Fixing a faulty meteor icicle light.

This video is a guide to fixing a fault meteor light, with an extra bit on tri-state multiplexing. (Charlieplexing)
PLEASE NOTE. Some of the meteor light circuits have a capacitive dropper inside the power-supply plug. This has no isolation from the mains, so all the circuitry in the icicles should be regarded as being at mains voltage.

Nice job bigclivedotcom. I enjoyed your explanation of the failed Led and the multiplexing.

I bought a couple of these sets last year, the main problem I had was they snapped in the wind at the strain relief. One set had a really dodgy power adaptor with a pcb cut out from a random piece of equipment. Thanks for the video

+SDG Electronics Did you salvage them? They operate on about 5V and you could just re-purpose them by hard wiring them to make a new indoor string. Or redo them as a properly waterproof outdoor set.

+bigclivedotcom I lost one of them to the wind, I've salvaged the others. I'd recommend if fitting outside maybe replacing the heatshrink with glue lined heatshrink as some moisture did get in some of them.

Proof that Clive is a good person: he uses snips to bend a lead, and he doesn't accidentally snip it off.

Got a set of the RGB metor lights from banggood (SKU096512), and they had a capacitive dropper power supply, and the capacitor was getting quite hot so was not impressed. I noticed on the box (yes, it has a retail box!) it said 5v output, so precariously disassembled and metered the PSU, and yes, it was varying from 3v to 5.5v dependent on the lights. So removed the PSU, and put a USB plug on the end, and it now runs from any old 5v USB socket, and draws at most the massive amount of 1.42W (or 0.25A @ 5.22v) and can run from a 2200mah usb powerbank for... a very long time? lol A far cry from the 7W on the banggood site, or the 5v @ 1A that the box says :-O

If you have trouble with heatshrink wicking water into things, I've found nail polish works well. Clear stuff looks quite professional even if you just slap it on.

The second you said tristate, i thought about the tristate buffers in computers. The matrix plus reverse polarity does give double the choice, also the limited potential applied to two series leds wont light them, quite sneaky really :-D

Hi, another great video 👍🏻 I have a set of meteor lights with a very similar looking circuit board and was wondering if you could assist me? When taking down my lights last weekend I noticed one the the tubes had three pairs of LEDs out so I opened it up, checked the LEDs and they aren’t faulty? I noticed the 8pin chip appeared to have a hairline crack, so I unsoldered and indeed it broke in two!? I have no idea where to get a replacement or even the spec if needed? Could you point me in the right direction? I have an image of the chip with codes on the back side. Cheers

Just wondered how you identify the positive and negative sides on the replacement leds (and on the boards) - I'm assuming these are marked but haven't yet had a close up look at one.

The LEDs usually have a slight chamfer at one side to indicate polarity.

Dear kindlly please, we are a company in the field of installing urban lighting elements and we use your products. One of products that has been installed (Led Snow fall tube) has the following problem: When the weather is rainy, the light inside the LEDs is cut off, and after the humidity area dries up (about two days), the light comes back on. The used (power supply) is also a product of your company and has no problems. Please advise how to fix this problem if possible.

You may be able to replace the power supply of it's failed. Many can use a USB phone charger.

If there's a plug between the power supply and string of icicles, check it's the right way round.

3:30 Wouldn't the first three LEDs (the right hand side of the three leftmost LED pairs on the page) also light up in series in this arrangement? Or did I miss something?
@sdgelectronics
@sdgelectronics 9 лет назад
The supply voltage has to be chosen to be less than two led forward voltage drops
@user-gx6jb6wc5g
@user-gx6jb6wc5g 9 лет назад
+Dosbomber The current is limited, so the voltage will drop down to the forward voltage of the single LED on that pair of wires. That won't be high enough to cause the other circuits to light. But if one of the LEDs fails open circuit, then others will light as pairs.
@Dosbomber

Ah ok, so there's a bit more to it than I was seeing. Thanks.

Any tips or what a person should buy if one would want to become an electrician?
@user-gx6jb6wc5g
@user-gx6jb6wc5g 9 лет назад
+nunchuck90 The formal process of training as an electrician varies around the world. By far the best training would be an apprenticeship, where you got paid as you learned and also built up the real-life experience that is wanted by future employers or in your own endeavours.

+bigclivedotcom thank you, i live in the uk and am 15, what tools would you say are essential for starting off?
@user-gx6jb6wc5g
@user-gx6jb6wc5g 9 лет назад
+nunchuck90 If you're in the UK and 15 then now is the time to start looking to start an electrical apprenticeship as soon as you leave school. The tool basics for electrical installation work would be pliers, wire cutters, a set of insulated shaft electrical screwdrivers with flat blades and pozi-drive cross head blades. A hacksaw, measuring tape, hammer and whatever tools you need as you go on from there. If you start an apprenticeship they will typically give you a list of the tools you might need to have.

Hi You’re obviously a man that knows his electronics and LED Xmas lights! Cheeky question - I have a set of faulty connectable outdoor LED icicle lights which aren’t lighting up at all but will allow power to pass through and illuminate the next set in the chain???

bigclivedotcom Hi Clive, they are 10m long, 10metre length, there is a function control unit at the start which is plug and play, the bulbs are small and soldered in-line and have a resistor on one of each leg. The connectors are a three pin configuration. They were a brand new set last year as a replacement for a faulty set (funny enough) they don’t light up at all but will allow power to pass to the next set if first in the chain? Thanks

It's that one there... :P Amazing to think that one component can cause such a big cock-up, but that's what happens when quality control doesn't exist... :\ And as for those generic snips, I use them too, though Rolson branded, they wear out fast... :P
@user-gx6jb6wc5g

+twocvbloke I treat these snips as disposable. Especially given the random abuse I sometimes give them.

It is not necessary some PIC or clone of PIC, it could be some ST product (among others). ST7LITEU09 have same pin-out as as PIC12 series (Vdd, Vss, reset are on same place) and Chines use ST microcontrollers in most of their designs (they are cheap and as much important for China they don't have any risk of import ban on them)
@user-gx6jb6wc5g
@user-gx6jb6wc5g 9 лет назад
+Miloš Lazović Ah, I'll have to check that out. One day I may end up desoldering one of the chips and sticking it in my PIC programmer to see if it can identify it. I'm guessing probably not.
@mrlazda
@mrlazda 9 лет назад
bigclivedotcom But even if it is genuine Microchip is possible Microchip programmer would not recognize it. If they ordered factory programmed microcontrollers it would not be recognized by programmer (Microchip offer that option for cheap for medium and large orders). Only way to be certain what is it is to decap them, but it involve some naughty chemicals.
