I have one and it works great. Told me on my sons Cruze that the 2 crankshaft sensors were going which is the reason for the check engine light. Mechanic said $350 to repair. Bought 2 new sensors for $50 each and did it myself in 10 minutes. Since then, no engine light and the car runs better. Easy to reset the check engine light off too once you have fixed the part. If the light comes on, this will help find what the problem is before you get your upsized $2000 repair bill for a minor problem. If you can read the codes and diagnose what the problem is first, you won't get ripped off by things you don't need from a Mechanic. This has already saved me thousands of dollars in unneeded repairs. (oh and works in Australia too!)

@sweetkicks18

What Can Fixd Diagnose? Fixd is a useful tool, but it can't diagnose everything. The general rule is that if a problem causes your "check engine" light to turn on, then Fixd can tell you why the light turned on and what type of repair you might need. Diagnosing a car is a whole lot more complicated than just reading trouble codes, and one code can be caused my multiple different problems. So even though Fixd can give you an idea of how to fix your problem, and even help you buy the replacement parts you need, complicated issues may still require the assistance of a professional mechanic.

This is a good tool for a parts changer. It's like changing a bulb in your house that won't light up,so you change the bulb with a good new one, but it still won't light up.So maybe it's the switch, or maybe it's a blown fuse but what caused the fuse to blow maybe a wire shorted out and so on and so on.My point is if it's that easy to diagnose and repair a motor vehicle , then anybody can do it and I need to change my line of work. Good luck with that...

Caleb Gray Thats not really what he was saying. He was saying that because of this thing people can think they are getting ripped off when they really aren’t. Almost every decent mechanic in the automotive industry knows that It would just be lazy to replace a sensor and call it good without inspecting systems related to that sensor that could have been damaged while the sensor was offline. I wish there was a good way to stop people from getting ripped off but sadly thats just the world we live in

It’s actually that easy, there are many devices out there that can diagnose your car obd readers. Mechanic are not doing anything special that the average person can’t. The only difference is they have better tools to do any jobs.
@matth9359
@matth9359 3 года назад
@@lloyda8007 oh really? It sounds like you do your own brake work or something. I'd bet my balls that the average person is going to have a hell of a time diagnosing a u1000 can com code in the ecm and I'd even bet I know what part they change first...there's a big difference between parts changing in your driveway and accurately diagnosing problems all day everyday with a timer on each job. What magical tools do you think we have that you can't get? A scan tool? Multi meter? Test light? Do you know how to use a scope or 5 gas analyzer and interpret the data? So either you can get them, or need to know how to use them, like a professional in their field would...not the shade tree parts changer. Big difference.

I just had an experience using fixd yesterday and I’m pretty disappointed how it was pretty inaccurate on reading the code in my 2017 Hyundai ionic. There was misleading error of the code that saved me thousands instead of going to a local dealership repair. I found out the code that causes engine light wasn’t mechanical or electrical problem but the lighter adapter with my tablet that was plugged in the whole time is causing the ECM or computer system being corrupted. I immediately removed that lighter adapter from the voltage port and sure thing after clearing the engine light and code from FIXD, and driven 50 miles the engine light didn’t come back on. The so called code diagnosis from FIXD mentioned that my clutch torque next to transmission needed to be changed . Dealer gave me quote over the phone that the repair was about $3000 to $4000 repair cost. I’m glad my slight Scotty Kilmer knowledge and application helped me along the way. I wouldn’t depend on FIXD 100% at all because i believe it’s just a tip of the iceberg of the problem.

