed captions in English, Spanish and Portuguese. It kinds of... takes a while to finish every video!
The iPhones, Macs, iPads and Apple TVs are awesome and I consider them very reliable… but because these devices are kept constantly “ON” most of the time, every now and then weird unexpected things happen… “Why is networking weird??” “Airplay is weird” “Sound is weird!”…. So, the fix for many of these weird problems is learning how to actually close all the running apps and force a full hardware reboot on each of our devices. The specific way to do it might change on each model, but it will continuing being the solution for many problems when “weird” things happen.
Oddly enough, every now and then, I still need to do the same routine: restart everything, kill every running app, reboot the iPhone. It just changed a bit how to reboot and where the buttons are.
I don't know if anyone one else is having this problem but the AirPlay works much more better and fast on my Apple TV 3 then my Apple TV 4. You would think that it would work better on newer technology
I cant believe it Geek I still cant get mine to air play today worked the week I bought it . I tried all you said still blank screen . I am using it for same thing as my roku box watch netflix and u tube . and it was only 39$ 5 years ago .
If it is still under warranty period, maybe you should take it to an Apple Store and check if it is really OK or if it needs to be replaced. Good luck!
