My challenge today, is to repair my vintage British Rail Intercity 125, and add some weight so it can haul 5 Passenger cars up my mountain.

Nicely done, Dave. Two things: First, you need to redo the opening credits now that you have a proper Rio Grande Alco to pull the coaches. Ha ha. Second, when adding weights to an obviously underweight loco, test the loco before putting the shell back on to see if it can manage the additional weight. It's a bit of trial and error. Wheel weights work for me. Keep up the excellent work!

I barely got back to the hobby a few months ago, and this is my first passenger train. Also, I replaced the traction tires to silicone traction tires that I got on eBay and they work really well.

Great job!. I myself always wanted to get the earlier made intercity sets that were of the blue/grey paint scheme...but they are so hard to find affordably now,lol.

Another good job. Watch the weight. I don't know if that much might wear on the motor.

Hi mate you could get a spare HST power car with motor on flee bay or even hattons in Liverpool they export don’t matter if it’s not the right livery just swap the bodies then you’ll have ample power for your incline and they are cheap mate or get a spare ringfield BO motor bogie all the parts you can use add red tail lights too nice 😊 Al the best Mark 😊😊

Good going, sir. That's an early LIMA version of the Ringfield motors and was interesting to see; most of the ones I've seen are the Hornby versions. Keeping an eye on the RC Cars and Plane scene can be fruitful for some spares. Nice work with the LED's. So many of these units could use a bit extra weight to get better traction, for sure. Nice video, Dave. Keep Safe now! Lastly, HAPPY NEW YEAR! All The Best!

I can't remember where I heard this but try this: to keep the tabs from relocking, try putting a piece of busines card or similar thickness stock in between the shell and each tab after you unlock them.

I go with your decision not to remove the motors brass cog. You lose friction between the cog and shaft each time you do so. Also agree with marksinthehouse's earlier comment.. get another power chassis for the rear car (means two decoders later down the track tho.)

I just want to give a bit of advice on lubricant. Use of petroleum based lube will cause your plastics to fail prematurely. The petroleum will interfere with the polymer chains of the plastic, as the plastics are also petroleum based. Just a helpful hint if you want the gears and power trucks to last longer. 👍

Thanks. I used Labelle 107 synthetic for this one.

I`m now selling off my old Hornby 125. you could body swap the virgin power car reverse the feeders and run a power car both ends, I`m doing the same with a Lima 125 set. I picked up a seperate power car,so it will be power driven both ends.

Hello, Scott, first of all, Happy New Year 2024, the Inter City 125 is a great collectable set from GB, pancake motors are not the best with a 3-pole, the best ones are a 5-pole pancake, I do have a 3 pole motor on a Campell set I'm trying to get the rest of freight cars that go with it got engine and 1 box car, cheers keep those fix-it Friday coming I keep learning every time.

There's a much easier way to do this using bi-directional bulbs. I just found them on ali express.

I love to watch you clean the bogies the difference is amazing. I was wondering though if you can turn the brushes over to the flat side?
@ScottRails
@ScottRails 7 месяцев назад
The brushes have a conical shape on the spring side, which presumably is like that for the springs to locate. There is also less surface area on that side of the brush, so might make a difference with power feed.

Well done my friend.... now lets see how fast it does go and if the carriages need some weight or not.. hahahhahaaaaa..... BTW did you find out where the coupling fitted with that weird coupling thingymabobsy at the back of the motor there.....
@ScottRails
@ScottRails 7 месяцев назад
No, I instantly forgot to look at the coupling, lol.
@stephengault8754
@stephengault8754 7 месяцев назад
Coupling hooks were never fitted to the HST loco. Newer models have them fitted but yours doesn’t. The magnet in the motor will have picked it up. I’ve literally just watched another restoration job where he pulled a hook from the engine, like yours it was the likely culprit for making it a non runner. Well done getting it apart and put back together!
@ScottRails

Thank so much for that info. I could have spent hours trying to figure out how to add a coupler, lol.
