If you have such a laptop, be careful with the DC socket. MSI has installed the same socket that caused so much trouble with the Asus X555, R556 and co., they always break at the positive pin.

it is worth noticing that the shorted capacitor was out of the heatsink area and not a capacitor touching the heatsink which makes perfect sense since it overheats during games. good one Sorin!

As ever, Sorin shows us everything and his experience based on sound physics is more useful and instructive than flashier sites mainly from the USA. About a year ago he demonstrated that the modern tendency to double up capacitors rather than using high quality ones at the design stage can lead to machines refusing to switch on. I believe he was working on several HP models from cheap to extortionate at the time. Board manufacturers need to watch capacitor quality and pledge a warranty of 15 years on boards and/or build in override redundancy.

I think warranty seals would be OK if they put them on screws to access the motherboard or some other part you’re not likely to need access to before the warranty expires. You should be able to access the cooler, memory and hard drive easily.

What a great post. I liked the look inside the modern layout. Was waiting for meltdown at the 5 amp when it was going to ground. And loved the repair as de-solder to a toast cap. I think there is going to be a lot more of this (exact component) failure in this model. Thank you very much for the in depth view to the unit. M.

Wish this had been mine today. Asus Rog, same short on main power rail. Thermal camera showed nothing on either side of the board. Found odd reading on the gate of a dual MOSFET to CPU/GPU rails. Removed the MOSFET, short on the main rail gone. Replace MOSFET with new, short back again. Still nothing showing up on thermal cam (mind you the mosfets are rated at like 100A), decided that CPU shorted and called time on the repair. I really could have done with a 'flick off a cap and invoice' job today.

i got lucky and had the samee problem , power weeent in but no light ,i turned it around and put a pin on the little hole on the back, and felt the fan spun so i presseed for 30s and nothing , i got sad until i preessed again 2min later and boom :D

i'm wondering why did you not replace the bad capacitor. if it was present on the board. it must be there for some reason.

I use exactly this laptop. Mine doesnt even show the light when turned on on battery but will come on with the adapter and off just before booting.

Nice job I always like the practical approach with simple tools instead of someone reading schematics and using 3-5 $k machines to fix problems... Also I notice that 1, this is a very new machine it shouldn't have this kinda issue... 2. the GS series sucks ( I used to own one I know) 3. those capacitors are right above the GPU heat sink... one wonders if the heat sink were a bit longer and they had been cooled would it still have blown?? 4. at 21:07 it appears the capacitor is also cracked... which would have been another way to find issue.....

such weak thermal pads. or at least they look like that. Some thermal grizzly minus pad 8 will work in there and thermal grizzly kryonaut paste or even arctiv mx5. Salutari din Romania si mult succes in continuare !!!

The faulty cap had its value printed on it. Why not replace it? It would have been easy, and surely the cap is there for a reason.

Whoa im an amateur i just started a 3 months course basics of laptop repair .... but this msi monster looks alot diffrent it has alot of coils and alot of ics than notebooks ... the way the thermal pads are melted is weired and cpu themal past shows an imperfection in the heat sink at begining of the video you unpluged the battery and charger and you were cheking voltage wat were you doing ??

After seeing some of your repair videos I am wondering why you don't seem to replace those capacitors you have found to be faulty and removed.

I liked to see how you found the fault. Should the electrolytic capacitor be replaced? Or is it not necessary?

While didn't you replace the electrolytic cap ? Thought is important on the graphic power rail ?

Why didn't you replace the bad capacitor, surley just leaving a blank space isn't going to do the rest of the components any good?

(13:20) -- you need an infrared heat screen / lamp ... once you place power on the board under the infrared screen -- it will denote the area / part - that is overheating ... sourcing would be easier this way ... just a suggestion for this type of application .... :)

2022 and Sorin still has no thermal camera😄 I'd replace this cap... they didn't put it there for fun... i think this could cause problems or instabilty when the machine is pushed hard.

That's a Tantalum capacitor.

Yes it is normally ceramic capacitors that go short, electrolitics tend to puff up and become useless.

I have same laptop as on the video. Y, G, V keys and all brackets and enter key are not working. I pushed reset button on the bottom and it helped for 2 days. Now i have the same problem. What the problem could it be? Do i need to replace whole keyboard?

Well I have a similar problem with my GS65, it worked the previous night the next morning at the office, I plugged in my charger and the laptop came on automatically. The fans and keyboard light came up for few seconds while the power light was blinking slowly like when it on sleep mode and the turns off. Till this very day it won't turn on again. Please help fix it 😭😭😭

Actually a big large capacity electrolytic capacitor.

I ruined the el cheapo version of this (G76 i5 rtx1650 on sale for 4-500 £) by trying to replace SSD with battery/power in. Dropped a screw twice, after it already did not start dropped it again on the screen connector. Sparks, dead. Clumsy, was in a hurry. Found another outlet sale G66 i5 3050 at around 600£. Can I swap the G66 mb to the G76 which has 17' screen or is this unwise when the screen connector has been shorted? (The G66 was a demo pc, battery is shot and someone seems to have pushed hard on the trackpad but that is ok, I got back a cheap gaming pc)

I have a three year old Overpowered OP-LP3 Laptop. Recently the glue holding the display on failed and the display tilted down applying pressure to the connector. Not wanting to work on it myself I brought it to a shop that reinserted the connector but the display would not light up. The repairman opened up the computer and found burnt components on the motherboard. Problem is we can't find a schematic for this machine in order to identify the failed parts. Do you have any idea with to find a schematic for this Overpowered OP-LP3 Laptop? Andy advise would be greatly appreciated. It's a beautiful machine and I really need to get it working. Thank you in advance.
