I used Vanness Pens White Lightning Ink Additive to make a super dry ink write wetter and more consistently. Since this video is the first of many, I spent some time showing my process of diluting a sample of ink with the additive. I hope you enjoy!
I purchased a bottle of White Lightning here: vanness1938.co...

Fascinating experiment. Briefly summarize dry vs wet inks please, how does one distinguish the difference?

@@mshaunplans …I’m too old caring if I sound clueless. I’m intrigued with inks, particularly like shading and want to understand RU-vid reviewers. 🤔😆

My interpretation of dry ink is that they're not as free-flowing. For instance, I consider Pilot Iroshizuku a wet ink. I find many Noodler's inks to be dry and opaque as you right on the page.
@edwardrutledge2765
@edwardrutledge2765 Год назад
@@PlanBudgetDisney …do wet inks shade better than dry, and do pigment inks shade less well than dye based? I’m a shading fan, agree and understand your Iroshizuku ink characteristics. I find Sailor Studio nice flowing , many great shaders too.

Thanks for watching! Typically, wet inks flow easily from the nib to the paper. Dry inks can sometimes be difficult to use (they may skip while writing) unless you have wet writing pens. I’ll develop a video about this soon!

I recently had an experience with a FWP in a particular pen (VP Decimo) that was unlike any other experience with this ink in other pens. Funnily enough, one of the pens it happened to write well in was the Kakuno. Your video gives me food for thought. Need to get a bottle of white lightening and experiment. Btw, I, too, would love a video on wet vs dry inks.

Thanks for watching! The Pilot Kakuno really is impressive. And yes, White Lightning has already proven its worth for me. Got it, wet/dry inks video coming soon.

Hey Kristen! I researched „dry inks“ a while ago and actually found a simple fix (I think on Reddit). Taking a toothpick and dipping the tip into dawn dish soap and then into the filled ink cartridge or converter is all it needs. It reduces the surface tension and makes it „wetter“.

Hey, thanks for the tip! 💕 I’d heard that many use this solution with great success, and I’m sure it’s more cost effective than White Lightning. I really wanted an option that was developed with fountain pens in mind so that I wouldn’t have to worry incessantly about whether or not certain chemicals/ingredients will degrade fountain pen materials over time.

Thanks for the video. I personally prefer the ink mix you had w/ Grape. I find it tough to read w/ your kakuno even after the whitelightening. . Your first part w/ the juicy TWISBY is good though. Looking forward to some of your other experiments. I accidentally ruined a bottle (half full) of Sailor Ha Ha using white ligtning. I had thought the eyedropper cap was empty, and just was going to stir the ink... It's crazy/ugly with the ink fleeing your fountain pen so I rec. staying w/ your measured approach. You can also use those coffee stirrers.

Oooo yeah, I’m glad that I was cautious while testing White Lightning. I do like the contrast better when I mixed in some Grape, but I seem to be hard to please when it comes to some colors. I want the color of Little Robinia but with the legibility of the mixed inks. I still haven’t found the perfect color, but I’m having plenty of fun just exploring with the inks currently in my collection. Thanks for watching!

I thought that the ink not sticking to the sides of the vial was a good attribute. Did not know that that signified a dry ink. Thank you!
@lifeinspiresdesign
@lifeinspiresdesign 11 месяцев назад
Glad it was helpful! If the ink performs more like water in the vial (it beads up rather than coating the sides), it is potentially a dry ink, or at least not a very wet one. But also keep in mind the ones that stick to the vial (ALMOST) like honey; that type of viscosity can be a problem in some drier writing pens. You’re likely to get hard starts from those combos.

This was very interesting-I didn’t know about White Lightening. When you experienced the ink becoming dryer the longer you wrote, I’m guessing the ink was drying out on the nib and restricting ink flow the longer the nib was exposed to the air? Coincidentally, I just inked up a pen with Sailor Yukiakari, a too dry (for me) light blue ink.
@lifeinspiresdesign
@lifeinspiresdesign 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! When I first ink a pen, the nib and feed (often) are overloaded with ink. Once that excess is used up in the initial writing session (maybe the span of one or two paragraphs), the flow is more consistent. That is the time when I can truly judge if the ink is wet, dry, or somewhere in-between. My nibs don't tend to dry out unless I leave them uncapped and not in use (can be as short as 10-15 seconds). So if a pen is writing dry soon after I've inked it up, and I know it's not the pen's fault, I'll consider adding White Lightning to the ink. I hope this helps!

when you mix your inks how do you know they are safe to put in the pens? I love white lighting!
@taccora
@taccora Год назад
Generally speaking it's always fine to mix ink within the same brand. When you start mixing inks between brands that's usually not a problem either since they're mostly dye based (with the exception of the waterproof pigment inks). I think you have more issues when mixing Noodler's brand inks with others since the manufacturer sometimes uses special manufacturing that can possibly cause adverse reactions. That's mostly with his Baystate inks though.