Advertisements for these type tools make me angry. Pulling trouble codes from a car's computer is a simple process but understanding what triggered the code and how to repair it is why you pay a mechanic. The P0420 code shown in this news story can have many different causes, some simple and inexpensive to repair and others not so. Here is a list of what can cause this same trouble code that does NOT require the replacement of a catalytic converter. Damaged muffler or leaks in the muffler Damaged exhaust manifold or leaks in the exhaust manifold Damaged exhaust pipe or exhaust pipe leaks A misfire in the engine Oil contamination in catalytic converter Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor Faulty front oxygen sensor Faulty rear oxygen sensor Damaged oxygen sensor wiring Oxygen sensor wiring that is not properly connected Damaged oxygen sensor connectors A fuel injector that is leaking Fuel pressure that is high Use of the wrong kind of fuel (using leaded fuel instead of unleaded fuel) So, if you believe this gadget will make you as smart as a mechanic then go buy yourself a thermometer and become as smart as your doctor.

When I click through the Manual Diagnostics I get, "take it to the dealer or ... mechanic and have the codes retrieved". And constant ads. It costs $70 a year to use most of the functions.

i've had sour experiences before like when we did the dodge airbag recall the mechanics at a jeep dealer messed up the wiring so our driver side window is controlled backward and the ac/heat comes out of different areas. They claimed it wasn't, them but the truck ran fine and except for your yearly regular care the car has only suffered body damage over the past 210k miles. Then they tried to tack a whole sort of fees but if it was them they would waive the fee. for 250$ to get it all sorted it was honestly better to deal with a backwards window button and having the windshield air setting control the air pipes to your feet. but Chevy has had a good run near me. but some local mechanics just can't seem to fix my ford transmissions slipping.

I bought one of these things and plugged it into my car a number of years ago - shortly after that, my battery died. After four batteries and more jump-starts than I can count, I finally found a mechanic who told me that the drain on the battery was caused by my Fix'd plug-in. It did not run "only" when the engine was running, it pulled power every moment of every day. He unplugged it and the car now starts easily every time I turn the key.

To the people saying all mechanics are shady....no, your mechanics may have been shady, but most of us bust our asses to make sure that we do everything at a good price. Unfortunately FIXD is really misleading the public. Diagnostic is more than just scanning for codes (DTC'S). The catalyst efficiency code could be caused by a number of issues. Faulty O² sensor, sensor wiring, faulty catalytic converter, exhaust manifold leak, upstream exhaust leak, incorrect spark timing, engine misfire, ECT (coolant temp sensor) faulty, ECT wiring faulty, faulty fuel injector(s), to high of fuel pressure, failed head gasket, low cylinder compression, leaking valve seals, worn piston rings, vacuum leak, faulty MAF sensor, faulty MAP sensor, Faulty TPS sensor, anything that could give an incorrect reading that would cause the ECM to over or under compensate fuel trims. Its not always just limited to the failed component that caused the sensors to read an out of range or incorrect value, its getting to the root cause of the component failure. Ok, the catalytic converter failed...but why did it fail? Just replacing the catalytic converter doesn't fix the problem. Its bound to reoccur if you don't get to the root of the issue. Its like changing a fuel filter clogged with rust without addressing the fact that your tank and fuel lines rusting are causing it to clog. And then not addressing why the lines and tank are rusting. Are you getting bad fuel? Water intrusion into your fuel tank? Whats causing the problem? There's a lot more to diagnostic than reading a code. The code merely gives the technician direction on where to start. In one of FIXD's ads they have this lady plus FIXD into her car and it has a low oil pressure code. FIXD tells her it needs a pressure sensor. She brings it to a mechanic and the mechanic tells her it needs major repairs. Now her mechanic is a villain. Now, it may very well need an oil pressure sensor, but then again it may be something more serious. A technician needs to first check oil level, if the oil level is good then they need to determine if the gauge is faulty, is the sensor faulty, is the wiring faulty, whats the actual oil pressure, compare that with acceptable values for that specific engine, get vehicle to operating temperature while monitoring pressure to make sure there's not a pressure drop under load or after warmup, and if actual oil pressure is low, whats causing it? Is it an oil pump? Oil pickup tube? Main bearing failure? Internal oil seal failure?could be many, many things.. It may be a simple diagnosis, or it could be quite complex. Most times the problem is merely a symptom of a larger problem, or multiple small problems. You've been having terrible migraines for the last month. You don't go to the doctor because they are crooked. Instead you pop pain pills because they are an easy fix. Yet months later you have a stroke or seizure because you didn't get it fixed. You treated the symptoms instead of the root problem.

