Excellent. Thank you very much. It took a while of looking to finally whihc component the latch was. I still couldn't see exactly what to move, so gave a good but not excessive quirt of light oil and then gingerly moved the only tab I could see with a very thin bladed screwdriver. Perfect repair.

I had the issue where my winder was not cocking the shutter, and shortly after this and winding the shutter and trying to fire it a few times, the shutter started to work more and more until it worked perfectly! And this is an ancient ME Super I found in a bric-a-brac shop for £5!! Thanks a ton!

I had one in working condition about to be used. Loaded up a film but after a day or so I found out it wasn’t properly installed as that rewind dial wouldn’t spin when advancing. So messing around I must’ve done something wrong as now the shutter is cocked but can’t be fired anymore and the forwarding lever has no tension at all. Hopefully this video will be a fix to my issue. I just need to find the proper screw drivers first…

I picked up this (second) ME Super cheap because the mirror was stuck and ot wouldn't crank, but the button wouldn't depress. Oddly, it seems the mirror flipped down by itself some time after installing newer batteries. I've verified this several times *shrug*. Anyway, after having the bottom off and the bits out and reassembled, I'm right nack to where I was before taking the bottom off. The crank lifts the rear shutter but doesn't engage whatever needs to be engaged for button to do anything. Then suddenly it will do something, take a shot and the mirror sticks up. It'll sit like this for some time (days) until I come back to it and put batteries in. I might come back to it an hour or later and the mirror has flipped down. You're right about being difficult to see. But I think I understand better now when this lever is.

The issue described is classic for the ME with mirror issues. This is one of the trickiest of the "work arounds" featured in some of the FOC videos. But if done properly it will work and keep the cameras going with out having to pull the mirror box and performing the complete repair.

If the mirror seems hopelessly jammed up, try this.Make sure your fingers are clean first. Take any film out and touch the shutter curtains from both sides. Move the front one UP while moving the back one Down at the same time. Front being front as you look at the front of the camera. What is happening there is having both shutter curtains fully extended Isn't happening so the shutter cycle isn't completed hence the camera doesn't appear to work or seems jammed.

rwrp Remove the top cover. The counter mechanism is fairly simple. Look for the engagement pawl to be stuck, preventing the lower counter shaft/gear from meshing with the counter dial gear.

I opened the bottom, removed the winding mechanism, and pushed the latch with a small screwdriver which caused the mirror to come down and allowed me to fully wind the advance lever. I thought I fixed it so I reattached the advance mechanism and closed the bottom of the camera. When I pressed the shutter, the latch and mirror got stuck again. Any ideas on what I should try for a long term solution?

@FixOldCameras

There is a very strong possibility that the cause of your camera malfunction is the same issue that is featured in the Fix Old Cameras video Pentax ME-Super winding issues.
@peterbarth1479
@peterbarth1479 4 года назад
I love your videos, although on most Pentax ME Super/Pentax MG cameras, the problem will not be solved like this. Rather you have to take out the mirror box and clean gummed up mirror mechanisms and replace little rubber bumpers that deteriorate over time and always need to replaced. Everything else will not work on the long term.
@FixOldCameras

A proper and complete repair is always best. Barring any other issues the camera might have such a work around will also work long term.

Thanks for the video! One question: Can you remove the bottom plate and attempt repairs without exposing any film in the camera? I am halfway through a roll of Fuji Velvia and I'd rather not waste the remainder of the roll. I was hoping I could take the plate off to see if anything was obviously jammed or misaligned without having to sacrifice the rest of my roll.
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 8 лет назад
+singhcr Probably best to be safe and remove the roll.
@michaeldimmitt2188
@michaeldimmitt2188 2 года назад
You could make a note of what frame the roll was on. Rewind the roll but leave the leader strip out and reload the same roll after the camera is fixed, then with the lens cap ON fire the shutter & advance the roll to just past where it was before the repair. Go an extra frame to make sure the older shots are not double exposed. Taping a note to the canister explaining everything to your future self helps a lot. I have done that before when I needed to switch to a different film and I did not have a backup camera with me. A poor mans switchable back camera!

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with putting back the levers in order the winding mechanism to work properly. Would you be able to recommend or describe how it is supposed to work properly? Currently when putting the levers back in the mirror is down, so when rewinding the crank the camera takes a photograph?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 8 лет назад
Look carefully at the reassemble portion of the video. The levers removed need be installed so that they are on the proper side of the mirror cocking lever and the shutter cocking lever. There job is to energize both of these mechanism during the film wind cycle.

