Fix Leak behind the Siding at the Outdoor Faucet / Spigot and Sillcock Replacement with Hose Hanger

This video shows our outdoor faucet. When the spigot started leaking behind the siding after a winter freeze. Frozen pipes are big in Texas right now. This is what I did to fix the faucet by replacing the frost-free sillcock valve. While I was at it, I showed how I placed a Garden Hose Hanger over the newly longer installed faucet or spigot. I looked online and in the local stores and could not find a frost-proof hose bib as short as the one I have in my home. My solution for the issue is in the video, also Melody, my wife, interacts with me throughout the video which made this project much more fun. Hope you enjoy
Have a blessed day!

Not just helpful, but extra entertaining to have the unscripted interaction of both you and your wife involved in the vid. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! The spot where your pipe cracked (did I just say "crack pipe," lol) is nearly at the same spot as ours. Great video!

I’ve got the same exact issue. Glad I found someone who had the same problem, and confirm what needed to be done to fix it. 👍

I have water pouring down the inside of the siding then dripping rapidly to the ground from the siding lower edges. Your video makes me think the faucet piping near the exterior froze and cracked. I appreciate your video very much.

Too bad I didn't see this sooner. I had both of my outdoor faucets replaced but I wasn't brave enough to tackle that project so I hired someone to do those. Thankfully, I know how to patch up the holes they made in the wall. We could've helped each other out on this one haha.

Same thing happened to me last week up here in Boston. It’s because I kept the hose connected which apparently prevents the water from fully draining, and it freezes, bursting the pipe. Pain in the butt !!

Nice job especially the hose hanger if the builders had left you a shut off valve the bib wouldn't have cracked. I have the same issue

Yea I'm really surprised they didn't add a valve. When he said he had to shut off the water main to do the repair I was like "whaaaaa????"

Wow, great video. Thank you! I think I have the EXACT same problem right now with water flowing down from behind the siding when i turn it on. The challenge for me right now is that there is a heavy upright piano where I need to tear the drywall and I just don't have the time to move it right now. Question for you: In your case as shown in this video, knowing where the puncture (leak) is located on the faucet, would the water have continued to drip out if you had just left it? Do u think it would've caused a mold issue if you had just left it as is for, say, 6 months? I'm not a home building expert, so I don't know what's immediately behind the siding and what's there, if any, to protect my interior from mold. I guess I just want your take on whether I need to drop everything this instant and get this fixed, or mold will start invading the inside of my home. Again, my question is assuming the exact same problem as shown in this video. Not holding you responsible for your opinion, thank you.

Did you have to let the insulation dry out first before covering the dry wall?

You can do this without a hole In the wall. Unscrew the old faucet buy new one, put Teflon and screw back in.

Not if you don’t know that it’s a screw-on. My outside spigot is tight up against the brick exterior, and I don’t know whether it’s welded on or screwed on, so I have to cut a hole in the interior wall to find out.

@@leeb.7188 I thought about that after the fact. I was lucky enough to twist it generously but carefully and came loose. Rather easy. Good luck

Thanks for the video. I am currently having the same issue and have a question for you: Did you notice the problem when you used the hose or have you seen some water damage in the house that made you aware of the issue? I found out about our problem when I turned on our hose. Hose pressure was low and in about 20 seconds water started to come from behind our siding. This also caused some wet carpeting in the rooms behind the spigot. I have not seen the piping yet, but the problem seems to stop when I turn off the spigot. Is this similar to your experience. Thanks again.

It was when the hose was turned on. The split is after the seat from the valve. Their is a close up of it in the video. That put the leak inside of the middle of the wall only when I turned on the valve. Hope that helps. =) Have a blessed day.

The wall behind my faucet is my cement foundation. I just had a guy replace the spigot last summer and turned it on yesterday and water is coming from behind my siding. So frustrated

the faucet that failed was not frost proof, correct?

What if you cannot access from the inside of the house (bath tub is on the other side). Also, the house is brick so can't easily access from outside.

Personally I suggest calling a certified plumber at that point, I would not try to replace the valve myself unless I know for sure it does not leak in the wall after. Best of luck on this Emily, and have a blessed day.

Did you have an ho3, ho4 or ho5 policy? Freeze is a coverable loss and you may have had a payable claim. It depends on the amount of your deductible. This video would be proof of loss. And they would still owe to repair the interior professionally.

To bad you put the Teflon tape backwards. The way you did it could cause a premature leak.
