Jason... the reason I started microsoldering all those years ago... Jason’s queue... the reason I was really careful about what RU-vid videos I made! Keep up the good work 👍

Hey Jason, I know the video is a year old, but wasn't the pass code written on the inside of the display with a little heart ♥ Keep it up, I try to watch all of your videos! I love them! I swap displays and speakers and stuff on phones but never did something like this! Respect to you and your great videos! You are the Bob Ross of phone repair!

Coming straight off of TCRS Tim, Jessa and Louis' channel. Gotta say love your positive attitude and also what a great equipment you have. Especially your Overhead cam with those 60 fps are so pleasing to watch. Will be gladly watching more of you, even if i have never even attempted microsoldering myself. Greetings

BTW Jason these videos are amazing. I appreciate the time you put into making them and watching you trouble shoot the problems. I2C lines are my weak spot and after watching how you do this I have faith next time I see problems like this I will have a greater chance to solve it. Thanks so much and keep up the great work!
@ststele
@ststele 4 года назад
Thanks. I was worried about this one though since they had already checked I2C lines. I have had the 6s do this before and it not be an I2C issue (that I could tell). I was worried this was going to be a bad solder joint under the CPU or PMIC. It's only because I whined about not getting to fix this problem that it wound up being this problem. lol =)

You sir are my true hero. After having issues with mother's iPhone 6 for not turning on, I was worried, that smth severe happend (she dropped it). The dcps showed 70mA and off, rinse and repeat. After reading severl threads and inspecting the board I found a little damage on the ram (in the corner where the backlight driver is) and I thoguth that's it, the device needs some proper and expensive repair. Nonetheless, after I saw your video I basicly did the same route as you did and checked all the i2c lines and I found a bad behavior (except for the 0V > 1,8V jumps) on the AP_BI_I2C0_SDA line (no 1,8v jumps on other end of the pull up resistor). This line is directly under the backlight driver. I removed the backlight driver and et voila the device has a "normal" boot behavior. I just ordered a new backlight driver and hope that the device is going back on track after the repair. I can't even explain how much I have to thank you. If I ever come across Canada I'll sure visit you and thank you personally. Keep on going.
@ststele
@ststele 4 года назад
This is really good to hear. I have ran into this exact fault on the iPhone 6 before where the backlight driver screws with one of the I2C lines. I'm betting you get this one fixed. It's tricky soldering with hot air right up against that CPU tho! Thank you for commenting. :)

Could you tell me what is the benefit of using diode mode and putting red on ground instead of just continuity or ohms. Thanks for the videos. Or diode mode with black on ground. Could you show the difference in the readings so that it might make since.

u had the donor board right there seemed it would be faster to just grab the filter off it. also oxford dictionary clearly states solder is pronounces SAH DER not SOLE DER. SOLE der is the UK pronunciation, so r u from MuRika or across the pond?!?!

People not telling the full truth again :-( I used to repair all sorts of general electronics, and trying to get the full truth from the owner was a game of repeat the story untill it changes. You have to be part sherlock holmes and part bullshit detector lol :-D
@jwilko7998
@jwilko7998 4 года назад
Haha, I agree with what you are saying, and as they had the device over for repair they then become a expert in the field of electronics and tell you "it wont be much of a fault it will be a fuse or something!"
@ststele
@ststele 4 года назад
Mmmmmhmmm... I even chose this one based upon my gut telling me it was going to be a signature fault. My bullshit detector completely failed me!
@compmaster13

Yeah, I do iPhone repairs but don't have the equipment to do microsoldering, so I send those boards away to someone to be fixed. When doing so, I always mention if it has had any prior repair attempts, I'm sure they appreciate it. I mostly buy damaged iPhones off eBay, fix them, and resell. Nothing annoys me more than buying an iPhone and finding out that it's iCloud locked. Most of the time those sellers will refuse to remove it (the most recent one I've had even had the nerve to say "I'm not removing it because I don't know you", although they were the seller I purchased it from), and the majority of the time I have to go through the eBay returns process (with eBay stepping in) to get my money back (if the iCloud lock isn't mentioned in the listing, it's not as described). I'm very picky about the iPhones I buy (I primarily work on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus), so people like this really annoy me. Imagine you found an iPhone with a pretty clear case of an LCD issue, so you replace the screen and it works, only to find that it's iCloud locked. In that state, the phone is even more useless to me than the way the seller described it.

Jason, why not put filter & fix, any particular reason? take the backup and let them use as long as it works when to use diode mode? does Tristar tester which you showed few videos would have caught it? Thanks for wonderful videos
@compmaster13
@compmaster13 4 года назад
Jason has said previously that when a data recovery device comes in, he's only looking to get it working to take a backup, not to fix it 100% unless the customer requests it. Tristar has a different function completely so wouldn't have caught this.

Thank you Jason for all of your excellent content. I would like to contribute to your patronage site, but would prefer to do a one time appreciation for the videos. From you and ArtOfRepair and the many others of you I was able to find my shorted cap, remove it and get a login screen. Now I just need to figure out if I need to replace said cap and how to get the shields back on to maybe salvage the phone or just yank the data and let it go. Much credit to you all for making it all look so easy...Iphone 6s, shorted cap C2127.

Agreed. While it's nice to make money off recoveries/repairs, I do try to emphatically advise people that paying $2/mth to have their data on the cloud is a small price to pay for the peace of mind.

@@pldaniels I've been meaning to cover this on the channel in a video I have planned but life keeps overruling. I'm gonna start having that talk in data recovery videos tho. It's so very cheap and also, Google Photos works well too (I'd be lost without it).

@ststele
@ststele 4 года назад
I used a commentpicker.com and let it choose. I wasn't expecting 400+ comments (300ish that were not duplicate, ppl trying to cheat) and could have never chose someone myself. So many ppl need this stuff. I pinned the winner to the top of the comments & we shipped the drivers out. I didn't do a video because although a lot of my audience is interested in tools, those videos really don't do very well. I took some screen shots to prove it was legit random though.. :-)

That’s very confusing to me that they were smart enough to check i2c resistors but didn’t think the problem was the chestnut ic they just put down🤷
@ststele
@ststele 4 года назад
The line had a near normal diode mode reading though. I guess they just did not check it for voltage. Edit: Or did they? Seems like they were on the right track for sure. I think they were trying to fix image but then felt they had killed the CPU maybe?
