Ah, very good observation. And I just looked at mine and you're exactly right that the tabs/rails from the top cap don't go all the way down into the plate that has the safety bars. However, even if they extended them down into it, I think that might create other problems. But with more work, they might be able to address them. I'm sure these problems are hashed over for hours and even days, when vendors try to make a good adjustable!

With both of the razors that I have had, I have asked the company, pearl. When I ordered mine, it was a thing about just emailing the company instead of any kind of online order cart. So in those email exchanges, I asked.

It would be nice if they put up some sort of data table with a range of serial numbers so that we just look it up!

I don't know of any serial numbers on the one I have. Might be hard to pin down if the guy selling it to you doesn't know. I'll look on my seventh generation and see as well.

It's common with the DE89, and the other clones like it, such as the parkers and merkurs, and bailis. They are cast zinc alloy and can't be made to such tolerances that lock the blade into exact alignment. So they have to leave a little wiggle room, and you have to check it each time.

@@sgrdddyshaves Thanks for confirming that with those models I always have to check the alignment and stop fighting about the warranty 😉. So with a high-end stainless steel razor the adjustment of the blade will be better. I'm new in this world of the classic shave (one week) and have seen some nice safety razors , I like the Tatara Masamune, the Feather AS-D2 and the Edwin Jagger 3ONE6. Greetings.

@@Francisco-MH here's a bit of advice. It's easy to drop hundreds of dollars on premium razors. However, if your technique isn't really well established, and by that I mean technique with the razor as well as with generating a good lather, then you likely won't see a ton of improvement with all that money spent. With the de-89, you've got a solid razor there. So I would just use it for a few months before jumping into other purchases. For instance, the feather asd-2 is on the other end of the spectrum from the 316. That model feather is super mild. And you don't really know what you like quite yet. One exception I might make is if you find a great deal on some vintage razors on ebay. Sometimes you can get five of them for $25, and while it's possible that you may get one that's a little messed up, my experience has shown that in general the vintage ones are pretty hard to beat up. Especially the vintage Gillette tech. Those are a dime a dozen and sometimes you can get one for 7 to 10 dollars. And that would be a great razor to play around with and switch back and forth from your de-89 as you figure out which one you might like better. If your person like me who enjoys variety, then being able to experiment with a few vintage pieces for not much money can satiate that need while you wait for your skills to get up to par. And then once your technique is better, then you can make a good educated guess as to a premium razor to purchase, and more so, you'll be in the place where you will be able to appreciate the differences that it offers. Take your time, and enjoy the journey!

I was able to contact the customer service at Pearl shaving very close to the time when my razors were being shipped to me and so they were able to tell me directly. But, both of my razors have a serial number on them and so perhaps if you send that serial number in to customer service they can tell you which generation it is. And I believe if you just bought your razor, then you could probably send in your order number or something like that and they may be able to tell you as well