Fixd is not worth it, because you have to pay for the app . Aso, for that price and the app you can buy an OBD scanner in the store with no monthly fee.

Corie you gave this a pass without actually reviewing the product. You fail to mention what this product cannot do, which is significant. This device only checks emissions related engine codes. Fixd cannot check OEM codes, transmission codes, airbag, chassis or ABS codes. Because of the device limitations you do not actually know that your Land Rover’s P0420 fault code, actually requires your catalytic converter to be replaced. Your vehicle needs further diagnostics to confirm what the problem is. This device is the equivalent of you diagnosing your own medical problem by looking up symptoms online and telling a doctor what he should diagnose! I am not a professional mechanic, I have no axe to grind with the product other than this ‘news’ article and the companies infomercials are misleading. You would be far better off finding a reputable certified mechanic, and stick with them, just like you would a doctor. A diagnostic tool or even a computer is only as knowledgeable as the person using it.

@@ngcal78new-w-04 Very occasionally you can get lucky and the code relates to the component that is at fault, in most cases it just points you in the general direction and further testing is required. A little knowledge can be dangerous. Years of training and experience is needed to diagnose vehicle faults compatently. Find a good technician you trust and stick with them. You wouldn't let your mate from the pub wire up your house or fix your boiler why are cars any different. Granted there are dodgy mechanics out there but there are also technicians who work to a high standard and with integrity. When someone come into a garage with their opinion of what is wrong cause they have seen a fault code for say a lambda sensor out of range so the demand the sensor be replaced but the actual fault is a cracked inlet manifold, they expect the repair to take half and hour and cost £100 because their cheap code reader told them but in reality you need a couple of hours to investigate, find and diagnose the fault then maybe up to 6 hrs to replace the part depending on the vehicle plus a large bill for the parts(this is from personal experience by the way) it just causes mistrust and bad feeling. There is nothing wrong with doing your homework but please don't just take a small piece of information and think you know it all. The advertising for this device is really at deceptive and leads people to believe things which are just not true. By all means educate yourself but don't believe the bullshit, find a good technician you trust and talk to them. Don't be a back seat driver.

This doesn't fix anything, there are dozens of code readers, they ONLY READ CODES. Knowing the code will NOT help when you take to a mechanic, clearing code is only temporary. Pay for a full diagnostic only if they will offer up the info. Carmax would diagnose and put part numbers next to required parts and leave it up to you have it done or buy the parts yourself and fix it.

Customer: My check engine light came on and I cleared the code. Can you fix it? Mechanic: There are over 2,000 possible causes of a check engine light. With no code to use for diagnosis, how do you expect me to fix it, dumbass? I've been working in this industry off and on since 2012. I've seen several of these gizmos come and go. My favorite demonstration of these things is when some paid "mechanic" actor unplugs an ignition coil and goes "yep! It sees the miss fire!" Great. I just have some questions: Does it know the problem is with the coil? Does it think the module is bad? Does it suspect wiring? Could it be the spark plug wire? Or maybe the plug? Did the rings go bad? Is there a sticking valve? Did a lifter collapse? Is there a fuel delivery issue? These little gadgets give you an educated guess based on the most likely or most common cause for that specific DTC but, when the device is wrong, we, the professionals, are assholes. Nope. You're just an idiot thrice. 1) Not knowing anything about cars isn't a crime. Thinking that you know because of a gimmicky device is a crime of stupidity. 2) You got suckered into buying some junk. Idiot. 3) You look really stupid when you accuse the professionals of lying to you because of what your stupid gadget told you when it was wrong. When your check engine light comes on, check your gas cap. Beyond that, seek professional help. And if you still want to buy one of these gimmicky gadgets, I'd like to sell you one of the stars in the night sky and some ocean front property in Nebraska. And then, I'll sell you a skiing trip in the Florida Keys

