Oh my god thank you. I am a beginner guitarist and I found my amp and guitar at a yard sale for 20 bucks each. With help of my teachers and dad, the guitar had been fully restored but the amp was sitting in his attic for a long time and we didn't know how to fix it because it kept connecting and disconnecting and making the same scratchy sounds each time we tried to turn the volume up. Thanks man, this rlly helped alot :)
@jackkramer1553

I had this amp and it's ridiculously easy to drop the entire speaker assembly forward, it's literally one screw on either side of the amp (the one on the left side is behind the Fender logo on the side of the amp cabinet). Then 4 screws on the top to remove the amp assembly to pull it out to access the back side of the pots to do it right. I would spray the deoxit in the back of the pot slits, twist the knobs, let it sit over night so the crap drips out, the next night spray fader lube (part of the deoxit series), let it sit overnight, so all the crap drips out, then reassemble. Takes longer, but it will work the first time, and last.

Good video- good to know it can be done without spending half an hour pulling the amp apart and putting it back together again. As a beginner at electronics there’s also always chance you’ll accidentally break something and of course the inside of amps is very dangerous! I think it would’ve worked in one go if you’d sprayed more cleaner maybe 3 times turning the pot just 3 or 4 times between sprays. So good to know I should be able to clean my amps and stereos without spending half a day pulling them apart!!

Well, to be honest, I picked a day where I could spend some time cleaning the inside of my amp head cause "all" the knobs were scratchy. I vacuumed first then sprayed DeoxIT on front and backs of the knob pots. Holy cows, worked like a charm! The guy who sold me my amp head and full stack sold it to me cheap cause of the static noise! However, I like the fact also that you can shoot the stuff in the front just by removing the knobs also. Like I said, I had "time" to do it my way, so I did it. This is good for the musician on the go! Cool vid as I needed to see this as I used DeoxIT about 20 years ago and I'd forgotten how to use it till now.....lol
@realledbetter5015
@realledbetter5015 Год назад
IMO - you are doing it more thoroughly by disassembling the amp. You just have to try be careful not to touch capacitors that may be storing dangerously high voltage. Then you can spray into the back of the pot where there is often a tiny hole, especially in the older pots. That technique worked with an older Peavey amp I have. I also disassembled a used boss blues driver that was a lot newer & the pots are so tightly sealed that it is difficult to get the cleaner in there. Wish the piece of dust making the static had as difficult a time getting into the boss pot.

if you put a conveniently sized short piece of plastic tubing over the pot shaft you can get more solution in to the pot, just don't over do it, works with those stuoid little green marshall pots.

I can't tell you how happy I was to come across this vid. I'm having the same issue with my Tascam DP-32, and also My Tech21 Ultra 1000 bass head. I was freaking out until I found out about Deoxit. So the can arrived today, and I was looking on here trying to find the correct way to do, and I saw cats taking their boards apart, and one dude was dismantling the entire amp! Didn't want to go through any of that! Then I cam across your vid..you rule! I just did a test spray on the first trim knob, now I'm waiting to see if it worked. You can make an adapter out of short piece of flexible tubing and a bit of RTV to fit over the bushing that will help more of the solvent to get into the pot. Does not work as well as going through the back but it does work better than trying to get to it from the front.

Deoxit will destroy some potentiometers, sliders in particular. (The ones that use a plastic conductor instead of an actual carbon trace). Another product is Nutrol 401B which isn't as aggressive on plastics. Sliders sprayed with Deoxit will become very stiff and hard to move, but there is a fix. Deoxit makes a product called Fader Lube (comes in a tube) which will restore that silky smooth feel in a slider. Have fun fixing amps!

Wow thanks so much for this tip, this has been a huge help! Both my amps (a Line6 Spider and a Marshall bass amp) were ones I bought on the used market at roughly half the retail price, and both had this problem to some degree. I don't have Deoxit, so went with compressed air for now, and it seems to work just as well if the crackling isn't too severe. Simply removing the knobs and spraying the pots from outside has saved me a lot of time and effort! The Line6 Spider is now completely fixed, and I didn't need to take the amp apart at all. For the Marshall, the treble pot is still crackling a bit (but nowhere near as much as before, and all the other faulty pots are fixed), I'll try applying more spray tonight. I'm wondering: would covering the amps protect them from unwanted dust, and prevent this from happening again? I keep the guitars themselves in their gigbags, maybe I should do the same with the amps and invest in amp covers?

I took my caps off and nuts and washers and I still have static! 😣- I used D5. I can’t find a video on removing the head in the beast. Any advice? Other than taking it to some clown who can’t fix it either!

I’m fretting metallic scratching noise that sounds like metal slid across concrete but nothing bad with the knobs, just when I play loudly and especially on the bass notes of the guitar. Any ideas?

1989 is an old amp? Not really that old market-wise. it's about average as far as second hand goes.

It’s better to clean all of them with that spray so they won’t be scratchy

This only works temporarily for my peavey kb5 amp, spraying from the back in. works okay for a day or two, then scratches so bad i think its gonna explode.

Oh that’s bad. I’m sure there’s a point where pots can’t be saved and cleaned, and need to be replaced.

Not only are my knobs scratchy, the volume also doesn’t work correctly. I barely put it to 2-3 and it’s ducking loud. There’s no way to turn it down haha
@LeviBulger

Is it a Fender? Many amps (especially fenders) get suddenly VERY freakin loud once they get to about that range. Like a massive volume jump. Notorious on Deluxes and anything from the HRD series
@kmatt420

Felix Blacksher it’s a Fender fm 65r. The volume knobs are scratchy, and the the volume is intensely loud to the point where it’s unplayable!!

is it clean or did you use crowd white noise to cover up minimal scratchy-ness? lol

Not lame at all! Did Caig send you a congrat check? This is the best ad to their product! (I know you're not being paid to do it, but you should!). One question: did you notice any damage to the amp's finish and looks around the area where you sprayed it? I can see nothing imediately but how about over time - it's been nearly one year after you've used Deoxit on that pot. Thanks!

hey thanks! it's such an old amp that isn't clean to begin with, so I didnt really notice any effect on the finish.

You're supposed to turn off the amp first and spray into the opening on the back of the pot.

Ok, this worked great on my Marshall MG30, it fixed the scratchy noise on the volume. Although I still have a "pop" noise when powering on the amp. Anyone know if there is a fix for that?

I just bought a used peavy amp, and the knobs make lot of noise all around, would you think it's fixable with this stuff? Or wd40's version of electrical contact cleaner? Or would it be better to swap out the pots altogether? Or would it just be better to return it?

I NEVER thought I'd actually see someone tel anyone to spray fro the OUTSIDE of the pot. It does NOT get in to the contacts. Trust me. You Must pul the amp from the case to access the pots directly. I hope no one ever does this. The right chemical can damage to front of your chassis and/or your skin. Also, where are your safety glasses? this stuff does spray back at you. Any way, stick to playing your instrument and leave the technical stuff to the people who know.

watch this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BGNxWfI0LQM.html I've done both. pretty much the same results. temp fix.

Additionally, doing it from the front can actually push dirty lubricant into the pots. I understand that this method can work, but every professional amp technician I've talked to advises against doing so.

Would this be the issue for a 65 super reverb amp with some nobs including the vol doing this but also when you turn the reverb nob on it sounds like cracking and almost like very quite thunder? But if I turn the reverb down completely the severe cracking noise is gone. The other just have it when adjusting but stop when you pick your vol but that damm reverb gets worse the higher I go.
