Learn how to fix a GE top load washing machine that is making a grinding noise. The model in the video is a GTW220ACK4WW but this video applies to a lot of top lop load GE washers models including GTW460ASJ7WW, GTW460ASJ5WW, and more. In this video I show how to replace the clutch and mode shifter. This video is part of of my series "Free on Facebook" in which I repair, reuse, repurpose things I find for free!

Thanks for this video. I added it to my one star review for this washer. There is no way those important parts should be made of cheap plastic. It is designed to fail. Whatever happened to consumer protections? As a side note, I tried to show this video to a GE repairman since my machine is under warranty. He looked away and said he doesn't learn repair from watching RU-vid videos. Then proceeded to tell me it was the belt which he replaced and after he left the noise started up again. If GE wants to waste their money I will keep calling them back. I have the extended service plan. If they keep sending technicians like that they will have spent 10 times the cost of this machine in service calls.

One note, my washer was fairly new (2 years old) and there was a grinding sound during the SPIN cycle. So I ordered a clutch kit from amazon to do the repair ($18). But after taking it part I didn't have the debris from grinding plastic. It turned out to be the shift motor assembly needed to be replaced ($24). so this might be helpful for some people with a similar problem.

if the shift motor is the problem then during the "spin" cycle (spin drying cycle) it will NOT spin and make that grinding noise once as it "tries" to engage. @@jenniferwilliamson2777

Very informative & helpful video without being long & drawn out! My machine was making more of a squeaking noise than a grinding one, but I pulled that plastic safety shield off to check things out anyway. Instead of chunks of white plastic/nylon, I found more of a black dust. I immediately said "I know what that is...belt dust!!!" Sure as can be, I looked at the belt first thing and found that on the splined pulley (connected to the motor), the belt had somehow jumped up one spline so that the edge of the belt was rubbing against the large flat edge of the pulley. I pulled down on the belt while turning the pulley, got it back where it belonged, and all my troubles went away!! I'm still going to replace the belt as the one edge is pretty chewed up. But, until it gets here, the current one is still running the machine! $10 "preventative maintenance" vs. the $130 I thought I was going to have to shell out for a new transmission/bearing platform!

EDIT: This washer is very different than mine inside. Mine has a "clutchless" motor. I cannot get any part behind the pulley, except the whole motor... It's only $100 more to buy a new washer. I'm still going to take it apart and grease/clean the back of the pulley. If that works... Great! If not I will be getting a new washer. THANK YOU!!!! You saved me waiting like a month to get my GE repaired!!! I'm going to order the part today, but mine only made the grinding noise for about 15 seconds before I turned it off. It does not grind in the spin cycle. Tonight I will take it apart and grease it, and see if I can finish my one load without grinding. It was not grinding last time I used it, then we had to move it as I had a broken pipe that supplied water to the washer. This is the first time I tried to use it since it was moved. BTW... Just got through fixing my washer. Took me a little while, I had to just tilt back the washer at 45 degrees, I didn't have the room to lay it flat. The only issue I had was getting the pulley wheel off, at that angle it was hard to get an angle. I had already took out the mode shifter bolts and it happened to fall out while I was banging on the pulley and that gave me more room, so got it off pretty quick then. No other issues and so far the washer is working fine. Less than $75 to fix, including overnight shipping on the parts. Thanks for the video, made it fairly easy.

I have the same problem and I recently replaced the belt, clutch, spring and gear box but I’m still having issues with the spin cycle not removing the water from the clothes. I’ve only done one load so far after the replacements. I did notice all the flakes of clutches and belt debris when I removed the housing so I’m assuming the clutch, belt and gear box was going bad. Majority of the noise is gone but I I did hear it a couple times when I put the clothes back on a rinse and spin cycle. I got the parts through Sears and they are genuine OEM GE parts so I’m assuming they are quality parts. Any suggestions? Should I run it a few more times and see if it takes a couple cycles to set back to normal?

Hi! Thanks for the great video. I just did the replacement you show in your video and it helped a ton. But once I got the washer back up on it's feet, I can get it to start to fill, but it won't actually continue or move onto the next cycle. I figure I must've done something, but no idea what might have caused this. Got any suggestions? EDIT: Solved it. It helps if you PLUG IN the mode shifter!!! FML 😂

@DuctTapeMechanic, so far I changed the belt, clutch spring, gear box, and just changed the transmission pulley. It’s still making the grinding gear noises. It’s not as bad as before but still making them during the rinse cycle. I didn’t have any washer gear oil so I used a Valvoline multi purpose automotive grease. Could this be a contributing factor? If not, what else could be causing the gear noises at this point?