If the mirror is stuck in the up position it usually means the shutter curtains are jammed.
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 10 лет назад
As you correctly state the mirror can lock in the up position because the shutter did not complete its release cycle, but it is not necessarily the usual cause of such a malfunction, so to make the comment a little more precise, we might substitute "can indicate" for "usually means". As well as jammed shutter curtains, there are other common causes of the Pentax ME Super's mirror being stuck in the up position. The mirror will also lock in the up position because of a malfunction in the mirror lift and release mechanism as well as a wind and cocking mechanism malfunction. Thank you so very much for your interest in Fix Old Cameras.
@zenoist2
@zenoist2 10 лет назад
I think your videos are great! Thank you for the reply. there are 3 effects in a pentax me super for it to work. I think foam falling off and jamming them up wrecks them. You could always do lots of videos of pentax ME supers if you run out of ideas.;

@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 9 лет назад
Sara Jaime If the camera is jammed, than it is possible that the 2nd shutter curtain has not completed the travel. A Fix Old Camera video featuring shutter curtain tension adjustment on a Spotmatic will be upcoming. Improper shutter tension can prevent the proper travel of the shutter curtains which in turn will not allow the camera to complete the release cycle. It is also possible that there is a broken spring in the mirror mechanism which would be a separate issue.

@FixOldCameras

@adampistawka5051
@adampistawka5051 8 лет назад
+Fix Old Cameras Is that all I'd have to do to remove the rewind lever? Do I have to remove the film speed selector retaining nut? And does selector dial need to be removed to remove the top cover?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 8 лет назад
Remove the rewind knob as a unit. The only reason to separate the rewind lever from the rewind knob is if the rewind lever is damaged and needs to be replaced. The shutter mode selector knob does NOT need to be removed in order to lift the top cover. The ASA dial that lives under the rewind knob does need to be removed.

@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 9 лет назад
+Menji Zen If you have never attempted to disassembly a camera down to its mirror box you will probably need some sort of guide. There are presently no plans for FOC to produce a video of the complete break down of such a camera. The procedure for the removal of the mirror box on all SLR cameras varies from moderately difficult and involved to very difficult and involved. The removal of the Pentax ME mirror box probably falls somewhere in the middle of the range of difficulty. But should be doable if taken in the proper steps and good tools are available. You might look for some back issues of a SPT Journal (Society Of Photo-Technologists) or The Camera Craftsman Magazine for guidance.

There are two small screws which hold the focus screen frame in place. With these screws removed you should be able to pull the focus screen frame down enough to gain access to the inside surface of the focus screen. A blower and lens cleaning brush should do the job. The focus screen fresnel lens is soft plastic and scars very easily. Do not use any lens cleaner on this surface, if there are smudges that need cleaned, use only distilled water.

HI, I had a red hot crack at this and I've watched this video a few times and just can't figure this out. Are there different versions of the Pentax ME Super with different internals or something? firstly, my lower advance/wind mechanism is slightly different (mine is all silver no black). Secondly, there seems to be components missing inside on mine compared to yours, when comparing mine to yours there is a whole mechanism missing! Thirdly, there's an extra lever and a wire that the lever pushes down that I can't see on yours. Fourthly, I can't for the life of me locate the mirror latch. I'm new to camera repairs (I did fix my pentax battery drain issue though) and I've worked on iphones replacing screens and various other parts too so I'm not totally new to tedious little electronic stuff. I;ve uploaded some pictures here if you dont mind taking a quick look! THank you: imgur.com/a/ixtCT40

Yes, there are some slight differences between later and early models. But for the most part this video technique applies. It is probably the trickiest most worrisome fiddliest technique on FOC. It takes some doing to get it done. Great caution most be taken note to inadvertently disconnect the spring. With operating an active repair shop( phototronic.biz/service ) and posting FOC videos it just does not seem possible to go to videos and pictures posted in the comments. Often they will get filtered out and the post never even shows up anyway. Your comments were found in the FOC spam file because of the picture links.Thank you for your detailed comments and it does sound like you are on the right track. Hopefully with persistence and patience you will get it figured out.
@zenoist2
@zenoist2 10 лет назад
Often by they can be got working again by setting to 1/125 and tapping at the shutter curtains or mirror so something does happen.. If you can get it to go once you need to keep going. A lot of them jam because they haven't been used for years 'like any old camera.

Why? Fix Old Camera has never produced a video featuring the complete disassembly and reassembly of any camera and never will. Fix Old Cameras produces step by step up close videos of work around repairs and basic maintenance on classic and vintage cameras. Some are more involved than others, but none are intended as complete and proper repair guides. Although you found it useless and the time you took to comment is appreciated, perhaps it is not totally useless to others. Maybe if just one little something was learned than the time was not wasted. Even if what you learned was not to watch anymore FOC videos. “time is the school in which we learn… that time is the fire in which we burn” (from ‘Calmly We Walk Through April’s Day)

The mirror/lens mount box was removed only to better show the position of the lever that needs to be addressed. If the oil is applied without exercising the lever the oil will not penetrate as readily. If the oil left to migrate as it will it might still eventually free the lever to function as it should.

