@@cheerfullpizza1949 hopefully it works for a while for you I been looking around my neighborhood for lawn mowers and weed eaters thrown out so I could do the same and trash pick one or even a few if I'm lucky enough no such luck but where am at the scrappers are out collecting so I missed out by probably a half hour seen a scrap guy with it in his trailer thrown in on top of a bunch of scrap metal
Customer asked me: "Do you work on lawn mowers?" I answered with: "No, I fix lawn mowers." Anybody can work on things, but rather or not if they can fix them or not, that's another thing. “A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.” - Albert Einstein
I would try to fix this mower. Looks and sounds good. The electric start is a huge bonus for a female as well as some of us older folks. Even if I did not make a lot of money from this machine as long as I knew I was helping someone out that would be enough for me. Thanks for the video's.
I love your videos I'm only 14 but enjoy them a lot. I always can't wait until Friday's to watch these. Thank you for the content that cures my boredom
This is my absolute favorite model of cub cadet push mowers, honestly it’s probably just my favorite push mower. very nice video i’m glad you repaired it and kept it from ending up in the junkyard. Hopefully it gets many more years of service.
I trash picked a battery start Craftsman mower 7 or 8 years ago. Needed a battery and charger. On this one there is no stator to charge the battery, hence the charger. Several, years converted it to auto choke with parts on hand. Still use it. That would have made a great video, but I don't know how. So yes, why not. If the wheel holds up, you’ll get your money out of it and have a good video, too.
I got a couple of mowers from neighbors and the trash man and just got them going and no electric starters worked. They cranked fine with the rope with 2 pulls max after I cleaned them up and changed the oil. They were too much trouble to fix the electric and ran fine after I got everything lubed and freed up. Thanks and Blessings!.
I think battery and if you chase down where the power is going and fix the starter you have basically almost a brand new mower with electric start. Now have you heard of using WD-40 as a starting fluid?
I have an identical mower (troy bilt) and it has the same issue with the same wheel. I was working on another approach to fix it but that way you did was interesting.
I have always wondered, how do the valves get unaligned, but seems easy enough to fix once you know how to take it apart, adjust it and put it back together
I got a free cub cadet push mower. Removed deck. Derusted and repainted.serviced carb. Replaced rope recoil. I think their kid was trying to start without depressing lever. Parts $50 Can. Sweet mower practically free. Even set my first ever valves.
Gr8 vid I just picked one of these without electric start. I had the same issue with the rear wheels. I also added fuel cut off because the carburetor was leaking just a little bit. I wouldn’t fix the electric start. I would remove it .
Where do you get th charger, I run into so many electric start mowers, but I have to get rid of the electric system, because it is no use without a charger
I wouldn't bother with the key Start ignition unless the mower has a generator which can recharge the batteries. I think that you might eventually have to replace the wheel because the only thing that we used that 2 part epoxy stick on was some power tools which had a minor cracked in the front aluminium bearing plate. We used to use in some of the Metabo drills from memory & it was only to stop grease from leaking into the motor !
With all the fancy gadgets they put on lawn mowers these days comes fancy costs for repairs ! Give me an old push mower any day ! Wow am I showing my age 😆
If you think you can double the value with new battery pack and charger to selling price the maybe replace. In other words, $40 in parts for battery and charger adds $80 in value. Check for voltage drop from key switch and battery pack to starter. Corrosion on terminals, wires and connections can cause voltage drop and a slow/no turning starter. This would probably sell for about $150 or so everything working 100%.
I have a question so I’m working on tuning a chainsaw and I tuned it but if I go full rev then let it go back to idle it will stall, but if I increase the idle speed the chain will start to move.
Key start on such a little lawn mower is ridiculous. Don’t seem to have them here in a land down under. Even the choke lever up near the handle is weird. Cheers 🇦🇺
Such a shame it looks like a decent mower but like you said probably not Worth it. But you decide to replace battery on it would be a interesting video for sure.
As long as the mower starts with the pull cord, that would be good enough for me, unless I was selling it and the new owner wants it working and doesn’t mind spending the extra money on it, then I would replace the battery and charger.
I have a homelite ht16 and i adjust the carb, it starts and runs but after 5min it dies and won't restart even when i adjust the carb. Whats the problem?
I would replace the Fuel cap, Because the vent, doesn't seem to be working. to test this, when it happens again, I would crack the gas cap loose, let some air into the tank and then see if it starts.
If I was you instead of buying a new battery I would just try to charge that one and see what it would do if it's 12 old just put it on at 12 volt wrinkle charger on it and let it charge and see what it does the last one I had I tested it and I thought it was bad and it wasn't bad all I needed is charged
hi ..i have the same mower...a spring come off. i know it goes by the trasmission but i dont exacly where it goes and i cant find out...do you know where it goes?
I looked at the diagram and I think it a return spring, connects to a lever on the transmission and then to the deck, thru a hole or a slot. IT should be return spring, to help reduce the belt tension, when the self propel, is not being use.
Agree, not worth it.. I tried working on one last summer for a lady at camp and didn't know where to start. Tried a couple of things but it was a pita.. Take everything off that isn't needed for a elec start and just pull it over.. Tire came out good.
I'd fix what you did. I've got friends who bought key start mowers, & they forgot the battery needs charging from time to time, though I think a mower with this system should have a charging system of some kind. Would be interesting to see the key start fixed. Next time you start this mower, test at the battery cables for power.
i would not bother to invest money into the key start. i do though, wonder how long that epoxy repair will last. most wheels are not too expensive , usually around $25 .
In my opinion I don't think that it's necessary to have the batteries for the electric start to work because I personally don't think that it's worth fixing.
I would sell it as is. It’s a well used Cub Cadet! So basically a Chinese special. You probably won’t get much more for it with the electric start so why put out the expense and effort? Cheers
I would if the starter spun the engine a little faster it sounded a little slow , if everything worked I'd see if I could replace the rechargeable batteries in the pack that came with it and find a charger and maybe also make a charge port on the plastic cover so I could plug it in without removing the battery and charge it that way but it's alot of work if say the starter is going on it its not worth it
@@HomeGaragechannel yeah I did the same thing for a battery pack for an old drill that died so I bought the replacement rechargeable batteries and made the pack over by connecting the batteries exactly like the dead ones and putting it all back together and it worked so that might be a cheaper route to go but I'm not sure what batteries are in that mower battery pack or how much they would cost a little research and it should be easy to find out if it's more cost effective to either buy a new pack or buy the batteries and make one , in my case for the old drill they wanted 50$ for a new pack and the batteries came in a kit to replace your old ones for 20$ so I just bought the replacement battery kit
Ah I see you have already come across this monstrosity of a mower.. I have one currently sitting awaiting repair. Original owner said it won't start, and smokes .. found out why it won't start.. autochoke lever was on wrong side, and it smoked because too much oil. Two other problems now to tackle.. a horrible banging from under the engine cover (loose) and no self propel.. MTD has ruined this brand 😠 Especially using this engine. First glance I thought it was a Kohler 🤣
@@HomeGaragechannel haha! That's so true... I was really excited when I managed to score it for the price I did. . Then I started to get into diagnosing it... I honestly feel that going forward, I'm going to avoid these Powermore/Powersmart engines. I would much rather work on a Tecumseh.
