In the previous episode of this series we ended up making a big hole in the floor. Today it's time to fix it. We've done a bunch of research, sourced a bunch of materials and now we just have to install everything. How hard can it be?

Love the outtakes!!!!!😂 Can't wait to see (hear) ones from the plumbing projects! The building inspector looks just like one in Belgium named Annika. A couple are renovating an 100 y.o. abandoned farmhouse. They, like you are doing some exceptional work on their farmhouse. It's called 'De Hoeve. Old Belgian Farm'. The cat, Annika, is always there keeping an eye on things!

Hello, hope you are both well. No criticism intended, what follows may help in future. If you need to do a similar job again, consider stepping your new timber away from the old (enough to get fixings in), then double/treble your new joist (depending on loading/if your creating an opening). This avoids having to adapt the hanger (not the best idea) and introducing the deflection of the old joist to the new work. This further allows you to bolt more towards the mid line of the timber (the preferable location, in this application) Also, if you can find 'timber connectors' (disks with a hole for a bolt or threaded bar, with teeth in both perpendicular directions) that draw into each timer you are mating together this helps to avoid movement of the individual timbers you are combining. Threaded bar with nuts and spreader plates (large washers) gives flexibility in length of fixing, so avoiding having to recess and reducing the bite of the fixing into the timber. Could not tell if you were using auger bits to get through the thick timber, get a set if you don't have any, they are so much better because they pull themselves through, if you have the space you can use a brace (hand drill), much lighter than holding up an electric drill. In general avoid working with your arms above your own shoulder hight, better to change your body position if feasible. Last thing to offer up is; keep your eyes open for slate (roofing slate), it's often useful as a packer when working with stone buildings: doesn't compress, can be cut to size and even hammered in to raise a joist/fill a gap/can be used as a moisture barrier. All the best.

I'm surprised you didn't save money, by not using joist hangers and 1 x timber, and drill 2 x holes from the back of the timber and using 8" screws fix from behind. Then use 4" screws in the sides diagonal for extra security. It does look like your gonna need a 4" timber where it meets the floor boards or trim them back an inch.😊 have fun😅😅😅

A background footnote: the Portuguese once had a colony called Macao, not far from Hong Kong (and predating it by centuries). They built in the Portuguese style for the most part. BUT to build their fortress they imported Japanese architects and technicians from Kyushu and built it in perfect ‘Nihon Tokugawa’ style. This includes substantial examples of Shou Sugi Ban technique to minimise the possibility of fire damage during combat. Uh, but no, I guess proximity to the fire is the most likely cause…

Well done! Smart to attach the brackets to the new joists and slide them in. Joist hangers, brackets, etc are great. Not sure why in Europe the hangers don’t have the angled screw holes. Here the brackets are used to strengthen roofs for hurricanes and tornadoes in addition to load bearing beams, etc. at least your original beams are solid, many times I’ve opened a floor to find several adjoining joists notched for plumbing pipes installed after the original build. 😀 Eric.
