This video shows how to troubleshoot and replace your horn. NOTE another common issue with these GM trucks is the switch located behind the air bag. BE CAREFUL if you try that because the air bag could explode! This video covers the fuse, relay, and replacement of both horns (driver side and passenger side

Great video! Wish I’d come across it sooner! This we’ll definitely come in handy trying to get mine working right now. I made the mistake of just going to the auto parts store and getting the generic replacement but I haven’t messed with it yet. So this should still hopefully save me some time and hassle. Thank you!

These horns have a design flaw from the factory. Water gets in there from the tire spray and shorts it out. An updated replacement horn has a splash shield to prevent this problem....and no, GM will not recall it even though it's a safety concern.

(June 2020)Dan, your video gives good advice. My horn is not working on my 98 GMC Sierra. Will try your methods. Will let you know if I figure things out. Today-Dan, my fuse block, does not indicate a fuse related to the horn. I listened to the relay, under the hood, and it is not making any sound. I will buy a new relay and see what happens. Hope I don't have to get into the steering column,that air bag thing freaks me out. I guess the horns themselves will be next after the relay.

My horn is working fine. I have a short, and it's draining my new battery after about 5 days I took off my positive battery cable and connected a test light to the cable and to the positive side of the battery and the light is on telling me I have a short. I check all my fuses in the dash, and the light stayed on I checked under the hood and when I got to the horn fuse I pulled it and the light went out, but the horn is working. Is there something in the horn circuit that could short to ground without blowing the fuse, like maybe the magnetic side of the relay.
@dannyjohnsonsgarage

I would swap the relay that looks just like it with the same number to see if the problem follows it.

@dannyjohnsonsgarage
@dannyjohnsonsgarage 6 лет назад
+Jason Workman I should be the same. Check the fuse first of all, and another common issue can be where the airbag contacts the metal to activate the horn where you press on it

@randygarza3001

Dunno if you will reply to this but I'll give it a go anyway. I have the same issue. When I honk the steering wheel I hear the relay clicking, after this thanks to your video I checked the fuse, the fuse was blown, swapped it out, still no sound, then the next step must be to swap out the horns? Anyhow I bough two new ones, replaced the passanger side one, but I can't locate the second one if there is one on my Suburban 2000, 2500LT. I will look for it behind the signal lights, might be down there? But shouldn't the fresh new horn work fine? The new horn i bough didn't have the same easy connect as the oem had, two spades instead, I plugged the green wire to the 12v sign on the new horn and the black on the other..
@dannyjohnsonsgarage
@dannyjohnsonsgarage 4 года назад
Patrick Gjønnes Yes, the second horn is below the headlights. I’ll post a link to a video that will get you close to that area. If you have a keyless entry, try locking it twice in a row to see if the horn chirps. If you do hear the horn it could be another issue and not the horn itself. Typically the fuse will blow from a short in a wire somewhere ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I5xXxWkNmwM.html

Hey Danny I did exactly what you did in your video, my fuse and relay are good I can here it click when I press the horn. My little brother went in my truck and tried to play music when only one battery was connected he said that he heard a clicking noise then he stopped now my horn doesn’t work, can you try and help me out?
@dannyjohnsonsgarage
@dannyjohnsonsgarage 5 лет назад
Cole Dowgielewicz Try unplugging the battery for a few minutes and see if that happens to work. My only other ideas from here would be the actual horns (not sure both would fail at the same time unless they each got a huge current and burned up or something strange). The switch under the air bag also goes out, but if you’re getting the click sound it appears the switch is still working- same with the clock spring (which is the wire under the air bag that gives power to the horn and turns when the steering wheel turns). . If it were me, I’d undo the battery then move to swapping in a new horn as shown in the video
@coledowgielewicz9231
@coledowgielewicz9231 5 лет назад
Danny Johnson I disconnected the battery for a few min didn’t work I’m going to try putting a power probe to my to my horns I took off the fenders also so I can do the rockers on my truck so hopefully I didn’t create a wiring gremlin while doing that

@Accumulator1
@Accumulator1 5 лет назад
A hot wire to one of the horns might have damaged insulation somewhere due to rubbing or rodent damage and is touching metal ground. Check the wires starting from each horn going back. You might have a bad relay. Try switching a relay from another source to test your horn and see if fuse still blows. Maybe one of the horns itself is shorted out to cause too much current draw. You may have to remove each horn and test by using jumper wire directly to battery. Tab to pos +, horn mount to ground -. One might be shorted while other still works. Could test each with ohm meter but I not know what the read suppose to be.

Thank you very much. Now I know what I will be doing this weekend. All I can say is, do NOT mess with the steering column area. There are a lot of people who have been killed trying to remove the steering wheel cover in the center of the steering wheel, only to have the air bag deploy and kill them where they sit. Extremely dangerous. Let the ASE shop mechanics handle that. If a neighbor tries this, what you will hear is, a loud bang, a moment of silence, and then a lot of screaming down the street from the wife when she realizes her husband just had his head partially torn off by the exploding air bag, followed by the sirens from the police and ambulance. It happens all the time.
@philduoos2961

I'm no expert - but I think if you disconnect the positive cable from the battery there will be no power for the bags to get set off by the air-bag sensors. Same goes for anything electrical - beyond just replacing a fuse - disconnect the battery cable or you can mess up your computer, air bags, etc.