This seems to have fixed the issue for me where i could wind the shutter fine every time, but quite often the shutter would not fire after winding. Thanks for the guidance! There is another spring mounting that looks just like the one in question - and is much easier to access - this is the one I thought was the right one first time round. A clue is that the metal arm attached to the wrong one is brass in colour and has like a double prong in it. Anyway, once I found the correct spring (and it is seriously tucked away!) then it worked - though it did take 4 attempts to get the winding mechanism back on correctly (if you put it on and the shutter seems jammed don't worry you probably haven't broken anything just have another go at reseating, paying attention to one of the arms underneath that acts to kind of 'unlock' the windy bit at the beginning of a wind).

Desperate because this camera is so sentimentally valuable to me.

I am a fan of this channel but not a fan of this video. More often than not you need to open up the camera to remove the degraded rubber bumper and any sticky residue on pivot point of Restitution Link A assembly (part B16). I lost count the number of times I encounter ME Super, MG bodies ruined by previous owner using way too much oil to fix this issue (probably after watching this video).

Hi there. I can't seem to get the motor drive coupling to budge at all. You don't like to use brute force for things like this but even force won't get it to shift. Ever experienced this?

Apply some heat via the tip of a soldering iron to the head of the screw. Obviously, avoid letting the hot tip come in contact with any of the plastic parts.

@@hjhk5 Late answer, but: Take top cover off, take bottom cover off. Top: Unsolder red/blue/grey/yellow wires, unsolder some wired below shutter speed selector, unscrew viewfinder from chassis, unscrew ISO dial plate. Bottom: Unsolder winder wires. Remove front leatherette, unscrew front panel screws, mirror box comes out easily.

Recently bought an ME with a stuck-up mirror (but the inside lever brings it down) and a stuck advance lever. I'll have to brave this after doing all the non-invasive suggestions. Based on the condition I think someone else had a go at it, as I found a screw under the bottom plate that looks similar to the ones you took out. Interesting, considering none of those are missing.

You will need to get light down into the cavity so you can see how to fish it back into place by pushing and separating the lever latches back into proper position. It is tricky to say the least, but can be done. Otherwise the mirror box will have to be pulled after a complete disassembly.

@FixOldCameras

If you wind the camera and hold the wind lever in the fully rotated position for a few moments and the camera winds as it should then the latch lever you attempted to lubricate is still sluggish. Give a day or two to see if the oil applied will penetrate. If not reapply. Use the least amount of oil to get results and try to be as accurate as possible in the application.

On my camera, the mechanism that you remove isn't moving at all. When you pull the film advance lever at 0:55 or 3:23 the arms of the mechanism move. When I pull on mine, the uptake reel is being spun (I opened the back of the camera to verify), but none of the arms of the mechanism in the bottom of the camera are moving. I can force them to move by pushing/pulling on them forcefully with a small screwdriver while I pull the film advance lever, but then it gets stuck "open" even if I push the lever back to home, it has no resistance when pulling it again so it's not advancing, and the mechanisms in the bottom don't return to their home position. I hope this is making sense. I couldn't find the mirror lever you worked on in this video so I'll have to tackle that another day, but I wonder if the mechanism not moving is more of my problem. Is there anything I can do to make the arms of the mechanism move as yours do? It wasn't moving before I took the camera apart and it's not moving after I put it back together.

Looking at the wind side mechanism with the bottom cover removed... it is a possibility the screw that holds the lower mechanism to the wind shaft has worked loose.

@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 6 лет назад
It would probably very helpful to you if you could get your hands on another body with a working wind mechanism so you can see how the parts go together. The motor coupling can only go on two ways. LOL... one is right one is wrong. You will notice the flat sides of the screw hole of the motor couple.

Great video. My ME Super mirror was stuck up, film advance stuck in the closed position, and shutter release moves freely, but does nothing. From this video I was able to get some oil in the general area, though as you say it's very hard to see much, without further disassembly, and now the mirror is down, which is progress, but that's it so far. By gently disengaging the film advance pawl, the film advance arm does move and make the right sound. (I also own a working ME Super.) But with the pawl engaged, the film advance arm is stuck. I notice that with the bottom plate off, when I depress the shutter release fully, the bottom end of it captures a "U" shaped thing which connects to a linkage. That linkage stays limp. Do you service these for clients? Or only for yourself?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 7 лет назад
The pivot point of the lever in question is probably still a little sluggish, more time for the oil to penetrate via migration or another application of oil might help. If you are interested in getting your camera repaired go to www.phototronic.biz/services.html and read the short blurb on classic camera repair.

@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 5 лет назад
The wind lever retainer generally can be removed with a friction pad and downward pressure from you thumb as you twist in clockwise direction. If it is stubborn... seeping alcohol around the retainer can help along with an application for a few minutes of heat from the tip of a solder iron. Be careful of the plastic parts of the camera when handling the hot soldering iron.