Amazing videos! My GTW460 was making some noise but not quite that. Hoping you can advise me here. Everything works fine except it won't agitate, the machine fills, drains and spins however it attempts to agitate with little movement. With the lid removed (lid switch tricked I'm able to observe it with the lid off as it agitates) and during the agitate mode, there's a slight attempt of rotation of the auger to the left and then right every few seconds but somethings slipping or spinning, like teeth are sheared off. I don't have any plastic fragments on my transmission pulley, I removed it and cleaned off oil residue and all of the teeth are in good shape on what gears I see. The little shifter motor that moves the fork seems to rotate fully allowing the fork to move and completely shift so the machine spins properly (engage/disengage spin I guess you could say?). I pulled the auger and the agitator hoping to find the female splines sheared but everything looks fine on the top tub side. When trying to remove the auger while holding the tub stationary, I was actually able to rotate the auger/agitator clockwise occasionally, again like something in the transmission is giving or slipping, i.e.broken? Do you think my gears in my transmission are sheared off or something, it passes every other test in the field test mode, except as I said, when it attempts to agitate it's just a slight jog of the agitator to the right and to the left, if I grab the agitator while it's doing it occasionally I could provoke a grinding sound of something spinning inside of something. I feel like the only thing that could be messed up is the transmission was hoping you could confirm that? Thanks in advance!
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic Год назад
Seems like you did a splendid job troubleshooting. I initially assumed that the agitator teeth were stripped but you checked that. I agree with your conclusion that it most likely is the transmission, especially if there was oil on the pully. It's a bummer. If you are in the market for a used washer I recommend a kenmore 80 or 90 series washers they are build like tanks plus parts are cheap (especially if you can get one for $200 or less)

My washer is making this exact noise and I was so grateful to come across your video! When I disassemble, I do not see the same white powder to indicate the clutch is worn down. There is however some darker almost metallic colored residue. Just wondering if that might mean anything or if I should just replace the clutch and hope for the best? I follow your instructions about loud noise washer and you mentioned after taking black cover off there would be grits of the clutch color, there wasn't any. But a lil grease dust maybe,but not in color of clutch. And why do they look almost new kinda. I haven't checked on SUSPENSION rods but I did noticed that the colors weren't as you mentioned for the washer model etc. Why,same model?

Changing mine this afternoon, except for the spring, which hasn't arrived yet. If there's an issue as is, I'll just repeat the disassembly and switch out the spring ($9 for the spring???). I saw much cheaper timer assemblies, but settled on one that I KNEW would be new and the color was bright white vs some of the others that were obviously old/yellow-beige. My clutch sprocket was about $9, spring @ $9, and I think the timer was @ $39, so I'm pleased with this one.

I’m super impressed at how damn smart you are! I’m an accountant and people call me smart… but I’m blown away at how much you know about machines and t How they work! My GE washer is making a CONSTANT grinding noise during agitation. I tried opening up to see if dolly bent up the bottom cover but nothing was touching. Your video show intermittent grinding and based on your remedy I can understand what’s happening… the teeth are slipping. What do you recommend I look at for constant grinding? I really appreciate any help you can provide!
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic Год назад
I appreciate the kind words. A bad clutch could certainly cause constant grinding. I would tip the washer on its side, take off belt guard, and examine pulley and clutch for flakes/plastic wear. If there are flakes replace the clutch (possibly the shifter actuator as well), if no visible signs of damage it could be the gearbox is shot. Hopefully this helps

I have the exact Hot Point washer as in this video making the exact same noise. I replaced the clutch and the mode shifter as shown, but its still making the noise. the transmission is working fine, nice and quiet during the spin cycle but during agitation its grinding away. Is there any other issues that could be causing this problem. By the way, even though its making all the noise its washing normal, its just driving us crazy.

Duct tape mechanic,gr8 video. I've got a similar washer with this issue. On mine I notice that the shaft that the pulley bolts to moves in and out about 1/8 inch. Should the shaft be moving that much? Also I think I this machine uses too much water. Your feedback would be appreciated. I went to see about replacing my washer and I was frightened by the prices, I said "NO WAY JOSE' " so I've decided to try to fix it instead which brought me to your repair videos. Man you're✌ lifesaver. I can imagine all the washers and dryers you've saved from the landfills 💯👍.
@DuctTapeMechanic
@DuctTapeMechanic Год назад
A little bit of play is normal, too much play indicates bearings in transmission are failing (grinding will probably continue despite new clutch). 1/8 of an inch should be ok I would definitely procede with the repair and see what happens. I appreciate the support for the channel.

@DuctTapeMechanic

The only other thing aside from a bad gearcase that would cause this sort of grinding would be if the shifter actuator motor was not working properly. I would replace that next if that doesn't solve it most likely your washer is done
