Hey Scott, Your video could not have been more timely as I just got my R1T back from "Jack" at "Stuttgart Auto Body" after having been rear ended. My tail gate had to be replaced along with the rear bumper and some side panel repairs. As was probably your situation, Rivian recommended Stuttgart (Arvada, CO) given their unique expertise with Rivian and Tesla EV's. That said, my experience with Jack / Stuttgart could not have been any better. I'd told Jack he has a customer for life as I'd never consider any future repairs through any other body shop ... I highly recommend that any Rivian owner in the entire Colorado / Central Mountain Region use no other body shop and insist on working through Jack directly. He's exceptionally knowledgable, very responsive and highly ethical. I'd literally drive or transport 250+ miles just to have Jack handle any repairs required - he's really that good.

Nice! I agree Jack was great. He would walk me around the lot and show me all the banged up Rivians. Too bad I couldn’t film any of them! We’re going back for another repair (R1S) in a couple of weeks. Thx for commenting.

Wow! $3200 per year per car? We pay $1200 for our ‘23 R1S LE with full coverage. Just surprised at the difference. Glad you got it sorted and keep the great content coming! ⚡️👍

Thanks Scott for sharing! We had a remarkably similar experience, but we were rear-ended in about the same spot but on the passenger side. We had our work done by Accurate Auto Body in Redmond WA who is a Rivian Certified shop. Interestingly, our final repair costs were very close to the same as yours, which did include reapplication of ceramic coating that was covered by Nationwide. I was very pleased that all of the coordination was done between the shop and Nationwide with minimal interaction needed by me--very helpful since we live 90 miles from the certified shop. Accurate Auto Body did a great job. FWIW, this repair happened about a year ago and even though I was not at fault, my Nationwide insurance costs increased over 60% when it came time to renew. Now I'm looking into moving the Rivian to another carrier. BTW, Rocky looks great!

Thanks for watching and commenting! Yeah, I've heard similar stories, but lots of delays lately since there are a lot more Rivians on the road and still not enough certified repair shops. Interesting about your premium increase. I'm bracing myself for ours to go up, but luckily it won't for a while.

@@RivianDad insurance rates are rising whether you have a claim or not, even with a clean record like myself. ive been digging into it but the basic answer I get is "costs of everything are increasing so we're increasing rates to compensate". they don't give specifics. tbh, im considering switching back to an ICE, hybrid, or more mainstream EV because of the costs of insuring and potential repair costs for my R1T. this video is another data point in going that direction. the other was a recent road trip I took of about 2500 miles with my conclusion: charging sucks. what I could of done one way with 3 fill-ups in my hybrid of about 15 min total, took 8 stops of about 6-7 hours total. I love my R1T but it's painful. another great video btw.

Remember that with Rivian's own scheme you can insist on a proper Rivian service center doing the work and if your vehicle is totaled, they can help fast-track a new one to you.

Scott, I had many of the same concerns as you when I had my hail damage. I have USAA as my insurance company, and they did not balk at all on any of my claim, and supplementals. My pain point was more with the collision center I went to (Rivian Certified) in Colorado Springs, and Rivian. With respect to Rivian, I completely understand that they are trying to get vehicles out to customers, but it took them 3 months to get the parts to the collision center. During that whole time, it sat at the collision center, instead of my driveway, which brings me to the pain point with the Rivian-certified collision center. In my very humble opinion, and not knowing ANYTHING about body shops and how they work, they could have torn it apart for the initial assessment and appraisal, sent off that estimate to my insurance company, put it all back together again and let me drive it until parts come in. That did not happen. They are now in the last week or so before giving it back to me, which means they have had it for 5 months. It is now to the point where they have had my Rivian for almost as long as I have. Thankfully, I should have my baby back in time for her first birthday, and I have a bunch of really cool presents for her. I hope to be able to compare notes at our next RMRC meetup. See you then.

I will share my story with the same type of Dent on my r1s. I got an appointment with a shop in El Segundo 3 weeks after the accident happened. Then it took 3 weeks to repair from in authorized rivian shop. Total cost was $8,500. I don't think they took apart the aluminum I think they just fix the bumper and repaint it. But they repainted more than just the area they Blended everything around the area.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING! my R1s was damaged a little part at charger port area, the estimate was $9900, and now three months passed, still not get my r1s back. nationwide too, they handled the payment directly to the certified body shop. kinda missing my R1S... location is california.

Hello Scott, out of curiosity, did you consider paintless dent repair (PDR)? I've seen a couple time-lapse type of RU-vid videos in which this technique was used in cases that looked similar to yours, and these videos left me with the impression that PDR could potentially be a lot quicker and a lot cheaper than what you experienced. Thanks for your help.

Pantless dent removal could have gotten that back to 100% for a fraction of the cost and still had the vehicle being 100% original.

Did you consider PDR instead of the traditional body shop repair? And would Nationwide have covered PDR?
@RivianDad
@RivianDad 6 месяцев назад
PDR wasn't an option for this. Too big of a dent. And (even though I don't cover it in the video) the bumper and tail light were also damaged - albeit just barely. But, I wanted to keep the truck in as pristine condition as I could so I decided to go all in to repair it back to spec. Thanks for your comment!

Scott, looks great! RE: Nationwide not paying auto body shop directly, is this the policy of Stuttgart for all insurance companies that they collect the amount from the car owner, or is this a specific Nationwide issue?
@RivianDad
@RivianDad 6 месяцев назад
My understanding is that Stuttgart is set up for automatic payments, but Rivian is not. However, since I recorded this video they have set up an electronic database for the repairs, so it is possible that they’ve worked out the kinks and now can start taking payments directly. I’ll get back to you on that one when I talk to Stuttgart next.

How hard there was to get a parts? Been told that its almost impossible to find parts for Rivian
@RivianDad
@RivianDad 6 месяцев назад
In my case, that wasn’t an issue. However, I did try to do a repair from a different shop and they were not able to buy the parts. So it might just be only certain shops are able to buy the right parts.

Why would you pay over 3k for each R1S with Nationwide, a Rivian affiliated insurance when I pay less than half that with GEICO!

Really highlights how bad a design like this is. What should be a small back panel fix (or replacement), a tiny fender bender, is a massive effort. Contributing to why insurance costs are extra high.
@RivianDad
@RivianDad 6 месяцев назад
Yes. Especially that one side panel. (Which included the rear bumper and the tail light assembly) But this is not unique to Rivian. I know of other vehicles that are very similar in both complexity and cost. It’s the same reason any new gas vehicle is complicated to repair. Thx for commenting.
@curtisbme
@curtisbme 6 месяцев назад
@@RivianDad Yeah, bad design (for reparability) isn't unique to to this truck/SUV, just saying why this single panel design might look good but is bad for the customer as not only are you paying higher rates your going to have them jacked way up because of the cost of this. If you had the same damage in a Ford Lightning the repair time and cost would have a ton less. Really hope the R2 design has reparability concerns more in mind.

Wow, expensive insurance. I pay $1200 a year for both of my new vehicles (Audi and BMW), but I do have a $1000 deductible on each of them.

One thing to note is that, as the designer explained, they made changes in the design for the R2 that would help to reduce the cost of repairs. Smaller panels, etc.
