Apple Watch 1st Gen 38mm (A1553) (Purchase Date: May 2016) initial battery swelled and popped screen in less than 3 years. Due to the number of defects, Apple extended the warranty on this issue from 2 to 3 years, so they replaced it for free (March 2019). That replacement has now failed again (June 2023) but it did last another 4 years (longer than the original). Now Apple doesn't even offer Series 1 battery service. Check online: support.apple.com/en-ca/watch.... So you are basically on your own to buy a 3rd party battery replacement kit online for $25 and do it yourself!