Sad thing is I dont trust the dealer paid 155 plus tax for diagnostics and they came back with all the known symptoms mechanically for my car. Whe. I went in for a code for a terminal short to ground with official bmw codes. And instead they tried to sell me a repair bill for 9k. And I told them I was bringing it to them because they have the official software.

I have a question for an expert. What happens when I have the ista software and I run my car through it for an electrical issue but the dealer tells me it's the icm and will cost 2650 after parts labor and diag fees. However when I used the same software they have it showed no faults in the icm. Only possible bad grounds to the ecu. Now meanwhile. No one wants to pay outrageous prices for mechanic work when they do not know if they are being lied. To. Yes you are the professionals. However because wo many professionals have lied to customers on the past something simple to fix. The professionals are not trusted. All it takes is a consumer to deal with 1 mechanic to screw them over and now they dont trust someone else. Hopefully you are an honest mechanic.

When the guy who does the commercial that comes on as an ad (they have that one set up NOT to allow comments) he talks like that thing IS A MECHANIC! Then he acts like it‘s the greatest thing ever because it showed that his gas cap was LAID IN PLACE--NOT SCREWED DOWN, NOT TIGHTENED. Now HOW MANY people do that? Especially A MECHANIC!!!??? They aren’t that stupid, THEY KNOW all of what can & will go wrong if they leave the gas cap loose. This was a SET UP if I ever saw one. Besides, he says they HAVE TO UPCHARGE YOU FOR USING A TESTER. So, my next question is: How come Oriellys & Auto Zone hook it up to your car & test it FOR FREE!!!??} And give you a free printout besides? So, I say, go to you auto parts n get it done for free, THEN go to mechanic, print out in hand & just tell them what you want done! Then you can get your car fixed without that “We’ve gotta charge You this up charge” attitude, & save a few bucks.

I've been the very happy mechanic in your scenario Customer scans his car at dumb bum auto parts, and spends big money on a part Customer pays me to install Problem is not solved Idiot customer realizes he can pay me to put the old (and still good) part back on, and take the incorrect part back to recoup some of the lost money Customer pays for accurate diagnosis and repair The shop is happy The service writer is happy The mechanic is happy The parts department is happy The customer is furious and feels taken advantage of. Why?

So you spend the money on this when all you really need is a paperclip and Google,or you have a car that you can get trouble codes out of simply by turning the key a few times,just seem like a waste of money to me. Let alone,I'm not a mechanic,I'm able to figure out what's wrong with the vehicle by driving it,could be my dad IS,so maybe I do have that advantage,but my point is,you know your car ,it can only be one of 3 things ,electric,fuel or mechanical,drive the car process of elimination from there.

What a load of bullshit, Hello, My name is Tim, I'm A Mechanic that works at Duncan Tire and Auto, and I've had a real passion for cars almost my whole like, and it's why I decided to work at an Auto shop, this stupid peice of plastic is a waste of time and money, and Most Mechanics don't sham you like they say in the add. The Check engine light comes one when the computer senses an OBDII code, and the correct way to check it is use an OBDII Scanner, some of the cheapest ones are around 30 bucks and others can be more fancy but worth the investment, anyways, the device plugs into an OBDII port beloew your cars dashboard near the pedals, and the device will read if any codes are triped and give you exact details on what's triggering it, then a mechenic should look over the car on what might be causing the code to trip and check with you. Car manufacturers make all there vehicles with OBDII ports for this very reason, and it's what you need to trust, either go to your local Auto shop and buy an OBDII device yourself, as I said before, that's the correct way to scan your car for any issues
