Glad I saw your hint about the Allen key and rubber mallet. Damage-free disassembly!

Excellent instructions with many helpful tips. I have *extremely* hard water and the handle was getting close to being frozen up. I'll make it a point to take it apart and descale it regularly from now on. The only thing that you didn't mention, although by watching closely you can see it in the video: the tightness of the big nut determines how easy or stiff the handle action will be. I tightened it too much the first time, and could barely move the handle. Taking it all apart I figured out that the big nut was the determining factor. A little bit of trial and error by slipping the handle on to test it let me find the sweet spot.

Glad that you mentioned the calcification and the difficulty of getting the faucet apart. Great idea to spray with vinegar and to soak the parts in vinegar to remove the calcification. After removing the screw, I couldn't get the handle off and thought I was missing a step, but no, it was the calcification that was acting as glue holding that in and all it needed was vinegar spray and a rubber mallet! Got it off...yay. Thanks for showing us that not everything goes according to plan.

This video was a great help. I had trouble removing the plastic collar piece. To help get a grip on it I wrapped duct tape around it, that helped the wrench grip the piece - then it came off easily.

It was really helpful to see how much force was needed to get that handle off. I probably would have wrecked the whole thing if I didn't see how you did it. Much appreciated!

Yeah... it was a lot of force. I was kind of at the point that I was either going to get that handle off or buy a new faucet.

Dead on perfect instructions. Thank you for sharing and for letting the rest of us learn from your process. The larger Allen wrench used to act as a wedge worked like a charm for me. I placed the larger Allen wrench tip at the back side of the handle and used my palm to strike the the handle. Thank you again!

Thanks for the very clear instructions! Your tip on how to remove the handle is priceless! I had a sense of how to replace the valve, but I was struggling with how to get the handle off without breaking it! And confirmation of the part number was also really helpful. Thanks!

You're very welcome. I too struggled getting that handle off. At one point I resigned myself to, "I'm either getting this handle off or buying a new faucet!"

Your tip on what to do if the handle is stuck worked great. We didn’t need the rubber mallet, as tapped with my hand and broke the calcium up. Also used Norwex Descaler to remove the calcium build up. Not as toxic as other descalers. Your tips were even better than the Kohler video on the same topic. Thank you!

You said the Allen set screw for the handle is 2.5mm; Kohler actually says 3/32" they are very close but maybe the reason why the allen screw was initially hard to engage is not calcification but that the 2.5 is a hair bigger than 3/32 and a very tight fit. But overall this was VERY helpful.

I started with the Kohler video so I had the correct 3/32 Allen wrench. It was still really hard to turn because of all the hard water scale.

Make sure that you don't over tighten the 7/8" nut when reassembling. First clue that it is over tight will be that the handle is hard to move. I found that it was trial and error in how tight I turned it trying to recreate the resistance of the handle before taking it apart. Hope that this is helpful to others!

I discovered the same. Watching that part of the video closely you can see him testing the square plastic piece when tightening the nut.

Great instructions, but use a thin wood skewer instead of Allen key to prevent damage when using the rubber mallet.

I have the same issue with this faucet. It was very hard to remove the collar/scutcheon. Its all marred and messed up. Were you able to find a new one to buy? As for the cartridge I am still not able to remove it since its set in there like glued in place. The 7/8' socket didn't fit properly so I tried the open wrench and still could turn that nut. I will get it out even if I have to saw it off. Just ordered the parts but couldn't find the finishing collar. Thank you!

I put some blue thread locker on the grub screw and the lock nut threads to seal them from water ingress. Makes servicing it next time painless.

what if my handle squeeks and is somewhat hard to turn. Is it because I have to replace that same part you replace? or it just needs some cleaning with the parts all out?

I can't find it in my notes. But I did a bit of digging and I THINK one of these will work. Seems like there is a wide price range based on color. www.us.kohler.com/us/catalog/productDetails.jsp?productId=1378728&skuId=1520502 Old PN is: K-1217605- New PN is: K-1331881-
